    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
A thriller of war that never was - of survival in an impossible city - of surreal cataclysm. In The Last Days of New Paris, China Miéville entwines true historical events and people with his daring, uniquely imaginative brand of fiction, reconfiguring history and art into something new.
    "Beauty will be convulsive...."
It's 1941. In the chaos of wartime Marseille, American engineer - and occult disciple - Jack Parsons stumbles onto a clandestine anti-Nazi group, including surrealist theorist André Breton. In the strange games of the dissident diplomats, exiled revolutionaries, and avant-garde artists, Parsons finds and channels hope. But what he unwittingly unleashes is the power of dreams and nightmares, changing the war and the world forever.
It's 1950. A lone surrealist fighter, Thibaut, walks a new, hallucinogenic Paris, where Nazis and the Resistance are trapped in unending conflict, and the streets are stalked by living images and texts - and by the forces of hell. To escape the city, he must join forces with Sam, an American photographer intent on recording the ruins, and make common cause with a powerful, enigmatic figure of chance and rebellion: the exquisite corpse.
But Sam is being hunted. And new secrets will emerge that will test all their loyalties - to each other, to Paris old and new, and to reality itself.

    Can living artwork die?
Can it live before it dies?
-- China Miéville, The Last Days of New Paris
As a reader who is drawn to art as much as to books, Miéville novella came as a messy, strange treat. The concept is relatively simple. Imagine a New Paris transformed in 1941, by "virtue" of an occultish weapon to fight the Nazis, into a ghetto where Nazi's and French Resistance continue their battles into the 50s along side Surreal artist and Surreal art that has been made living. Oh, and the forces of Hell are also involved in this battle for Paris.
"...a figure with the head of a singing bird, its body a clock with the pendulum swinging, its legs a mass of fish tails dearly done in pen and ink. A sketched out bear face on a coffin, walking on clown feet. A mustached man, rendered as if by a child, his body a buxom leopard's, rooted like a plant. Exquisite corpses, tasting new wine."
It wouldn't be a Miéville novel if he didn't twist and shove even this funky idea into grotesque and quirky corners. It wasn't a great Miéville, but it was still fascinating. Here is a man, built by God or Demon, to create new, weird worlds. Miéville is someone who can read Anne Vernay and Richard Walter's La Main à plume : Anthologie du surréalisme sous l'Occupation and perhaps a couple more books on Surrealist art during the War years and mix it with a bit of Nazi occultism, and BOOM! -- here is your book Del Rey. I think CM is one of the more exciting voices in SF in the 21st century. He is constantly pushing for new ideas, bring in radical politics, philosophy, art, and turn them into stories that are fresh.
He is one SF writer who I find myself buying each new book he publishes new. There are only a handful of living writers who I do that for. That alone, is probably all the review you need.
    I liked it.
The blurb above made me think that Mieville might be branching out farther than he has here.

    My Brain Hurts
Interesting premise and good characters, but the execution is lacking. Using time travel as a military technology both saves and dooms the human race in at least 5 different time lines. I am sure some ppl will like this, but I like it when the hero wins. Victor Shilo dies over and over... everything he does makes things worse. His last death actually seems to save the day, but I am guessing it will prove to be bad for humans when the next book comes out. it is just too depressing to read about the hero failing and dying over and over. I really liked the characters and the universe, but the time travel thing baked my brain and the depressing story line just ruinef it for me. Luke Daniels us great though.
    Another great story
I really enjoyed this book and the Synchronicity War series. Luke Daniels does another awesome job of bringing the characters to life.
I was so happy to see this release!
I absolutely loved the Synchronicity Wars series and was very pleased with the new release of this book! I can only hope that the story continues.. It's awesome to hear from old friends and even meet some new people in the story. To the author: PLEASE keep this story going!!!
this was really a very entertaining series for me.
I love the concept of the artificial intelligence beings. I will definitely read anything from this writer
    Awesome
loved the series from start to finish. Luke Daniels narration is awesome as always. Definitely recommend to anyone who likes space Sci fi type story's. Interesting temporal concepts too.

The human race started the sixth mass extinction on Earth.
A chain of subglacial volcanoes erupt in Iceland. The melting ice floods the countryside. Poisonous gas descends on Scotland. A tsunami devastates the Norwegian coastline. An ash cloud rises into the atmosphere, blotting out the sun across Europe, ushering in a new Ice Age. Dozens of nuclear power plants, flooded by ocean water, experience meltdowns. Millions perish. Many more are displaced. All on the first day.
On the second day, a series of earthquakes moving in a straight line, reveal the presence of something massive walking across the landscape. Concealed by a thick, radioactive ash cloud, the 'aberration' heads west, toward Russia.

