You don’t have to have a Stanley cup. You don’t have to look at the scale in the doctor’s office. You don’t have to pack your kids lunches, cut the sandwiches into shapes and leave a note every day. There are SO MANY things we’ve adopted as things we have to buy, do or be because someone else said or modeled that for us. The freeing truth is, we don’t answer to anyone but our Father in heaven. When we look to Him, we find the true *musts* of lie; what is truly non-negotiable. The rest of it may be good but sis, you don’t have to.

I (Rebecca) put down my phone for a week and am thrilled to share what I learned and experienced. As I am typing these show notes, my phone just notified me that my screen time was down 86% last week. Was it easy? No. Was it worth it? Yes!
Our phones constantly distract us as we subconsciously convince ourselves that we need them more than anything else. We literally can’t leave home without them. We also spend our precious time checking social media and appeasing our boredom with apps and games. Those we love most often get the least of our presence as we divert our attention to something that has become an idol.
My spiritual mentor challenged me to take the time I normally spend on my phone and instead spend it in prayer. Our minds and hearts are navigating hurt and disappointment on a daily basis and too often we settle for putting it off in search of an easy fix of social media scrolling. There was so much inside me that needed personal attention from Jesus and I am so thankful for the reminder that his love is so much better.
I’m praying you take the plunge too! Start your own journey in taking a break from your phone and follow these steps:

The fabulous Jenny Worsham joins us in this episode as we talk all about the podcast live and our favorite table at the event; the “Come alone? Sit with me” table. That’s what we’re all about here at Gather Moms; making space for each other. Momming can be LONELY. If you feel alone, you’re not alone. We have to do the work to reach out to make friends and an easy way to connect to moms is with our Gather Moms Groups.
Jenny tells us all about groups and how you can get connected. She also mentioned the great resources that you can use in your groups. All of those links are listed below.

We’re all operating out of places of brokenness. Brokenness, in God’s eyes, is being so crushed by the sin and darkness of the world that we recognize there is no place to turn but to God. I think it’s important for us to recognize this because it affects the way we listen and receive messages from others. If we’re all broken by sin, then I can either turn in desperation to God or turn in search of worldly fixes.
Jeremiah 2:13 compares this search to broken cisterns that hold no water. A cistern was vital for life in the desert. There were long periods of no rain so a cistern held water to keep you alive during a drought. These spiritual cisterns were leaking because the people had forsaken God. The core evil in all our sins is believing some broken cistern will give us greater life and joy than God. It is only when I turn to God for healing from brokenness, that I can begin operating out of a place of wholeness.
Rebecca shares about Kintsugi (golden joinery) which is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer mixed with gold. It treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. Instead of disguising my brokenness, I can allow God to heal me and make something beautiful from it.

Did you know that you talk to yourself more than anyone else? What are you saying to you? So many of us are talking to ourselves like we would never talk to someone that we love. We’re being punks to ourselves, bullies even, and it has to stop. We have to pay attention to what we’re saying to ourselves and speak true things instead of lies.

Psalm 13:1-6
2 Corinthians 10:3-6
Philippians 4:8-9

NEW SEASON! Welcome to a new season of the Gather Moms Podcast that we’re calling ‘Listen Sis’. We’re not just mom friends, we are sisters in Christ. Our desire for all the people in our house to listen to our voice also means we need to be aware of what messages are filling our ears. We are all listening to something; some messages are good but most distract us from what really matters. God has great plans for us this year. He wants us to seek him with our whole hearts. Lean in, MAMAS, because we are challenging all of us to listen close to Gods’ truth.
Jeremiah 29:11-14 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” 12 In those days when you pray, I will LISTEN. 13 If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. 14 I will be found by you,” says the Lord.
