  • Dr. Rosie Book Club – Think Again
We're continuing with our summer format plot twist with a mini book club. In this episode I'm talking about key insights from the latest book from Adam Grant - Think Again. As someone who thrives off challenging limited thinking in myself and others, I was geeking out about this book. Adam examines the critical art of rethinking - learning to question your opinions and open other people's minds. He describes how critical it is that we build our capability to get out of our comfort zones to rethink and unlearn and how it can position us for excellence and work and wisdom in life. I see how important this is every day with my clients, myself and as I observe the world around me. I hope you gain some useful insights from this episode and would love to hear your thoughts as you read the book yourself. About the Book:

Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know

Think Again examines the critical art of rethinking: learning to question your opinions and open other people's minds, which can position you for excellence at work and wisdom in life.

Wharton professor and bestselling author, Adam Grant, shows the shortsightedness of focusing on intelligence (i.e., the ability to think and learn). In a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In our daily lives, too many of us favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt. We listen to opinions that make us feel good, instead of ideas that make us think hard. We see disagreement as a threat to our egos, rather than an opportunity to learn. We surround ourselves with people who agree with our conclusions, when we should be gravitating toward those who challenge our thought process.

The result is that our beliefs get brittle long before our bones. We think too much like preachers defending our sacred beliefs, prosecutors proving the other side wrong, and politicians campaigning for approval–and too little like scientists searching for truth. Intelligence is no cure, and it can even be a curse: being good at thinking can make us worse at rethinking. The brighter we are, the blinder to our own limitations we can become.

This book is thoroughly researched and clearly conveys the importance of rethinking. Then it provides tangible ways that we can think more like a scientist and maximize our impact in all areas of our lives.

Why this book is worth reading :

In the work I do every day in helping individuals and teams show up more courageously and effectively, I see how important unlearning and relearning is. I also personally find myself practicing this daily and rethinking things. As human beings, we are constant works in progress. And our world and knowledge is ever evolving. We must learn to be curious and be more committed to getting things right than being right – which means we have to think more like scientists.

I get that in a world that seems chaotic most of the time, it can feel more comfortable and safe to hang onto familiar views and revert to our automatic, well-learned responses (especially under times of stress). However, I've learned that rarely serves us well and keeps us playing small – preventing us from showing up as a leader in our lives. My copy of this book is highlighted and tabbed all over the place. As much as I think I'm curious and operate from a rethinking cycle, I definitely see where my humanity gets the best of me and I show up more like a preacher, prosecutor or politician. In fact, I'd be willing to bet the same goes for everyone who reads this book. Welcome to being human!

Adam Grant also makes some important distinctions between task and relational conflict, why confident humility is key, how to have effective conversations with people we disagree with and remove polarization and how we can embrace rethinking on both an individual and organizational level.

Points to think on while reading :
    1. What's an assumption that you've been rethinking lately?
    2. Are you most likely to slip into Preacher, Prosecutor or Politician Mode? What steps can you take to think more like a scientist?
    3. How can you foster more task conflict without causing relational conflict? What would open up for you as a result?
    4. Who's someone you normally have a hard time hearing? What would happen if you sat down with them just to listen and try to understand their views better?
    5. If you were going to write a letter to a younger version of yourself with lessons learned and key areas to rethink, what would you write?

  • Dr. Rosie Book Club – Boundary Boss
For the summer, we're shifting gears from our regular format to do a mini book club. In this episode I'm talking about key insights from a fabulous new book that just came out this year - Boundary Boss by Terri Cole. This topic is so relevant and important for many of the clients I serve and coach - and for me personally. Terri teaches from a simple but pivotal premise: without healthy boundaries, you can't live an authentic and fulfilled life. And this is especially true today for women - although I see it in men (and men can benefit from this book as well). I reflect on some key aspects of the book that I see as universal for so many human beings, why it matters and things to think about. I hope you gain some useful insights from this episode and would love to hear your thoughts as you read the book yourself. About the Book:

Boundary Boss: The Essential Guide to Talk True, Be Seen, and (FINALLY) Live Free

Boundary Boss is a comprehensive guide for courageous women (and yes, this works for men too) who want to master creating and maintaining healthy boundaries and are committed to creating healthy relationships and extraordinary lives. It teaches a specific set of skills to help you stop abandoning yourself for the sake of others without all the guilt and drama.

Terri Cole lays out the specific set of skills to help you stop living out disordered boundary behaviors that do not serve you, express yourself authentically, and finally step into your own power. The techniques, tools and strategies in this book will take you on a journey that will align your choices and boundary behaviors with your most authentic self and exercise personal agency.

If you struggle with the disease to please, overgiving, perfectionism, codependency, exhaustion, low-key anger, resentment or bitterness, this book is definitely for you. Boundary Boss walks you through a step-by-step process to FREE you from the deeply embedded, self-sabotaging patterns keeping you stuck so you can finally create real, sustainable change. One right action at a time. You'll become more conscious of your behaviors and true feelings, uncover any corrupted data driving your choices, and become fluent in the language of healthy boundaries.

Why this book is worth reading :

In the work I do every day in helping individuals and teams show up more courageously and effectively, I see issues with boundaries. In fact, I don't think a day goes by where I don't have the boundary strengthening conversation with at least one person. It's a HUMAN experience to struggle with healthy boundaries. Yet, it's so critical to our own livelihood, effectiveness and even trustworthiness. I also saw myself in a lot of this book; I was able to acknowledge and celebrate how far I've come (recognizing in years past I was a boundary disaster) and see where I still have work I can do.