Under his new title as Assistant Science Advisor to the President, Wright is sent to Europe with a team of Army Rangers, where he uncovers the truth about the ancient behemoth laying waste to the world: there have been five mass extinctions on planet Earth, and the aberration has been present at each.
On the third day, the world fights back.
    And loses.
Separated from his family by continents and oceans ravaged by countless disasters and populated by strange new life, Wright struggles to survive in an evolving world. The Apocalypse Machine will finish it.
Jeremy Robinson returns to the Kaiju thriller genre he popularized with the largest Kaiju to ever appear in fiction: the Apocalypse Machine. Bursting with all the epic action, desperate struggle and complex characters that listeners have come to expect, Robinson takes the world to the brink.
    Members Reviews:
    Not his best work unfortunately.
I'm a big fan of Jeremy Robinson, but not this book. it was filled with too many characters I didn't care about, and too many one shot characters that didn't move the story along. I was so bored by the last couple hours that I just wanted it to end. I wish I could recommend it, but I just can't.
    Totally engrossing story
You know you've got a good book when it's nearly impossible to take a break from listening to the story - or when you can't stop thinking about it when doing something else. I found this world that Robinson created to be incredible. Love the characters and the way the book was set up - a mix of first person (which I normally shy way from) and third person points of view. Just incredible story telling and Kafer is one of my favorite narrators. Brilliant.
    Read -- Don't Listen
An exciting yarn that requires great expenditure of suspended disbelief read by someone trying to sound like Rod Serling introducing an episode of Twilight Zone.
    The End is Neigh....again!
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Gotta love end of the world, derivative stories by Jeremy Robinson. Otherwise, no so much.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
It rolls along in typical Jeremy Robinson fashion.

In 267,000 BCE the continent was its own world, untouched by the planetwide catastrophe that ended the reign of the dinosaurs over 65 million years before. A traveler arrives in the jungles of this ancient world who will fight to survive carnivorous creatures in a land never meant for humankind.
In another time and in a land far distant, men and women struggle to recover from the loss of so many of their own in a battle. Inside of this group, Colonel Jack Collins has summoned the best of the best from the most secretive organization in the United States government, the Event Group, to help him in his quest. The new mission is to recover one of their own: to bring home a lost soldier from a world that existed in the distant past.

The trail to find the technology to accomplish time travel will be ripe with treachery and murder as the group fights to bring home their friend, Captain Carl Everett, a man who was lost in a battle to save the world. This will be a fight that, if lost, will change the very history of the planet and thus our present.

too many characters for length of story
overall this was an interesting read but I wished there had been more character sub.plots
The Event Group continue to rock!
What made the experience of listening to The Traveler the most enjoyable?
Richard Poe for one, who always brings it. Just the overall experience of the Event Group, and the interplay of the characters, is always a good time.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Traveler?
The descriptions of the Antarctic were compelling, esp. the wildlife.
What about Richard Poes performance did you like?
Everything. He is consistently one of the most professional and listenable performers on Audible. His reading of the Russians, and the Frenchmen, are compelling.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The epilogue was damn good work.
    Any additional comments?
OK so they use the words" a**" and "frozen" far , FAR too often ( not offensive, just tiresome )> Not sure the use of "rock" was correct either. There were more than the usual number of little hiccups and such, and it could have been edited better.
That said, it is a strong contributor to the series, and well worth the credit!
another great story , one of the best
loved it one of sires best narrator great job need another one please, thank you
    The Event Series is fun.
Would you consider the audio edition of The Traveler to be better than the print version?
I always prefer paper for every story. The surroundings and performer place their interpretation upon the story; impeding my own imagination.
Now if you can't read, listen!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No. The event series is not going to make anyone cry. There will be chuckles and "great jobs" though.
    Any additional comments?
The series is fun. I enjoy the writer. He has grown the characters in fantastic ways.

    Publisher's Summary:
"From the renowned social critic, energy expert, and bestselling author James Howard Kunstler, The Harrows of Spring concludes the quartet of his extraordinary World Made by Hand novels, set in an American future of economic and political collapse, where electricity, automobiles, and the familiar social structures of the "old times" are a misty memory.
In the little upstate New York town of Union Grove, springtime is a most difficult season, known as "the six weeks want," when fresh food is scarce and winter stores have dwindled. Young Daniel Earle returns from his haunting travels around what is left of the United States intent on resurrecting the town newspaper. He is also recruited by the town trustees to help revive the Hudson River trade route shut down peevishly by the local grandee, planter Stephen Bullock. Meanwhile, a menacing gang of Social Justice Warriors styling themselves as agents of the Berkshire People's Republic appear one evening to camp on the outskirts of town. Their leaders are the imposing Amazonian beauty Flame Aurora Greengrass and the charismatic grifter Sylvester "Buddy" Goodfriend, progressive to a fault in their politics and intent on extracting whatever tribute they can from people of Union Grove.
Romance, politics, bunko, violence, and family tragedy swirl through the thrilling finale to Kunstler's bestselling series. The Harrows of Spring is a powerful, heart-wrenching, and satisfying conclusion to this poignant history of the future."

