Gary Winckler is one of the top sprint and hurdles coaches in the world and also one of the most thoughtful and intelligent coaches out there. In 2008 Winckler retired after 23 years as a coach at the University of Illinois. During that time he coached over 300 All-Americans and more than a dozen Olympians. On this episode of the GAINcast Winckler explains the performance influences that led to his success as a coach, and how he worked to implement some of Frans Bosch's running and training concepts. We choose a little different format for this week's episode of the GAINcast. Rather than have Vern tackle a question, we invited on a guest: Dr. Wade Gilbert. Gilbert is a professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Fresno State University, a GAIN faculty member, and serves as editor-in-chief of the International Sport Coaching Journal. On this week's episode he tackles questions about the coaching profession, coaching values and culture, the art of coaching, and more. A recent trend in programming is the implementation of "injury prevention" sessions into training. But as Vern wrote about last week, injury prevention training doesn't always prevent injuries. In fact, it might be causing injuries in some cases. On this episode of the GAINcast, Vern looks at whether such training helps or hurts athletes. For more information about this topic, read the complete show notes at: http://www.hmmrmedia.com/2016/03/gaincast-episode-6-injury-prevention/

Two essential elements of training are context and progression. Context establishes the nature of the relationship of the various components of training within the system. And progression, in its simplest form moves the workload frrom simple to complex, easy to hard and general to specific. On this episode of the GAINcast Vern talks about how context and progression can be properly implemented in training: http://www.hmmrmedia.com/2016/03/gaincast-episode-5-context-and-progression/

Periodization is just a fancy word for planning and creating a good plan should be central to any coach's approach. On this week's episode Vern discussed current trends in periodization, as well as common issues coaches have with the process of planning.
