Lots of action

Book one ended with Captain James Drake and crew on the way to attack Admiral Malthornes sugar plantation to look for evidence that will prove Drake innocence and find the antidote for the Hroom sugar addiction.

What they learn causes Drake and crew to join forces with the daughter of a former rival pirate captain. They go off on a mission into deep Hroom territory to try to stop a war. Wallace provides lots of action and space battles in this book, along with building suspense over Ajax.

What added some interest and humor to the story is the interaction between the regular navy personnel and the pirates that have been added to the crew of the Blackbeard. The book is easy to read, packed with action that moves at a very fast pace. Steve Barnes narrated the story. I am looking forward to more in this series.

I feel truly fortunate to have found this series. What a wonderfully talented author.I cannot wait to read the next one in the series

It took buying book one and two to get one story. Book one only told you who was in the story and where. I will be asking for refund on book two as it took two to be worth paying for. I will likely not buy book three.

As a fan of Rusch's books, I'm a little frustrated

I really look forward to Ms. Rusch's books in both her currently ongoing science fiction worlds but I'm growing a little tired of how she's rolling out the "Anniversary Day Saga". She's releasing a series of moderate to short length partial novels that don't really stand on their own, and don't complete a full arc as part of the larger story. This is a very well crafted part of a novel, but as a story on it's own is not satisfying at all. It's everything that "middle books in a series" get criticized for. There are only two more installments in this saga and I'll buy and read them, but I really think it should have been three or four much more complete books rather than eight incomplete ones.

Getting Better

At the beginning of this episode, the author promised a better story and she delivers. While I'm still not happy paying for fragments of one long book, this section of the tale is better and really moves the story forward. There is action, good detective work, and a feeling that there may yet be an end. The narrator does a good job with Rusch's quirky style and many characters. I'm looking forward to the next episodes in this series.

I would give this audio book (10 stars )if I could

This is the type of science fiction that first led me to love reading. I've already roped 2 grandsons by picking their interest followed by books for Christmas. I hope they will fall in love with reading like I did.

I chose this simply told fast moving book to plant the daydreams of artificial intelligence, spaceships, lasers, In a futuristic, military space war complete with a well thought out first communication with a powerful nonhuman intelligence. Complete with the powerful emotions faced by soldiers on a battlefield and there personal emotional struggles with the death of comrades, love, temptation, racial stereotypes, bigotry. leaving the reader questioning their beliefs in the kind of person they want to become. A grandfather can only try and I will forever be grateful to the high school librarian who expanded my world with the love of reading

Tedious re-hash

It became tiresome to go over and over 'Morgan's hold' and sing the song again and again. Felt like filler. The love interest was tedious as well. Fun stuff with the genies and the action parts of the story though.

Lukyanenko, having Ukrainian ancestry himself, threatens authors who support the Euromaidan that he will make every effort to prevent their books being published in Russia. He also forbade the translation of his books into Ukrainian.

He welcomed the accession of the Crimea to the Russian Federation.

No more Lukyanenko ever

Disapointed

Great start but really disappointed in the book as a whole. I love The Watch series and having read the very different premise for this book I was really looking forward to Lukyanenko bringing something new to the science fiction genre. The narration is good and I was pulled into the story from the start but was left wondering why I bothered. There's a lot of ick factors and there's no real pay off to the listener for going through them. The whole thing felt slightly heavy handed and misogynistic (which was a real surprise after the Watch had such strong female characters in it ). Great concept but the three rating is purely because the first half had so much potential. If this had been written by another writer I don't think I'd have bothered staying with it. It's always difficult to make sweeping generalizations but I really think this story will appeal most to heterosexual men, as the female and gay character/s are just stereotypical window dressing. Far too many trite concepts and cliches and without giving to much away, it fizzles out just where the characters could have become really interesting.

Stupid sounds added for no reason

I have no idea what idiot decided to add random being bang boom sounds throughout the entire book but it a sensually ruins the performance quality of what would be a great book and story.

Bad narrator

I have liked every story so far, the narrarator is horrible he makes everyone sound wimpy and whiny

My 11 year old would have narrated better. This was a truly painful listen of a lackluster story.

A Thought-Provoking Premise

My initial awareness of The Silent History was in its unique premise: starting around present day, children are born without the cognitive functions to understand and use language. Then I learned of its unorthodox and groundbreaking publication - as it was originally released as a serialized electronic novel written and designed for the iPad and iPhone.

Really appreciated it in this format.

I read this in its original form, which was much easier to digest, but it was written to be an oral history anyway, so it really lent itself to this format.

GREAT START TO A GREAT FANTASY SERIES

Sword of the Archon (Shader #1) by D.P. Prior is one of the best self-published fantasy that Iâve stumbled upon. Not to say that it is perfect, because nothing is ever without flaws. It is, however, a dynamic work of genre bending scifi, fantasy and horror that immediately brings to mind Stephen Kingâs seminal work: The Gunslinger, with its post-apocalyptic world, mysterious ruins of an advanced civilization, its mystical elements, and a main character in Shader who is just as gruff, haunted, and jaded as Roland Deschain.

The story is set in post-apocalyptic Australia, where a terrible cataclysm ended the technological society of the ancients and ushered in a new millennium built upon medieval tools, religion, mythology and magic. But the world never stops changing, and old evils never seem to truly die. So when someone begins uncovering and using the pieces of an ancient relic of power, the wise immediately suspect the return of the Technocrat.

But who is this person?

Sketis Gandaw (a.k.a. The Technocrat) was the foremost scientist that ancient mankind ever produced; a brilliant man who conquered the world through the power of his technological wonders, the money of his worldwide corporations, and the desires of the population to believe in no power greater than their own human logic. Many of them resent a woman in a position of power and see Byerley as an obstacle to their paths to power.

Somewhat Disjointed

I liked the concept when I started the book, but it devolved into a series of predictable scenarios, coupled with incidents that were both contrived and absurd, especially involving the chief villain. There were the usual grammatical errors (principal and principle are not the same word), but my main objections were that most of the book was too pat and there were too many uses of the 'deus ex machina' solution to many dead end scenes: just announce the result.

Likeable story

I liked it. Was a well written story, not an original plot idea but Kenneth did it well.

It shows that the author can write and overall was a good reading experience. Not a book I see myself reading again but was worth the time reading.

A very poor story

This is one of only 2 or 3 books that I've read that I would say are is outright poor. I generally dislike speaking harshly, but in this case I must.

First, while typos can be distracting if they're too prevalent, I typically don't have an issue with them. In this story there are some here and there along an occasional missing word. The main problem with this book is that the characters are none existent. In other words the characters display no actual personality. This is noticeable right from the beginning of the book where the main character rescues the princess. "I heard a female scream. I ran towards where I heard the scream come from. There were three men surrounding a women. I ran towards them and killed the three men, it was easy because I'm the best."

Admittedly, this is not an exact quote, but the actual writing is only slightly better then this paraphrase.
