The Patience of the Spider is the eighth audiobook in Andrea Camilleri's wryly humorous Inspector Montalbano series.
'A brother', he said.
Jesus Christ! Now where'd this brother come from? Whose brother? Montalbano had known from the start that between all the brothers, uncles, in-laws, nephews and nieces, this case was going to drive him crazy.
Chief Inspector Montalbano is on enforced sick leave. But when a local girl goes mysteriously missing, the whole community takes an interest in the case. Why are the kidnappers so sure that the girl's impoverished father and dying mother will be able to find a fortune? The ever-inquisitive Montalbano steps in, to get to the heart of the matter in his own inimitable style.
The Patience of the Spider is followed by the ninth audiobook in the series, Paper Moon.
Members Reviews:
in praise of montalbano
this is #8 (2004 italy; 2007 english translation) in the series by andrea camilleri featuring inspector montalbano, the bombastic, dyspeptic kind-at-heart chief of station in vigata, a sicilian seaside hamlet whose roads, hills, streets, history and outside-the-law proclivities are known well to faithful readers. crimes in the series are seldom frightening in the retelling, but usually fatal nonetheless. they may start with a body, clothed or not, both genders represented, or with another malfeasance that winds up with a body on display; the inspector wrestling himself, his dreams, his doubts, his long-term romance, taking a swim or boiling up an espresso to enjoy on the veranda, contemplating the activities of nature around him. he may spy a fish, a bird, or here a spider, hard at work, or he may follow signs that lead him to the inevitable body. what follows is a kind of jalopy ride through montalbano's train of thought, insights, suspicions, visions and magical thinking that keep the plot moving straight as rails to its conclusion, despite frequent interference from superiors and crime-solving collaborators, aided in his efforts by a band of faithful associates.
do yourself a favor and start with #1 in the series, "the shape of water" (1994 italy; 2002 english translation). camilleri references previous stories frequently and it's a reader's grace note to follow character development and place-setting along with the writer. you'll eventually arrive here and beyond (there are currently 16 in english).
if you're just in the mood for delight, this is another of your 16 choices.
My least favorite Camilleri book
The characters in this book are predictably delightful, and I liked the plot up until the very end. Maybe I missed a page or two to fill me in on the plot, or maybe I am just too dense to follow it. I went back after I had finished the book to see if I missed something, and I was still disappointed with the ending.
Inspector Montalbano Solves Again!
The Wonderful Inspector Montalbano is here again, a little worn and recuperating from a gunshot wound. He is feeling his age.
But a kidnapping and ransom bring out of seclusion to use his unique methods, thoughts and insights to aid the police investigating the kidnapping. If you love Andrea Camilleri's books you will love this one too.
Bookworm has found a new home.
I started reading this author's work a few years ago and am delighted with his content.
