The Aikido series is one of my favorite fictional series.

Great Story...

This author just keeps getting better at his craft, or hobby...maybe. He certainly seems to enjoy writing these books, and I hope he keeps on doing so. I certainly enjoy reading them. His point of view is in my opinion refreshingly honest. I wish more folks could be as honest, instead of trying to refine every utterance through the sieve of "political correctness". But then again, I'm an old fart, and when and where I grew up, calling it as you saw it was considered a virtue. It was an ethnically diverse area of the north east, and in my town there were people of Polish, French Canadian, Jewish, Anglo-Saxon, you name it descent. We called each other ethnic slurs constantly, and everybody got along just fine. It was like giving someone a nickname that wasn't all that complimentary, but was actually a sign of affection and respect. Like Parker, we just didn't hug each other. Difficult to explain these days. I was tall and skinny, and got called "Bean Pole" more times than I can remember, but it was never said as an insult, it was just how we took notice of each other. You wouldn't say it if you felt it would be taken hurtfully, so it was usually received as a compliment, 'cause it was known you were tough enough to take it. You didn't have an inflated opinion of your own importance. I like honesty, and live and let live, and the golden rule. I think the world would be a better place if people weren't so willing to be offended, had thicker skins, and gave each other the same benefit of the doubt that they'd expect.

That's why I like Parker, he can be cantankerous, and has little patience with those who take themselves too seriously. But, he's honest, compassionate, and a good friend to his friends. He lives life on his own terms, and makes no apologies for it. It's not his job to make you happy, that's your responsibility. I will keep on reading these stories as long as he keeps telling them, and I am grateful to him for doing so.

Why were they murdered and wrapped up like gifts on their birthdays

What did the dead women have in common? Why were they murdered and wrapped up like gifts on their birthdays? Each of them had given up a child for adoption but is that the key? Hah- no spoilers here. This is a fast paced procedural for fans of the serial killer sub genre. Cooper is a smart guy but he really does have some issues, especially dealing with his personal history and with Alexandra, the mother of his daughter. I liked that he worked cooperatively as part of a team (so rare in this type of tale). Grant also has spent time researching Birmingham (am curious how natives feel about this). This is the third book in the series and while the action didn't seem dependent on the back story, some of the personal relationships (notably with Alexandra) were a tad hazy for me. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

Not A Fan

This book didn't hold my interest at all. I can't say that I liked much of anything about the story.

For starters, there is very little character development. Most of the characters are one-dimensional, placed in the story to fit a need and nothing more. Devereaux comes off as arrogant and not particularly likable.

The story is largely plot-driven, which leads me to my next problem: The subplots take away from the main story rather than enhance it. The major plot about the serial killer is formulaic but has promise in the content. Then we have a subplot featuring Devereaux's girlfriend, whose sole part in this story is to research genetics so she can decide whether she wants to stay with the man she loves. Her crisis felt overblown and her narrative parts a needless distraction. Then we have the blackmail of Devereaux, which isn't as much blackmail as it is an attempt to get him to pay a whole lot of money for information. Devereaux's reaction to both his girlfriend and the blackmail is more of a non-reaction. His character has no spark.

The pace is quick and there are a few good action scenes. But it wasn't enough to breathe life into the story for me.

This is the third book in the Detective Cooper Devereaux series, which I didn't know when I requested it to read. That was nowhere in the description at the time. I haven't read the first two books, and, in my opinion, this one does not work well as a stand-alone. The two subplots are carried over (I assume) from the previous books. Initially it's all vague and not much from the past books is filled in here.

Great book

I enjoyed the story but didn't care for the narration. The voice did not match my image of the character and emotions. However, the story is very well written and enjoyable.

Faceless

What a good book! It has the mystery and a little bit of the suspense you expect when reading about murders. You may think you have The Whos done it figure out, but you have no idea until the end. A very nice surprise with that. I love trying to figure it out but hate when I did all too soon. This one kept you engaged until the end just as all mysteries should be. A great recommendation for anyone who enjoys mysteries.

Keeps You Guessing Until The Very End!

