Wow, another HUGE book in the series!
Terry Scott is absolutely knocking this series out of the ballpark! This book serves as an extremely important part of the series for reasons that 8 can't explain without ruining the experience. My only complaint is that Audible does not seem to have book 8 available... Not pleased about learning this as this book wrapped up. I am officially addicted to this entire series and can't recommend it enough to everyone!
Another Game World With Past World Oligarchs Ties
After the passing of Loredana Cyber's father and she too young to run his theme park empire, she finds herself shut out from it when coming of age. This by a powerful board that used legal machinations unaware to her to do so.
So, what's a scion with the genetics of past business geniuses to do? Why, what else, create her own virtual reality theme park that eventually surpasses even her father's real world empire; thus unwittingly, creating a new Game Is Life virtual world.
If all this sounds familiar, it should. While people, conflicts and circumstances are different, they are all too similar, as well.
It seems like Terry Schott has a plan with creating all of these virtual worlds that will ultimately culminate into some epic climatic conclusion. And while his writing style is still very much above par and Luke Daniels' performance equally so, I'm finding myself wishing that the next book will finally find it's way to it.
adds so much depth to the series! great book.
Cant wait for the next book! This book was amazing. So much depth added to the multiverse.

    Publisher's Summary:
A sequel to the H. G. Wells classic The War of the Worlds, brilliantly realized by award-winning SF author and Wells expert Stephen Baxter.
It has been 14 years since the Martians invaded England. The world has moved on, always watching the skies but content that we know how to defeat the Martian menace. Machinery looted from the abandoned capsules and war machines has led to technological leaps forward. The Martians are vulnerable to earth germs. The army is prepared.
So when the signs of launches on Mars are seen, there seems little reason to worry. Unless you listen to one man, Walter Jenkins, the narrator of Wells' book. He is sure that the Martians have learned, adapted, understood their defeat.
    He is right.
Thrust into the chaos of a new invasion, a journalist - sister-in-law to Walter Jenkins - must survive, escape, and report on the war.
The massacre of mankind has begun.

    Bore Of The Worlds
War Of The Worlds by HG Wells is in my top 3 books of all time. So I quickly picked this up when I heard about it. I have to say I was disappointed with it. The plot is there and the storyline is interesting. However, changing location and characters mixed with a lot of dragging story hurts the story overall and hurt my enjoyment of it.
Gone is the narrator from the first one although he is a character and an important one. The change from the original narrator to his sister-in-law seems like an unnecessary change. She is tapped with a lot that seems like the original narrator would take on. I find it odd that World War I still carries out just the same after the Martian Invasion. The futility of man changing is barely spoken on in this plot point and that's sad considering the first book was a critique on man for World War I.
The book is double the original which wouldn't have been terrible but the plot moves so slowly. There's a lot of waiting around and looking at things and talking to people. The story doesn't just follow the main character, as the first book did, but jumps to other POVs in an effort to provide different viewpoints. It's a way of getting out of the original first person perspective that's established. When the perspective does shift it stays on the people way too long. I found myself skipping through parts and making sure I was getting what happens at the end before changing back over to the main character. Not much was lost especially since most revelations occurred at the end of sections before the switch.
There are some positives to be had including other alien life being brought to Earth. It showed a very interesting development to the story for what should be done with these types of sequel stories. However, Baxter tends to poo-poo the ending of the original book but comes up with an ending that is just as "deus ex machina" and that Baxter even agrees with. Honestly, it felt lazy and very abrupt.
That's a lot of plot points to. There are revelations that are brought up, and while I didn't agree with everyone being the route I would have taken, a lot were just stated and moved on. Moved on to more filler items.
A big hindrance I had in my enjoyment that the scope and scale are hard to keep track of. The constant changes in perspective and location of characters make it a little difficult to follow.