    Done...
If you could sum up The Harrows of Spring in three words, what would they be?
    Story is done.
What did you like best about this story?
It finished things up for me.
What does Jim Meskimen bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He wasn't boring and fun to listen to in the car.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    No.
    Any additional comments?
This last book wasn't anything amazing. It finished the story of the other books. Glad its done and I can move on now. The only part that didn't make sense to me was the direction he took the Bullock character in. It seemed out of context based on the last couple of books.
    The best series ever!
No series of any author, topic, or kind has been written to compare . Sci fi romance ( just a touch) adventure, prepper( just enough) foodie ( glorious ) and drink , I am standing by , yeasty rich full bodied triple tripel ale in hand
Love this series. Well thought out and organized.
So much fun to listen to. Always a great plot with engaging story lines and an alternative future which may be further from possible today than when the series began.
    The Harrows Of Spring
The story was so well written and read that I had a three day binge because I had to finish it. So wonderful to believe in the resilience of a community. I could visualize each scene and feel the hardship, pain and final coming to terms with the new world. Would love to read more on the growth of the community and the people, but so many of those series get bogged down. This ended well.

    Down it's throat, again
Few! Finally finished. Yes I enjoyed. I did find myself dreading any battle since the same phrases and concepts were simply trotted-out every. single. time -- and for a series with lots of battles, that was really often.
    A reasonably satisfying resolution.
    Yeah, 4/5.
    Great Audio Book
what a wild ride of emotions during the reading and listening of this audio book.
I take it by the ending that there will be a book 4 down the road.
    Sacrifices we're made.
It's nice to never know if one or many of the main characters will make it and it takes a strong storyteller to make it happen while keeping the reader engaged. This is a hard yet thrilling book to read with every manner of heroics and sacrifice every space drama requires. Again as with the other books, he repeatedly repeats as if just to use the extra words as a filler. It's probably the most frustrated I've been with a author who otherwise writes a great story. I find my self pulled from the story hoping he'll quickly finish the rambling so the story can continue.
    book of short stories
jumps all over the place. Voices change every few minutes. Very hard to follow at least for me..
Closure for the the never ending war
Revenge of the Ancients is a satisfying conclusion to the Crimson Worlds Refugees trilogy. With the main fleet headed to Shangra-lai. Admiral Compton leads a rear guard effort to mislead the Regent's forces running a nonstop gauntlet of enemy vessels. In spite of the feint, the Regent discovers the hidden world and presses the attack. At the same time, a scout ship sent in search of the final secret human settlement finds nothing but another trap. With things looking pretty hopeless, Cutter with the aid of the ancient technology develops a weapon powerful enough to take down the Regent, but requires a stealth mission to succeed.
The sci-fi elements are in line with earlier installments.

The conclusion to The Decline and Fall of the Galactic Empire series.
    Members Reviews:
    Action packed story
This is book three of the trilogy and the author wraps up the story in a good fashion. At the beginning of the book I had a bit of a problem placing which series this was and arranging the correct characters in this series, but I did manage to get it all straight in the first quarter of the book. In this trilogy Nuttalls narrative threads a classic Roman antiquity into the story which for history buffs like me is fantastic.
Our protagonist Roman Garibaldi is leading an alliance of naval officers, rebels and alien outsiders. They are heading to earth in hopes of saving the Federation from its mad Emperor. Like in the other stories there are pirates, war lords and others seeking power and a piece of the Federation. This is a civil war so the suspense builds as we learn who aligns their allegiance to which side in the war. And of course we end with a mighty battle.
The book is well written with action galore. Nuttall writes a good space battle. Tim Gerard Reynolds does a good job narrating the book. Reynolds was born in Ireland, lives in New York City and is a stage actor who is now a full time audiobook narrator.
    Good, not great.
I've been enjoying all of Nuttall's books set in various parallel 'Galactic Empires'. Compared to the Empire's Corps and Ark Royal I find this one the most bland for one reason or another. The pace is a bit slower and the narrative is a little bit more focused on the author's own world view and less on character and plot development. Honestly this is the first series of Nuttall's where I really don't feel anything at all about the characters as they aren't really characters at all, just tools the author uses to hammer home his own personal take on what is wrong with society. Drake and Garibaldi have no real depth or personality beyond endless internal monologs focused on their ideology.
The afterward in this book is a glaring indicator of how he might be inflating his own political and cultural insights. it might be high-time for the author to take the rhetoric down a notch and return to focusing on character struggles and less on societal issues.
    Glad I got through it
At this point its obvious Marius's mental state is questionable at best. This is more of that. The galactic politics and strategic battles are interesting, but at one point I felt unable to continue and listened through a different series before returning.

