Awesome

Loved story line and easy to listen to. once started had to finish the book.

Action-Packed from start to finish

A seemingly routine session to cure his niece's aquaphobia turns up an operation that was so dark no one but the operatives knew about it. This sets into motion the people who called for it and the people who were involved in it to either hide what happened or blow the whole thing open with unknown consequences.

The narration of The Dead Have Secrets was done by Stefan Rudnicki, who does a stand-up job. His deep manly voice helps set the John Powers character. And his ability to change his voice helps set the others that were featured in this book. I enjoyed the narration of this book quite a bit and will be looking for other books narrated by Rudnicki. I particularly liked his rendition of the asthmatic character who always seemed to be out of breath.

When I first looked at this book I wasn't sure if it was a zombie book (based on the audiobook cover I just saw a hand reaching out), but it is not at all. It's a great story about a deadly operative who's old mission is coming back to haunt the people who originally called for it. I thought that the premise of the story along with all of the characters was really interesting and different.

There were parts of Dead Have Secrets that reminded me of the Bourne books and movies because of the way that Powers is able to take control of a situation. Also the "he's incredibly dangerous" and he keeps eluding our best teams really reminded me of the was Jason Bourne was. There is nothing wrong with that.

Twice as good as the movie

Movie novelizations aren't really on my literary radar at all, unless they're James Bond movie tie-ins written by Raymond Benson. THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH book is much richer, nuanced and layered than the film.

In the sense that Sean Connery IS James Bond then Raymond Benson IS Ian Fleming. He doesn't write like Fleming (could any writer duplicate Fleming's mid-20th Century snobby prose poetry?) but Benson's deft blending of Bond's literary progenitor and Bond of the movies is spot on, but more important, exciting and fun. Benson writes books I look forward to reading, even movie tie-ins originally plotted and scripted by others! In particular Benson makes the improbably stupid and foolhardy boat chase scene early in the movie into something a lot lower key and almost believable.

My chomping at the bit to read a movie novelization is the highest compliment I can pay Raymond Benson.

An audiobook review

I never quite got around to seeing this Bond flick. I am a casual fan, meaning that I eventually get around to seeing them, but not usually in the theater. I ran across this audiobook version and figured I'd kill two birds with one stone - liven up my long commute with some entertainment and cross this Bond story off of my list.

This version is read by John Kenneth. Kenneth was confronted with a tough choice - how does he read Bond? Does his version of Bond sound like Connery? Dalton? Moore? Who? Kenneth's voice for Bond is unique and unforced, which cannot be said of some of the other voics he uses. At times, Kenneth presents the listener with a variety of increasingly-shrill British voices that sound more like the soundtrack of a Monty Python skit rather than a more serious presentation.

Being free of the movie format does offer the author, Raymond Benson, a bit of freedom and he uses it in two interesting ways:

#1 - the amount of sexual detail. Benson goes into graphic detail with Bond's sexual adventures. This is not in keeping with the movies which generally feature a wink and a nod and a female voice purring, "Oh, James!" as the camera fades to black. This is a trademark of the series, just as much as "Bond. James Bond" and "Shaken - not stirred" are and I think it should have been given more respect.

#2 - Benson explores the twisted background of a Bond arch-enemy rather than limiting his background to the bare oral briefing that Bond receives when he is assigned his mission. We learn all about the childhood of Renard, a terrorist bent on anarchistic chaos.

Norwegian Resistance mystery

Initially I felt the book was a little hard to get into, however with a little patience in letting the author introduce the reader/listener to the various settings and characters I found this to be one of the best mystery WWII resistance stories I have ever read. Very powerful!

Impressive parallel plotting

The parallel storytelling (WWII and 2003) is very skillfully done and while attentive readers may sort out the multiple "whodunits" before the end, there are surprises all along the way. Look forward to another well-translated, literary-tinged mystery by Sveen.

Not the book it claims

This is NOT the story of a woman caught up in the intrigue and violence of WWII Norway! Instead it is the VERY depressing story of a bumbling, incompetent, wife beating detective in modern day Norway trying to solve a murder. Very scattered dialogue, poor plot development, barely average narration. I can not recommend this book at all. I also feel deceived by the synopsis shuck "tricked" me into buying it in the first place

Me gusto mucho Como todos los libros de este escritor, mucha accion y situaciones inverosimiles pero relatados en forma amena y comprensible, a veces se extiende mucho en algunas descripciones que para mi gusto resultan tediosas, pero entiendo que precisamente eso tal vez atraiga a otros lectores, menos impacientes por llegar al desenlace.

I enjoyed this story with is vampires and Eater of Souls. There was a lot of explanation in the story line, but it was useful I guess. Sad ending.

Deadly Echos

This wasn't as good as the first 3 books. First the reader was not as good as the others. Most of the characters sound alike. This book as extreme graphic violence. I think it was unnecessary. There was so much action in the first 3 books that kept your attention, this book had several descriptive graphic violent scenes, it made me ill. The story was alright but with the bad reader and violence, I wish I would have skipped this book. I think I could have caught up on the storyline with the main characters in the next book. Very disappointed!

best book on ages. really good and enjoyed it. more like this please please please please please

Worst book I've had to listen to

Well what a buildup at the beginning. Somebody was really trying to sell this, I was quite excited about getting stuck in to it.

I spent the next god knows how many hours wondering why it was even written, the plot is so weak and poorly put together that at the end your scratching your head and wondering what that was all about.
