  • 84 - Michael Thiessen on Canadian Evangelicals and the Paralysis by Pragmatism of the Church

In this episode, I talk with Michael Thiessen about church culture and evangelical leadership in Canada. We discuss his recent departure from the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptists (FEB) and the precipitating events which lead to his exit. There are many questions today surrounding the viability of the evangelical approach to cultural engagement particularly as it relates to politics. We explore the topic of presuppositionalism and biblical sufficiency unpacking the authority of pastors and their responsibility to teach the nations to obey all that Christ has commanded.

Bio - Michael Thiessen, President of Liberty Coalition Canada, lives in Georgetown, Kentucky with his family where he is planting a church called Royal Springs Chapel. He is the former Associate Director of Church Planting for the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptists in Canada. He hosts a podcast called Open Mike with Michael Thiessen. • 83 - Colin Redemer on Thomas Traherne’s “Christian Ethics”

In this episode, Colin Redemer and I discuss the life and work of pastor, poet, and theologian Thomas Traherne (1637-1675). To start, we talk about why Colin feels that Traherne’s work is so necessary today and challenges faced in bringing “Christian Ethics” to publication today. We explore the topics of virtue ethics, love, Aristotelianism.

Bio - Colin Redemer is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Saint Mary’s College of California and the Vice President of the Davenant Institute. He loves teaching on the intersection between History, Philosophy, Literature, and Christianity.

Excerpt: “THE GOAL of this work is not to entertain you, but to elevate your soul, to refine your soul’s understanding, inform its judgment, and polish it for conversation. To purify and enflame the heart, to enrich the mind, and to guide men (that stand in need of help) in the way of virtue. And it will do this not by fasting with a long face but by exciting men’s desire, encouraging them to travel, comforting them in the journey, and so at last to lead them to true happiness, both here and after death.”

  • 80 - Alex Kocman on the Regulative Principle Applied to Missions

In this interview with Alex Kocman, we discuss the rift between theology and the world of missions. Many times there seems to be disconnect between those who are concerned with orthodoxy and those who are concerned with reaching the lost. Alex (and his co-author Chad Vegas) wrote “Missions by the Book” in order to help relieve this tension and provide a better way forward. We dive into some of the ideas in the book, primarily discussing their use of the regulative principle and how it can be applied to missions. We highlight some examples in Muslim contexts of evangelism and church planting.

Bio from website - “Alex Kocman a husband, father, student of theology, writer, former youth pastor, missionary mobilizer, and lay leader in his church.

He received his M.A. in Media and Communication Studies and B.S. in Biblical Studies through Liberty University, where he also served as an online evangelism and apologetics instructor with Liberty University Online from 2012-2014. From there, he spent two years as a Student Ministry Coordinator at LCBC (Lives Changed By Christ) Church. He now serves as Director of Advancement and Communications for ABWE, a theologically conservative, gospel-centered missions agency with more than 1,000 missionaries in nearly 70 countries.

His writing has been featured in various outlets including For the Church, 9Marks, Biblical Missiology, Founders Ministries, Doctrine and Devotion, Message Magazine and ABWE’s blog, Liberty University News, American Bible Society’s Record Magazine, and Christian Life News.

He resides with his wife and three children in York, Pennsylvania, where he spends his free time studying theology, weightlifting, and nursing a heavy coffee addiction. He adheres to the 1689 London Baptist Confession and is a member in good standing Faith Bible Fellowship Church, where he leads the missions committee and serves as director of worship.”

  • 79 - Patrick Downey on the Bible as Serious Comedy

In this interview with Patrick Downey, we discuss his book Serious Comedy in which he makes the case that the Bible is a work of comedy. “Because of the Bible we inherit the expectation that we can live serious lives in writing; but because we no longer believe in the one divine poet who could make this possible, the joke is always on us for we can no longer take our own comedies seriously.” Patrick and I discuss the philosophy of Plato, Aristotle, Schmitt, and Machiavelli. We explore how the tension between comedy and tragedy plays out in our world today in art and politics.

  • 78 - Doug Ponder on the Weaponization of Confession and the Problem of Authenticity

In this interview with Doug Ponder, we discuss the practice of public confession of sin as a means of reaching people which is often practiced by many leaders in evangelicalism today. We explore Scriptures related to this issue such as “judgement begins at the household of God” and “pulling the log out of your own eye.” We also discuss hypocrisy and authenticity. Authenticity is a key word associated with expressive individualism. Should Christians be authentic? What does it mean to walk in obedience to God even when we don’t feel like?

  • 77 - Micah Caswell on Micah the Prophet and Micah 6:8

In this interview with Micah Caswell (returning guest!), we discuss his commentary on the book of Micah. We discuss what led Micah to write this commentary as well as the context of the Micah the Prophet. We dive into Micah 6:8 which is a verse often used by people for a variety of social justice issues. Micah and I share our different perspectives on it’s application for us today and close out talking about helping kids and people know the Bible more.

My Endorsement: “With clarity and conviction, Caswell demonstrates that the book of Micah is essential for faithful gospel preaching. This commentary illuminates the bountiful opportunities available to every pastor and Christian to speak the good news of Jesus Christ. Replete with illustrations and applications, Caswell has provided a resource which is as accessible as it is helpful."

In addition to my role at Redeemer Church, I teach the Biblical Worldview class to the seniors at Denton Calvary Academy. I am a certified biblical counselor through the Association of Biblical Counselors and offer free biblical counseling to the Covenant Members and regular attenders of Redeemer Church. However, I also offer counseling to the community through Covenant Biblical Counseling. Finally, I also serve as the Church Planter Recruiter with the Denton Baptist Association’s SEND Church Planting Network.

I have contributed two chapters in the Noble Company series on John Pitman and Thomas Roberts. Recently I was able to contribute to Baptist Way Press’ study on the miracles of Jesus and their study on the Gospel of Mark. I have also published a  book on Thomas Patient who planted the first Irish Baptist churches. Finally, I recently published a commentary on the Old Testament book of Micah.”