Faceless is a great mystery in that it keeps you guessing until the end. The Author does a great job dropping bread crumbs of hints along the way but you seriously will be guessing until the very end. Within the mystery we meet a cast of characters that are extremely relatable and you quickly become invested in them. The narrator was fabulous and bringing the story and characters to life. I look forward to more from this Author and narrator. This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Rosemary' s Gravy

This was a fantastic start to a new series. Rosemary, Sage, and Thyme were three sisters whose parents bailed out on their failing business after deeding it over to their daughters. Wanting to keep it in the family, the three girls are working to pay off the debt, even though it's a slow process. For Rosemary that means giving up her job as a scientist to become the highly paid cook of a movie star in Hollywood. When the woman is murdered after ingesting nuts, something she's seriously allergic to, suspicion falls on Rosemary. However, there's also her husband, who's keeping a secret he doesn't want exposed, the man's son and victim's stepson, who had very little love for his stepmother, and the housekeeper, whom the murdered star treated like dirt beneath her feet. Plenty of twists and turns as two detectives try to catch a killer. And one of those detectives is showing quite a bit of interest in Rosemary. A really enjoyable read that does a fairly good job of keeping things stirred up while keeping you guessing as to who done it! There were several times I found myself chuckling at Rosemary, who had a sarcastic sense of humor. I can tell I'm going to like her sisters as well. I would certainly recommend this to anyone who is a fan of a good, clean mystery or a fan of Ms. Miller. I happen to be both.

I would classify this book as a romance novel, not a suspense story.

I thought this was a suspense, crime mystery. In that context, the preoccupation with sexual innuendo is pretty ridiculous.

Someone charged with murder would most definitely not be obsessing over the men with whom she came into contact.

Very predictable plot full of cliches

A New and Different Adventure for Jake

This new Jake Travis adventure goes deeper into the demons bedeviling Jake as he struggles with the need to punish the person who killed his sister some thirty years in the past. The narrative goes deep onto the emotions that drive the psyche, and sinks into deep expressions of philosophy as Jake locates and interrogates a long list of friends, relatives and potential witnesses throughout the south. His support team at home is augmented by an older man he tracks down from a photograph seen is a crooked lawyers office. As in the other books of this series, a continuing dialogue explores the relationship between Jake and Kathleen as it continues to evolve. All the friends from the earlier books play a role, including his persnickety cat. The story is exciting and full of suspense, yet laced with bouts of humor. You'll gasp and chuckle as the events unfold. I received an ARC from Netgalley and the publisher of this book to review.

Naked We Come

Robert Lane has a great first sentence in Naked We Came: "I was 37 when the man suspected of abducting and killing my sister nearly 30 years before washed up on the beach a mile from my house." This tells the reader what to expect in a succinct sentence. Jake Travis is an interesting protagonist. He lives on the shore in Florida, does a punishing workout each morning to make up for drinking too much the day before and is basically a smart a to everyone he talks to. His dialogue reminds me of a verbose Spencer, a main character in many Robert B Parker books. He does not have a 9 to 5 job but takes on tasks that require a man of certain skills that might involve killing. There were times I liked him and times he treated people with such utter disregard I wasn't sure he had a heart. He carries a sadness and a need for revenge for the 14 year old sister that disappeared while they were on vacation. This is a complex mystery with three college age suspects.

An Enjoyable Short Story & Great Start To A Series

No God Is Safe is a short story about a private investigator, Simon Strong and a renegade, British mage, Tristan Montague, who find themselves teamed up on a case involving missing children and a couple of shady Hindu Gods. The story and narration are both excellent. They both serve to create a great origin for a new series. I look forward to the next story. I just hope it will be a lot longer.

The beginning of a beautiful relationship

I freely admit to being addicted to Montague and Strong. I've read the book and truly enjoyed Heaton it come to life. It has all the characteristics of a good M&S story, snark, good dialog, magic, and the destruction of buildings. The story itself is a prequel that explains how the two met. And explains (sort of) many other thin he peculiar to Simon.

An excellent introduction to a very enjoyable urban fantasy series.

How they met

I have read this story on my Kindle, and decide to listen to it. I found I enjoyed it very much, the narrator and the person that does Monty's voice are great, they really bring the story to life. It is how Monty and Simon met, along with how Simon's mouth and also his big heart got him cursed with everliving life. Along with the reason you should not mess with Karma.

I only hope there will be more Monty and Simon audible books and that they keep the same people doing it.

I love this series, BUT...

This is one of my favorite series all around. The narration brings all the characters to life, and I especially love the "old biddies."