Roland Tankowicz wasn't even legally a person anymore.
The aging cyborg had never really recovered from being betrayed and enslaved by his superiors in the Army, and the final insult of being permanently classified as "defunct military ordnance" had been a bitter pill to swallow. Now, he spent most of his time drinking beer and working as a fixer for the crime families in 25th-century Boston. It was easy money if you were the kind of guy who was bullet-proof and could pick up a house.
But then Lucia Ribiero stumbles into his favorite watering hole dragging a squad of bounty hunters behind her. Shadows from his own dark past, and old debts still unpaid conspired to drive the old war-horse out for one more mission. Like any good soldier, the mission is all that matters for Roland. Linked by a shared connection to her kidnapped father, the duo will face veritable armies of criminals, mutants, cyborgs, and corporate executives as they search for the missing man. The secrets of the Ribiero family take center stage as they approach the center of the labyrinth, and Lucia's mental and physical issues present an even deeper mystery than her father's disappearance.
Roland will have to face the horror of his past one more time, and Lucia will need to get a grip on her future if they expect to survive a running battle with an entire galaxy's worth of mad science gone awry; and ultimately prevent a terrible history from repeating itself.

The last war was fought with weapons unimaginable....
A war was fought. Humanity lost.
    Time for a rematch.
The world fell, the invaders won, and demons now ruled what had once been man's domain. The great works of a once powerful civilization lie in ruins, its people having forgotten the wonders of their forefathers as they now live in the yoke. Not everyone is willing to go quietly into the endless night, however, and for every inch of ground they'd won, they had paid in blood and bone. At the end of it all, however, the demons stood victorious and all that was left to accomplish was the final cleanup of the human pests that infested occasional parts of the conquered world.
In one nearly uninhabitable part of that world, a very young such pest has come of age and, without understanding what it means, she walks in the shadow of destiny.
The demons have a lesson to learn, one last to be taught to them by humans, before they can call this world truly their own.
A cleansing fire can start from the smallest of sparks...and it is always darkest just before the dawn.

Mix of SciFi and Fantasy in a great new world
Evan is one of my favorite builders of worlds and here, he steps into new grounds. The setting is a wasted Earth that you are unsure if it takes place in a far off future or a very distant past. Demons have wiped out most of humanity and what is left is a shadow of what used to be.
The demons are inter dimensional intruders and I take it, so are angels, the world is covered with relics of heights that man rose and the tools left behind. The main character is a girl named Ella, who grew up in hiding in the middle of this wasteland and bad things happen as things do and she grows up.
Go ahead and buy it, you won't be disappointed.
    Surprisingly enthralling
I have never read anything by Evan Currie before. I was between books and looking for something new. Knighthood caught my eye and I figured I'd give it a shot. I'm very glad I did. Definitely worth the credit. Great world building, but not at the expense of character development.

I have been following this author since finding fan fiction. He has successfully made the jump from fan fic to a published author and reading stories that have a touch from his previous writings is an incredible feeling. Favorite characters are now fleshed out and become part of a greater universe. Hunger for more. Thank you

Space Opera with a great AI component
    Josh here
I am an avid fan of Space Opera audiobooks and am very intrigued by the progress being made in the artificial intelligence realm. This book ties together two of my favorite topics and is a fantastic continuation of the first story.
Tony brings out a common theme that is present in just about every culture, and that is the relationship between a military force and an indigenous population. Early on, we see the relationship between the marines and the Mechanics develop. A lack of trust exists up front and this shifts throughout the story. As a soldier, I have seen this very relationship occur and I think Tony did a great job of depicting it. We often fear what we dont know/understand, and this is captured brilliantly here.
My favorite component of the story is Alpha, an AI that is coming to terms with her human side. As she no longer accepts the term AI, we watch her struggle with things most of us take for granted as a sentient species. What are the different emotions encountered when it comes to dealing with living beings, be it taking a life or performing a healing action? Alpha faces struggles that I imagine any combat arms has to deal with at some point. We see Tag attempt to encourage the healing aspect of her duties in order to promote a more peaceful/helpful artificial being.
There are many twists that I did not see coming in this story, to include the story of Lone star and Bull. The story definitely kept me engaged throughout.
Another easy 5/5 rating and I am anxious to move on to Shattered Dawn and the continuation of the adventures for the SRE Argo, the crew, and the mechanics as we look into the nanite threat.
I am glad this series was recommended to me.
Too much is the first thing that comes to mind
When a story gets written in a way that one just longs to get through it , you know that something was done wrong. The story starts of somewhat believable but the sheer number of 'bad luck' the main characters have to deal with, and non stop battles leaves you wanting a break at some stage . Thiis title is packed with action - and not the good type - it gets to be annoying at around half way throughg the book. I think I will give the rest of the series a skip .
    Even better than the first!
This series just keeps getting better. I thought the first was a great ride, the second was even more epic.

