Excellent follow-on novel

The Master Sergeant, Sage, continues on his quest to uncover the dreaded Phrenorians real purpose for establishing a base on Markaum in addition to leading several missions to uncover and destroy illicit drug facilities taking hold on the planet which are harming the planet's indigenous people and blighting their communities. Interestingly, he finds himself making some temporary alliances with the blood-thirsty Phrenorian captain, Zhoh GhiCemid, in order to accomplish some tasks, all the while knowing that this person is not to be trusted and has plans of his own that are not in the planet's inhabitants best interest.

The story is well written and well narrated.

Fun Romp

This is a fun action story. All kinds of Sci-fi gadgets. Likeable characters. Even some of the villains are likeable. I bought the sequel.

Very Good Military SciFi

The writing and tempo was mostly excellent and the narrated performance was superb, as I've come to expect from Todd McLaren. However, there was some areas where the tempo slowed while the author provided backstory to the planet's human civilian inhabitants and their matriarchal tribal society.

Overall, I found the novel interesting and entertaining and look forward to listening to the next book in the series.

What slow start?

I try to be logical about how I spend my credits on book purchases and part of it is reading the reviews. An Amazon review read that " Master Seargeant started out slow but quickly picked up." When I finished the book, my first thought was "where was it slow?!" Mel Odom has delivered a blood 'nguts epic that isn't complete augumation or battle by button! Its an old fashioned, in the trenches, use your head and Strategize to win war! I loved every minute of it and narrator Todd McLaren was so superb in his rendition, I never noticed the passing of time. He is certainly one of the best,

Interesting, diverse characters in nonstop action playing out a well thought out plot. What more can be asked? Buy the book! I'm buying the second in the series right now!

A good story teller that makes you invest you mind.

This is the third book in the series. I have no idea how many books are planed but I have begun to feel the interaction. The first book does little more than set the stage, it doesn't do a lot but it gets you started. In the second you begin to learn more of the people (humans) and other sentients that are in the books and how the humans are truly seen. The third book has a character development sense about it. I was a military scifi snob for a long time. I only read John Ringo or David Weber and Robert Heinlein (Starship Troopers a true military scifi classic MUST READ!) to name a few. As I ran out of authors to read I turned to Amazon and explored, not knowing the wealth of mil scifi that is here and Tim C. Taylor is very enjoyable author to read. I have liked all three Human Legion books and I will continue to read them as he writes them I will buy them too. Buy the books, enjoy the reading and open your mind. Very good books in my opinion.

Sacrifice, Destiny, Courage.

Just finished this 3rd installment today.

A story of death of friends, human catastrophe, lost battles, and future hope. A story of manipulation and destiny continues.

Spoiler - We get a glimpse of where the source of Aruns Armies will come from. But that will be a story behind another book in the series.

Much more background in this 3rd book. The fun days of youth are behind us. The hard facts of sacrifice and war are upon us.

Like other comments on reviews, I would recommend reading the first two books first. The author did take the time to supply a few pages of the story so far from the first two books.

Look forward to the 4th installment. Giving this book a solid 4 star review.

I have been enjoying this series from the beginning, ...

I have been enjoying this series from the beginning, and book 3 continues the trend. The author is working with a vast landscape, so he has a lot of room to work with this story line that I would envision will continue for an additional number of volumes. This volume wraps up a few loose ends from the previous stories, setting up a villain that will likely appear in future volumes, and exposing both the strengths and weaknesses of the hero. I certainly will keep investing in the future editions, and I hope the author can keep advancing the story.

Not bad..

Books 1-3 are pretty good. It is after this book that the Author seemed to have lost interest in writing the series.

Great series, BUT...

I like the story, but the novels could use a bit of trimming. The overall arc of the series take awhile to get to the meat of the story for each indivdual book. Sometimes world building is great, but not at the espense of the story.... Maybe I'm being too critical or just have no patience, but in each book I've experienced moments when I wished the author would just get on with it.

Best of an enjoyable series.

I've followed Cyrus's journey through the zombie apocalypse since the first book "The Undead Situation" came out in 2013. My guess is that if you're reading this, you have too. The series is practically required reading in a genre that has become bloated (Sorry about the pun.) with lots of sub-par stories.

Ms. Knapp did a fantastic job bringing the story back full circle. Not only is this accomplished through the main story line, which is to be expected, but also through subtle nods to the previous two books. Its that subtlety that I found particularly impressive. Just enough to catch your attention, but not so much that it encumbers the flow of the story. I won't spoil anything here, but you'll know them when you hear them.

As you'd expect, the usual cast of characters are back along with some new ones that shake things up some. Ms. Knapp has continued to refine and add depth to Cyrus's character since her first book, and "Ruins" is no exception. He's still the original z-poc sociopath; love him or hate him, he couldn't care less as long as he gets what he wants. Along those same lines, Ms. Knapp has also continued to raise the bar for her brutally descriptive treatment of a post apocalyptic existence. Its one of my favorite things about this book. To say she doesn't pull any punches is a gross understatement.

What can I say about Mr. Collins? He's the voice of Cyrus that we've all come to expect, in all his snarky bluntness. Few narrators capture a character so well. I doubt I could listen to anything else he's done without thinking "Cyrus V. Sinclair". The only reason he didn't get a full five stars is that while he has Cyrus "dialed in", other characters are not quite as polished.

took forever

waited and waited and waited for the audio book to come and the best part was the last 2hrs.. I was expecting more.... to them 7yrs to wrap it up when all they had to do was go back to the begin....grrrr

Wow! Iron Mike Was an Awesome Story!

Iron Mike was an awesome story. It's full of intense drama, action, humor, and even some romance.