I love that Terri Cole doesn't sugar-coat things and invites you into the messy middle with the difficult task of looking inward and recognizing our limiting beliefs and maladaptive behaviors we carry into adulthood from our inner child's need for self-protection and belonging. And she doesn't leave you hanging there; she provides concrete steps, sample conversation starters and more to dealing with all kinds of situations and people. She also authentically shares her own struggles and journey along with several of her clients to humanize the Boundary Boss journey. I've already recommended it to several of my coaching clients to supplement the work we've already had underway.

Points to think on while reading :
    1. How skilled are you at your own body wisdom? What do you need to start paying more attention to hear what your body is telling you?
    2. Are there specific types of people or relationships in your life where you find yourself more challenged with boundaries than others?
    3. What is in your Boundary Blueprint and where do you notice your 5 year-old self hijacking you?
    4. What would open up for you if you committed to becoming a Boundary Boss (if you were living the Boundary Boss Bill of Rights)?
    About the Author:

Terri Cole is a licensed psychotherapist and global relationship and empowerment expert. For over two decades, Terri has worked with a diverse group of clients that includes everyone from stay-at-home moms to celebrities and Fortune 500 CEOs. She has a gift for making complex psychological concepts accessible and actionable so that clients and students achieve sustainable change. • Ask Me Anything Volume 1
Lately I've had several of my coaching clients say they need a "Rosie in their pocket" and have some sort of bobblehead or something with reminders to help them. After the laughter subsided, I thought maybe there's another way. So I decided to put out an invitation to "Ask Me Anything" to the Show Up as a Leader Community, and there was a lot thrown at me. So this episode is for you...I covered how to make a difference when you don't have the title or authority, how (and why) you can still show up courageously when others are armored, dealing with difficult people, and having conversations around important topics when you're operating from a totally different paradigm than the other person. And, yes, by request, I take myself through the questions I ask every guest so you can know a little more about me. I hope you find some helpful insights and enjoy! • Wading in the Messy Middle and Finding Our Authentic Self with Carley Kammerer
This is probably one of the most transparent, authentic, human conversations I've had yet on this podcast. Carley Kammerer, CEO of Wildflyer Coffee, openly shares her journey as a force trying to end youth homelessness and in reconnecting to who she is as a person and a leader. Her journey is so commonly human, and I know you'll find yourself resonating with so much of it - from recognizing the limitations of showing up trying to be hyper-productive and all things to all people to giving ourselves permission to feel, be human and find and embrace our authentic selves. I hope you walk away from this conversation inspired, enlightened and embracing more of your own unique gifts. Guest Info Carley Kammerer, LSW, CEO - Wildflyer Coffee

Carley is a licensed social worker who has built an eight-year-long career working with youth experiencing homelessness in various capacities. She currently works as the CEO of Wildflyer Coffee, a nonprofit coffee company she co-founded that employs youth experiencing homelessness and teaches them critical job and life skills to help them build a brighter future.

Carley also sits on the Young Professionals Board for Youthlink and mentors through Big Brothers Big Sisters. She is incredibly passionate about finding new, sustainable solutions to ending youth homelessness, encouraging leadership, and advocating for mental health and wellness in young female leaders.

    Show Notes

Wildflyer Coffee - this is the company Carley founded where you can learn more about what they do and the youth they support; and you can support them through their online store and donations.

Spring Forward MN Donation Campaign - in order to further Wildflyer's efforts, they need to raise an additional $10,000 in May to be able to expand their efforts. COVID-19 dramatically altered an already challenging reality for youth experiencing homelessness. As unemployment rises and entry-level jobs decrease, youth are facing higher barriers than ever before. In addition to paid work, Wildflyer's youth need housing assistance, mental health referrals, skills coaching, education help, and future career planning. It's crucial to support youth holistically so they graduate from their program fully equipped with the skills and confidence to succeed. Even small donations can help. Please consider giving today.

This is probably one of the most transparent, authentic, human conversations I’ve had yet on this podcast. Carley Kammerer, CEO of Wildflyer Coffee, openly shares her journey as a force trying to end youth homelessness and in reconnecting to who she is as a person and a leader. Her journey is so commonly human, and I know you’ll find yourself resonating with so much of it - from recognizing the limitations of showing up trying to be hyper-productive and all things to all people to giving ourselves permission to feel, be human and find and embrace our authentic selves. I hope you walk away from this conversation inspired, enlightened and embracing more of your own unique gifts.

Wildflyer Coffee - this is the company Carley founded where you can learn more about what they do and the youth they support; and you can support them through their online store and donations.
Spring Forward MN Donation Campaign - in order to further Wildflyer’s efforts, they need to raise an additional $10,000 in May to be able to expand their efforts. COVID-19 dramatically altered an already challenging reality for youth experiencing homelessness. As unemployment rises and entry-level jobs decrease, youth are facing higher barriers than ever before. In addition to paid work, Wildflyer’s youth need housing assistance, mental health referrals, skills coaching, education help, and future career planning. It's crucial to support youth holistically so they graduate from their program fully equipped with the skills and confidence to succeed. Even small donations can help. Please consider giving today.
