  • Spain in the World Cup final, Sweden out

Michelle Owen is joined by Jay Harris, Michael Cox and Laia Cervelló Herrero to reflect on the first semi-final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.

The Athletic’s Laia Cervelló Herrero was at Eden Park in Auckland / Tāmaki Makaurau and told us what she thought just after the final whistle was blown.

So Spain are the first side to book their place at the final at Stadium Australia in Sydney / Gadigal on Saturday 20th August.

But their run has been ended by the tournament nous of serial semi-finalists Sweden.

Spain continued their chaotic course through this tournament by knocking out The Netherlands to advance to their first ever Women’s World Cup semi-final.

  • USWNT out after Sweden's dramatic penalty shootout win, Netherlands beat South Africa, Australia and England face R16 ties

Michelle Owen and Chloe Morgan reflect on a dramatic exit for the US Women's Team. Beaten on penalties by Sweden, it's the first time the USWNT have failed to reach the World Cup semi-final stage.

South Africa lost 2-0 to the Netherlands in the day's early kick-off but, as reporter Harriet Drudge tells us, the scoreline didn't quite tell the whole story.

Tomorrow sees Denmark play hosts Australia while England's Lionesses take on Nigeria's Super Falcons. Might Sam Kerr and Keira Walsh make surprise appearances?