However, Jemma was exceptionally annoying in this book. She was a jealous clingy girlfriend, acting insecure the whole book long. She over analyzes every single move her boyfriend makes. In one scene she decides to call Devlin and see if he's free. When she can't get ahold of him she decides to pack up her cat, an overnight bag & show up unannounced at his house. She acts like a slightly crazy jealous girl, going back & forth in her mind if Devlin is cheating on her. It's exhausting.. I could have used way less of that.

Otherwise I love this series & the rest of it is incredibly enjoyable to listen to!

Another Good Series

Every book is better than the previous one. The characters and story are fresh and entertaining with the right amount of humor. I hope all of the books are made available on Audible.

A terrific book set in Oxford!

Gemma Rose, owner and proprietor of the Oxford Tea Room, lets her best friend, Cassie, talk her into joining Cassie for Oxford's May Day celebrations in Muffins and Mourning Tea by HY Hanna. This celebration involves meeting at 5 am at the Great Tower to hear the Magdalen College Choir sing to welcome in the spring. With all the jostling by the crowd, Gemma gets separated from Cassie and ends up on the bridge that spans the Thames. Then, with the conclusion to the song, someone splashes into the river, causing everyone to smile over the student hijinks. But when the young man fails to surface, smiles turn to expressions of concern and soon panic as his dead body is brought up from the river. He must have broken his neck in the shallow river.

At least, this is what everyone thinks must be the case until the medical examiner looks over the body. Charlie Foxton has been stabbed with a kitchen skewer. Even more upsetting to Gemma is the fact that the skewer belongs to her chief baker's best friend, Miriam Hopkins, who served as Charlie's scout in Oxford. For the uninitiated (which means most of the world), an Oxford scout takes care of the students living in the dorms, even cleaning up their rooms and vacuuming each week.

Not unless they were already a Peter Robinson fan

How did the narrator detract from the book?

OMG he was so awful. He has a nice voice, but he's a reader, nothing more. And his voice range when it comes to attempting to perform a female is laughable. Every women came off sounding like some geriatric elf, breathy, squeaky, ridiculous. Really detracted from taking any of them seriously. And this is a problem for a book that has so many female characters: Annie, Geri, Jenny, Gervaise, Linda Fuller . . . they all sounded so silly. WHY? Why do audio producers hire readers who 1) can't even give a decent range of believable voices to the main characters and 2) simply read the book aloud rather than perform it. What happened to Simon Prebble, who was doing this series for years? I hope this is a temporary change, because Prebble is a master.

I was disappointed by this outing from Robinson. It wasn't any kind of a puzzle, there weren't multiple suspects. Also, it was so unbelievable that all the cops would buy the suicide at the beginning - it's so frustrating to read along when actions are that implausible.

Outstanding!

If you love British police procedurals, Peter Robinson is a must read. Attention to detail, great misdirection, and characters we recognize as old friends.

Bring back Simon Prebble

Good story but the narrator was not up to the standard of Mr Prebble. Too many weird unconvincing accents

Big fan of Banks and Peter Robinson!

Peter Robinson has done what some authors seem unable to achieve- he has continued to write his Alan Banks series with the same high quality for each book instead of letting his characters become boring. This latest Alan Banks novel is as fresh and interesting as his earlier books, and the characters have continued to grow and develop into old friends. Im also pleased that Robinson hasnt created unnecessary drama and trauma in the characters personal lives to try and keep things interesting. While the characters have all gone through their challenges its not excessive and doesnt detract from the story.

EVEN AMISH HAVE SECRETS

I have always enjoyed Samantha's books. This was the first to read one of her mystery stories, and was delighted. Readers will not be disappointed , the plot was good, and held your interest to the end. True to Amish way's she thought the best in a person, even though police thought other wise.

Secrets are held by even the Amish, and this will keep you wondering what they were. Well done, and will look for more Amish mysteries by Samantha. Given ARC audio for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.

Really Good

This is an entertaining series. It has the perfect balance of professional and personal relationships. The characters and plot are realistic and engaging.

Good but I Like Meffords Ivy Nash Series Much Better...

I listened to Meffords Ivy Nash series first and I loved all the books. The Alex Troutt series is good but not my favorite. I just dont really like His Alex character. I find the humor too flippant. I tend to like dark and witty humor. As other reviewers, have said some of the scenarios, like falling and face planting into someones ass, is not witty and something I would expect from a series geared at teens.

With that said, Mefford can created vivid characters and entertaining plots. This series has more foul language then the Ivy Nash series. Bentley does a good job narrating.