    Interesting short story
A nice short Expanse extension. Didn't really know what to expect but glad I listened to it. A tiny look in to life on one of the Laconia worlds before the next main novel, Persepolis Rising.
The narrator was brilliant as always and kept me engaged in the novel. 4 stars.
    What Happened On Lacona
Ever wondered what happened on Lacona? Well now you can find out in Strange Dogs.
I found Strange Dogs to be a great listen though a smidge short to be called a novella, a longish short story maybe (I know it looks weird to me too). The story of one little girl and her experiences with death are well written and, as always, well read. I can't really give any details of the story except to say it occurs durIng Nemesis Games or Babylon's Ashes on the colony planet of Lacona
    Wondrous and chilling and great!
Absolutely loved it. It carries wonder and cruelty of a fairy tale. Surprisingly tense and packed with content for such a short story.
    OK
it was alright, could have been bit longer and flesh out more. i know they don't want to give too much away with the new book coming out but it did feel like it was missing something Compared to the other novellas
    Not the best Expanse work.
Far too many echoes of Stephen King's Pet Sematary. May be a precursor of something more to come.

    Publisher's Summary:
Seth is a surveyor, along with his friend Theo, a leech-like creature running through his skull who tells Seth what lies to his left and right.
In the universe containing Seth's world, light cannot travel in all directions: there is a "dark cone" to the north and south. Seth can only face to the east (or the west, if he tips his head backwards). If he starts to turn to the north or south, his body stretches out across the landscape, and to rotate as far as north-northeast is impossible.
Every living thing in Seth's world is in a state of perpetual migration as they follow the sun's shifting orbit and the narrow habitable zone it creates. Cities are being constantly disassembled at one edge and rebuilt at the other, with surveyors mapping safe routes ahead.
But when Seth and Theo join an expedition to the edge of the habitable zone, they discover a terrifying threat: a fissure in the surface of the world, so deep and wide that no one can perceive its limits. As the habitable zone continues to move, the migration will soon be blocked by this unbridgeable void, and the expedition has only one option to save its city from annihilation: descend into the unknown.

    World-building at its finest
First off, the usual disclaimer: I believe Greg Egan to be the absolute apex in the "science" chain of hard science fiction - his ideas are always one (or a dozen) steps ahead of anything I've read by any other author, and his world-building is stunning.
"Dichronauts" is no exception: choosing to set a novel in a universe with very different rules from our own is a long and respected tradition but the care and depth of analysis you'll find here is not as common. Of course, since it's not a treatise but a novel, Egan had to take some (several) shortcuts - the protagonists are explicitly tasked to explore and explain their world, which leads to more pages of exposition than I'd probably like, and there are occasions when their inner monologue (or conversation) have a slightly off-putting "As you know, Bob" tone. On the other hand, without information like this the reader would have to spend half the time consulting Egan's webpage to understand what's going on, so I feel the tradeoff is more than justified. As a side note: I strongly recommend doing that anyway, because the images and animations in the site's section dedicated to "Dichronauts" are rather useful for those of us who cannot easily visualize the consequences of having two time-like dimensions.
From a "literary" standpoint, the style is pretty much what readers of Egan are used to - clear, succinct prose with very few unneeded sentences - so I would say that appreciating his previous work is a rather solid indicator of whether you'll like this one. The converse is also true, unfortunately: if you don't like his pragmatic approach to character development, or his tendency to veer off into scientific discourse when you least expect it, you probably won't like this.
One final note: in more than one page it's easy to read between the lines and find socio-political commentary on the issues and subjects that Egan has explored in the past: (im)migration, reaction to and acceptance of different cultures, self and personality and so on.