    Another Home Run
I'm NOT a SciFi fan, but I am REALLY enjoying this series...I definitely recommend it and anything else by Chris Fox and the narrator too.
    All I can say is...more please...ASAP!!
    Great series starter
Great performance of a good story. I like the concept behind this series and look forward to listening to more.
    GOOD! WELL WRITTEN AND NARRATED.
Enjoyable. Good to listen to a well written and performed book. I am looking forward to the next book.
short, entertaining, and it fills in a few blanks
good work here, tittle says it all really. a great addition to the series. and now becuase audible requires that I saw at lest twenty words on the subject. FIZGIG IS TOO CUTE A NAME FOR A BAD ASS MILITARY COMANDER. there, that is my only complaint.
    Great prequel
What did you love best about Exiled: Void Wraith Prequel Story?
I listened to Exiled after Destroyer (Exiled didn't pop up in my you might like selection until after I had bought Destroyer). I really love how the characters were introduced and getting the back story of the main character. Its very interesting to see how Nolan started off and what he became by the end.
Who was your favorite character and why?
In this book, I would Annie is my favorite character. Her take no crap from anyone and smile when you take out the bad guy attitude was the perfect contrast to the prim and proper officers from OFI.
    Any additional comments?
I loved the entire series. I would highly recommend Chris Fox's The Deathless series as well as the Void Wraith series. Mr. Fox is an amazing writer and Mr. Burke is a wonderful narrator. I appreciate the way he embraces each character throughout narration.

    Publisher's Summary:
Entry number three in the popular Hell's Gate series by 28-time New York Times best-selling author David Weber and Joelle Presby.
The war between magically gifted Arcana and psionically talented Sharona continues to rage. The dragon-borne Arcanan assault across five universes has been halted at Fort Salby by a desperate defense, but at atrocious cost. One of those costs was the life of Crown Prince Janaki, heir to the newly created Sharonian Empire, who went knowingly to his death in the tradition expected of the House of Calirath. And another price will be the sacrifice of his younger sister, Grand Imperial Princess Andrin, now heir of Sharona, for the accords creating the Sharonian Empire require the marriage of the heir to the Crown to wed a Uromathian prince.
Andrin bears her family's Talent, the Glimpses, which show flashes of events yet to come. She knows the accords must be secured...and, like her brother, she will pay any price, make any sacrifice for her duty to her people.
Sharona's soldiers dig in, facing the Arcanans in a tense standoff that cannot last long. Both sides continue rushing reinforcements toward the front, but how do armies fight wars when they can reach one another only through the portals that join the universes? And far, far behind the front, carried by dragons, a young Voice name Shaylar and her husband, Jathmar, hurtle deeper and deeper into Arcanan captivity, their only protection the fierce personal honor of the Andaran officer whose men massacred all of their companions in the horrendous misunderstanding that began the entire conflict.
Men and women of honor on both sides must grapple with the terrible costs and deadly secrets of the spreading cataclysm, and in the shadows, those who will balk at neither treason nor murder drive the conspiracies that pour fuel into the furnace. The stakes are high, and the pieces are in motion, but there are factors known not even to the conspirators, and not even a Calirath can Glimpse the final outcome.

I am ok with most of the book. But the ending?
I am ok with most of the book, but I did not like the ending. If there is not another book coming (if there is Weber's website should say so), it leaves far too much up in the air.
    Very good overall
If you could sum up The Road to Hell in three words, what would they be?
Seems to get caught up in minor details....but they may be important later...for some unknown (for now) reason a calendar reference was introduced using 3 separate systems but the multiverse only has 2 civilizations....if it's a hint of more to come then it seems a bit premature.....but I still enjoyed the book and await the next installment.
    Dont expect a conclusion
I like David Weber but he has this bad habit of writing books that expound so much it takes forever to get anywhere. The result is a series that lasts forever and waists too much time on logistics & the emotional state of a throwaway character who is introduced in way too much detail moments before his death.
I feel like very little has happened between book 1-3 & it should have been shortened to just one novel.
