So Many Crafts, Not Enough Time

There are 300 crafts in this book that I want to make. Many times you get a craft book and can use about half of it. This one has great ideas and the instructions are easy to understand, even when listening to it. The craft supplies aren't extraordinarily expensive either. It was like the author tried to keep it inexpensive, but you still can create beautiful crafts. The book starts out with how to organize a craft area and gives great ideas on setting up large or small spaces. There is something for everyone in this book. There are fabric crafts, ideas on scrapbooking, how to paint just about anything, how to make fragrant crafts like potpourri and candles, wood crafts, how to sculpt or model with clay, resin and more, making crafts with washi, masking and other tapes, how to make things with buttons, jewelry making, using yarn including knitting and crocheting, crafts for kids and things to make for any holiday you might celebrate. The author did a great job in making instructions easy and the reader makes sure you understand everything. All in all, a great book for crafters of all ages.

Useful but....

The walkthroughs and data are useful, but I think the author needs a better editor. The sentences and even quotes of commands were just down right wrong. It is not "Freeze Pan" It's "Freeze Pane." So this book is useful, but as a time saver, not so much. I spent more time re-reading the run-on sentences than understanding the material.

The right message at the right time

Sometimes you reach the right message at the right time. This was it for me. A quick read, with clear steps to help me structure my writing process for maximum impact.

Plenty of good advice, a little too much self-patting on the back.

This is a quick book to read and it contains a fair amount of good advice on how to become a better and more efficient writer, produce more in terms of both quality and quantity.

The one thing that irks me is that throughout the book the co-authors repeatedly have to pat each other on the back for the interesting and clever ideas they suggest/present. Why is that necessary? That could have been part of the foreword or author's notes in the beginning of the book. Yes, the idea may well be good, that's what I expect from the book because why else would I have bought it? That aside, it is a good solid book and I hope the future volumes in this series are equally interesting if less self-congratulatory.

Inspirational and Instructional

I was already a fan of Honoree Corder's work (I've read Prosperity for Writers and her co-authored book, The Miracle Morning for Writers), so I jumped at Write Like a Boss. This book is at turns inspirational and instructional. It made a solid argument for how one must take charge of her writing career and how that agency starts in the mind. Habits, rituals, daily word counts, vision statements, setting aside time for planning marketing and production--these were all addressed, in addition to chapters covering some basics in writing fiction and nonfiction.

Much more insightful than what the title suggests

What did you love best about Pretty Powerful?

I enjoyed her in depth analysis from some of the top stories and headlines over the past decade or more. The book felt relevant and current. The book does well to motivate and inspire deeper thought about a woman's choice to use appearance as a source of power in the ascent of Power. I did not agree with everything but I did think that the argument was well thought out.

I have never read a book written from this perspective.

Listening to her voice allowed me to understand specific emphasis on what she felt was important. The book is actually well written than many other narratives.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I was moved when Ebony discussed her personal experiences with sexual harassment in college and in the workplace.

Any additional comments?

The book has broad appeal that I believe anyone could understand and enjoy. I wish she would have discussed the impact that the European standard of beauty plays in the corporate environment.

Interesting and useful.

Changed the way I thought about magic and business. Very useful

How to work magic in business and real life

David Kwong thinks that thinking like a magician can help us get ahead at work. He may be on to something.

A Harvard graduate in the history of magic in 2002 (while there he taught then-Harvard president Larry Summers how to produce a bouquet of flowers from his sleeve), David Kwong decided to make his way in the world as a magician. (Despite the doubts of his parents, both more staid academics.) Now with this book he moves out of performing magic to tell us the secret of how illusion can help us succeed in business and our lives.

That makes some sense. In business and in politics, illusion does often bring more success than realism. Think of Steve Jobs and his "reality distortion field". Think of Robert Kennedy's version of George Bernard Shaw's line: "Some men see things as they are and say, why; I dream things that never were and say, why not."

That kind of thinking can be taken too far, I think, but David Kwong does not do that. He ties together magic tricks and illusions with the psychological principles underlying them, and then suggests how the same principles can be used in other fields to get results.

In some cases, David Kwong trots out the same old ideas as others before him. Storytelling, for example, is powerful. I get that. But even with that, he brings a new slant to it, pointing out that the best magicians tend to tell stories in their acts. You still need good tricks to impress. Storytelling adds to good tricks, it does not make up for mediocre ones.

In other cases, David Kwong brings out some new ideas I had not thought of. Like the vital need for preparation and timing. One example: when a person goes out of a room for a moment, leaving their phone behind, David Kwong might pop off the back of the phone and put a folded-up card inside. When the person comes back, the worst thing to do is to do a trick then. Best wait a while, until the person forgets they even left the room. Even better, until someone suggests a card trick.
