Publisher's Summary:
Dragons are more fun than algebra. And epic battle scenes are easier to manipulate than the arguments in Jonas's kitchen.
In real life, Jonas's sister Emma babbles nonsense from her wheelchair. But in Jonas's world, she is the moonstone bearer and the only person capable of restoring the Stormdragons to power. He weaves a tale of jarring action, fascinating creatures, heart-pounding battles, and loveable characters that may be just what he needs to save his sister and his family.
Members Reviews:
Skillful, imaginative and tender.
This book is a stellar example of the power of imagination, and how ti can open up a world of positivity and possibilities, even in the most challenging situations. Heather's characterization of Jonas is mind-blowing. It aspired me to be a better person. This is a great book for both adults and teenagers, who are in transition phases in life. The illustrations are enjoyable, and the juxtaposition of reality and imagination is skillful. I loved following the Kyla's adventures. I might just want to read this book again. It certainly brings forth tenderness, emotion, excitement of creativity and prompts one to reflect on relationships/friendships. Great work, Heather!
Well written
This story chronicles two siblings who are going through tough times with their parents being separated. Along with the normal stresses of being a teenager and worrying about the well being of his sister this story shows a means to escape reality for a while. It shows the view of a sibling dealing with another sibling's disabilities. The feeling that they were chosen to protect them.
The characters are well developed and have depth, as if they are real. Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
His best friend is another boy named Matt
This is book one of a series of books about a little boy whose imagination takes him to a far off place. In the present, he is the typical little boy with a 13-month-old baby sister who seems to do nothing from her wheelchair but babble. His best friend is another boy named Matt, and he and Matt like to imagine they are in a castle discovering moonstones that have the magical power to call down creatures called Stormdragons. While physically they are just playing at the playground, in his imagination they are on an epic adventure, where he faces sword-yielding wildsmen and more, on his way to rescuing his (much older in his mind) sister after she is taken away by a villain named Demir and his men, the shamen.
This is a long but good adventure story that I think best fits the tastes of kids around 10 years old and up. I like that it is somewhat similar to the cartoon series "Winnie-the-Pooh" in that it's like how Christopher Robins imagines he's in the Hundred Acre Wood with his friends who in real life are stuffed animals.
I am so looking forward to the next book!
When I saw the cover of this book, I got excited. I think the cover alone was carefully and beautifully done. And, when I read it, the content didn't fail either. The first book of the Jonas Flash Chronicles - Stormdragon was an exciting and fun book to read. There are also illustrations thrown in every once in a while. Clearly, the author's imagination stretches far and wide. Her ability to translate her imagination into words so that us, readers, will be able to experience her imagination is epic.
