On episode 18 of The Gamekeeper Podcast, we welcome back Dr. Bronson Strickland with the Mississippi State Deer Lab, and discuss the whitetail rut. As always, we learn something new from Bronson as he shares his extensive knowledge and breaks down the stages of this highly anticipated annual event. We also share stories of recent father guided hunts, including: little Dudley’s first deer, Bobby’s daughter’s first bow kill, and how Lannie taught his youngest a tip on keeping his hands warm while in the deer stand. A phone call to Nathan Douglas explores a mysterious tip on a big buck he was rumored to have recently harvested, leaves us shaking our heads. Dudley answers a question from a concerned listener about why his “magazine cover” food plot isn’t being eaten, but the one that wasn’t limed is being hammered.

On episode 16 of the GameKeeper Podcast, we welcome Dr. Mike Chamberlain of UGA, a wildlife researcher, professor, and fanatical hunter to the show. Is it possible that red wolves (or even their genes in coyotes), still live in the southern US? Dr. Chamberlain helps answer this question by explaining the history of the red wolf and what efforts were taken to try to bring them back. He also explains that our habitat management practices could be helping predators more than we realize. Dudley answers the question, should you practice crop rotation with your brassica food plots?

On episode 14 of the GameKeeper Podcast, the crew discusses whitetails with world class Gamekeeper Glenn Garner, the manager of Foxworthy Farms, and we also get a surprise visit from our favorite Gamekeeper and legendary comedian, Jeff Foxworthy. Glenn and Jeff tell their secrets on creating ideal whitetail habitat and their strategies on harvesting giant bucks, including Jeff’s secret to staying calm. Although creating cover, planting food plots, and knowing what days to hunt are all key, they contribute the bulk of their success to having the common goal of leaving the land a better place than when they found it. We also invite Bill Gibson, Mossy Oak Kennels Master Trainer (AKA the dog whisperer) to the studio. Bill tells us the story of how the kennel started and demonstrates his patented growl that all the dogs respond to. Dudley answers the question: Is it the white oaks or red oaks that don’t drop their acorns every year, or do they both drop every year?

On this special (13th) episode of the GameKeeper podcast, the crew discusses the upcoming rare Blue Moon and the effects the moon has on wildlife. Although some studies suggest deer movement is not affected by the moon, we discuss our experiences with moon phases. Also in the spirt of Halloween, we tell a few hair-raising deer camp ghost stories that are certain to make everyone a little uncomfortable next time they are at their hunting camp by themselves.

On this episode of the GameKeepers of Mossy Oak Podcast, we take a look on the other side of the fence to try and help poacher proof our properties. We put our feelings aside and welcome the self-proclaimed “prince of poachers” Charles Beaty to the show. Follow along as this convicted poacher from Texas helps us understand the mindset and hopefully how to prevent and protect your property against violators. We are also reminded that everyone’s life has a different path, life’s decisions can bring major consequences and that we have all made mistakes. Plus, Bobby digs up some interesting facts on bobwhite quail that you might not know and Dudley answers the questions: Is it too late to plant in the South and what should I plant in a last minute food plot? My sawtooth oaks are not making acorns, why and what can I do to help them start producing.

On this episode of the GameKeeper Podcast, we pick apart two unverified southern long tail cat sightings in Alabama and dive into the age old disagreement: Do long tail cats really live in the southeast US and are the sightings legit? First we test two stories between Lannie and CJ Davis, who were together when their mystery cat appeared. We get both stories separately to see if anything sounds fishy. Later we interrogate Mossy Oak’s Rob Moore and his story of an Alabama long tail cat he encountered after killing a deer. Rob reluctantly breaks his silence and it’s a great story.
Ask Dudley: What’s the best way to plant and care for fruit trees and what really happened to the Chestnut trees?

On this episode of GameKeeper Podcast, we talk with David Lindsey of The Lindsey Way. David tells the amazing story of Mr. Mumbles, the 9 ½ year old Georgia buck that was only seen three times in person and left a long history of sheds on the ground. Mr. Mumbles finally shows himself during an early bow season hunt and the rest is history. David also shares a few tips on what makes their GA farm so successful and how the trees they plant, play a key role in their hunting success.
Also Dudley answers the Ask Dudley questions, and the Gamekeeper crew discuss how persimmons seem to be the downfall of many early season southern bucks.