The character development was great, and the story was told from multiple POV's. There was even mental dialogue from a dog named Hershey who was lovable, loyal, protective, and one of my favorite characters. He's thoughts had me laughing. There's a lot to be said about man's best friend! Mike and Kari were my other two favorite characters. Mike for his determination, and how he became a hero, and Kari who was not only tough, but a fighter as well.

The story is mainly centered around Mike, who is 17; however, the contents of the story is for adults.

Aliens have come to harvest the earth, and their initial attack has wiped out the majority of humanity. These aliens believe humans are not sentient beings; therefore, have been targeted for extermination.

After the aliens initial attack, Mike sets out to get his sister to safety, and soon picks up women named Kari, and a group of children. During their trip to Fort Knox, they are attacked by aliens, and Mike endures the first of many challenges. Along the way, Mike receives aid from an unlikely source.

This story had several twist and turns, and the ending was not what I expected, but I don't want to spoiler any of these events for anyone. If you are a fan of dystopian Sci-Fi, you will enjoy this story. I know I did!

The narration was great, and I was able to easily distinguish each character.

Excellent story, so-so narration

For what seems to be a first book, this is terrific. The pacing is good. The story is split into segments, each dealing with a different character, or set of characters, but there is sufficient detail in each for it not to feel as though the story jumps around.

Very Good, But Could Use Some Changes/Updates

I was very excited about the story line of this book. As soon as I read the description, I had high hopes. For the most part, I got my wish. It was a good story with believable characters, but it wasn't without its flaws.

The story begins with a researcher discovering a city on the moon by using a super computer to resolve moon images. The ruins, made almost completely of glass, have remained hidden from earth's view. He shares this information with his wife and several trusted friends who are determined to tell the world of the discovery by bringing back the first real alien artifacts. The first half of the book is focused around gathering the people, the new technology, and the money to enable them to travel to the moon and explore the ruins of the thousand mile long city. All the while, a secret government agent is following them to discover how much they know and, if necessary, silence them.

When they do finally get to the moon, what they discover could change everything that humanity has believed for thousands of years about their origins and place in the universe. If that isn't enough, it soon becomes apparent that they are not the first people from earth to make it to the city...

As I said, just the concept of the book was fascinating. I really enjoyed the whole thing, and must have listened to it in almost one day. Having said that, I think there were a few things that could have been better...

First, I found the whole concept of an "invisible city" to be a little hard to believe. The author describes the city as covering the majority of the face of the moon. Even if the city were made of glass, I don't think it would have gone as unnoticed as the author suggests... Second, the technology seemed to be a little out of date to me. I didn't expect them to be building Star Trek type ships and flying to the moon, but the equipment and technology the characters were using left something to be desired. Even the tech that they find on the moon seemed a little dull. Third, I found the whole sub-plot with the secret government agent to be unfulfilled. He essentially disappears once the main characters leave earth, and you never really find out who he was, what he was covering up, or anything about him.

The whole book could also have been a bit longer...

All in all, I thought this was a good listen.

A strange but satisfying journey

An enjoyable and easy to listen to journey, odd at first, but worth the tale. The narrator was very good. A bitter sweet tale that is hard to review without spoilers, but left me with a feeling some of the grand masters of science fiction have done in the past for me.

The equivalent of an enjoyable scifi popcorn flick

Would you try another book from James R Wells and/or Mitchell Lucas?

I'd definitely read another book by either the author or narrator. The author had believable characters and a moved the story along at a nice clip. The narrator did well. He kept it varied without venturing into voices that get irritating.

If youve listened to books by James R Wells before, how does this one compare?

I have not listened to one of his books before.

What about Mitchell Lucass performance did you like?

The narrator's tone matched the tone of the book well. He could convey a decent set of characters without resorting to screechy voices or etc.

Could you see The Great Symmetry being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

It could go either way. You could trim a few things and have something better than 'Jupiter Ascending', but maybe not as good as '5th element' or leave everything and do it as a 6 part BBC series. Ending lends itself to TV show more, I suppose.

Any additional comments?

I'd just be interested to hear more about lead to the middle section in the tunnels. It turned survivalist for a few chapters when the rest of the book was so scifi. And can we please get a different unit of distance than 'Parsec', so unoriginal, not meta as others would have you believe.

Stilted Dialoge, So-so Story

I have mixed feelings about this book. The only character that I found relatable is the main protagonist. Between the stilted dialogue,horrible personalites, and heavy handed SJW messages it's not a fun read.

I really enjoyed this classic sci-fi story. It's got everything to love - great characters, strong female characters, humor, adventure, archeological artifacts, and enough world-building to let you know about this universe without being boring.

Story great, narrator is horrible and needs to be replaced

The narrator ruined the book. She couldn't even read a smooth sentence. She stumbled over ordinary words and mispronounced many words, ruining the story flow. If the story hadn't been so good, I would have given up on this one. Let's hope they do not use her again on future books. Someone like Davina Porter would have been perfect.

Great story but what a terrible ending!

I was riveted to the story the entire time only to be extremely disappointed at the ending. I can only hope the next book has a better ending!

Great Book

I am hooked. Can't wait for the next one! I am a fan. So informative too.

Too much. All over the place

The prepper tips should be in a prologue. Too much rape and molestation. Monologue about being prepared seemed out of place and too long. Glad to read a prepper novel by a woman.

Interesting story, but new editor(s) and narrator needed.

The book was educational and thought provoking. The author has and refreshing point of view that we should help each other after a horrible event -compared to the male writers in the same genre. However, between the narrator, the redundancy of words and descriptions, and the quantity of characters, I had to force myself to keep listening. For the author... If you explain something once with one character don't do it again with another. Consider being less wordy, not using the same word two or three times in a sentence. I am not sure I would spend more money to continue listening to the series.
