But though he may be all-powerful in the South Pacific, today he is in Los Angeles with a problem only a detective can solve. The general has an eye on a postwar promotion to the White House, and an aide has stolen his war chest, his donor list, and a handful of embarrassing private letters. To get them back, Toby may need some help.
Lucky for him, he's just met Dashiell Hammett, one of the finest crime novelists of all time. Toby isn't a soldier, but he soon finds he just might end up dying at a generals whim nonetheless.

    Publisher's Summary:
Genie for Hire: A Biff Andromeda Mystery is a private eye novel - with a paranormal twist. An ancient genie in a modern, buff body, Biff can't use his magical powers for his own benefit, so he opens a detective agency in a Miami suburb. A damsel in distress, photographer Sveta Pshkov, hires him to retrieve a stolen set of boudoir photos she took of a Russian mobster's wife - snapped for her boyfriend's pleasure, not her husband's. Biff's investigation uncovers the spreading tentacles of the Russian mafia. The case turns personal when he realizes that the dangerous female genie he has loved and lost over centuries has a desperate stake in the outcome. Joined by his companions, a resusciated squirrel and a magical sylph who takes the form of a butterfly, Biff follows his super-sensitive nose into hidden corners of South Florida and dark regions of human behavior. With his sarcastic wit, his ability to turn into a wisp of vapor, and magic as old as the ages, Biff battles a pack of ruthless criminals - and his own romantic obsession. Author's note: No squirrels were harmed during the writing of this novel.

Murder, Mystery and Magic--What's Not to Love?
Private Eye Biff Andromeda uses his magical powers as a genie to track down a killer in the Aventura area north of the Miami-Dade County boundary. Hired by a photographer to retrieve stolen files, he never expects to end up solving her murder instead. Sveta is more than the average family photographer, which he soon learns as he delves into her associates. Before he can open his legendary Third Eye, heâs awash in Russian mobsters, smugglers, and muscled henchmen. With a squirrel for a companion and his lady love turning up unexpectedly, Biff has his hands full. Will his powers be enough to bring down the bad guys, especially when one of them has tapped into an evil and powerful force? This story will both entertain and entrance you. The combination of magical elements with a solid mystery is a charmer. Youâll definitely want more of this clever sleuth and his memorable sidekicks.
    So so at best
I normally love the work of Neil Plakcy. Just about anything he writes, I'm confident I'll enjoy. With perhaps the exception of his more erotic selections, being a lesbian, I don't go there. But everything else I have enjoyed. But this book really really needs a good editor. Not just for the typos either. The story wonders around, does he know that, does he not. Wait a minute, why is he confused here, he figured that out in the last chapter, and so on. Plakcy is a good enough writer that he can hold your interest even with the fatal flaws in this book. But if he would just put the editing effort in, he could have a winner here too. Unfortunately, as is, this is a most frustrating read, and probably not worth your effort.
    I'd read more!
Wasn't exactly what I expected -- but I enjoyed it. I'd read more from this writer. Something to consider reading.
    A pretty well written yarn
I really did not know what to expect from this novel. It was pretty farfetched but I enjoyed reading it as my first Kendal Ebook.
    Really?
Sorry, this did not rock my boat. Got so bored with the goofiness finally gave up and put the book away.

    A lovely story
This is one of the best of the movies and no wonder, this is a lovely story and as I come near to the end of the series, I am happy that I have stuck with it -- reading them all -- and made it to this.
It's a good plot and the characters live up to their potential. I'm not sure Mimi is in it at all... but Fazio plays an important role.
At this point I suppose the books are becoming like the comfort food that Salvo occasionally eats. They are a good want to pass a Sunday afternoon.
Perhaps I am finally forgiving Montalbano a little for his obsession with age. Good grief. If not forgiven, accepted to a greater or lesser extent.
Salvo is special, as are all the continuing characters. I'm sure I've written that before in an earlier review. He is full of faults and I guess either you accept them in order to accept him, or you don't.
There is one strange thing. I did read this over an especially long span of time as I was busy with other things... and the very last sentence that Fazio utters (I don't want to spoil anything for anyone so I will be very vague here)... I admit I totally do not understand why he utters it. Why what happens does indeed happen. I feel pretty stupid. I must've missed something, somewhere along the way.
I sit here and puzzle over it... and get no where. I suppose this will just have to be one of those unsolved mysteries....
    Months of Entertainment
Recommend the reader begins with one of the first novels (The Shape of Water?) and if you like it just keep reading the list, chronologically, because Inspector Montalbano ages through the long series causing narrative twists. These subtle, fascinating stories set in Sicily, are beautifully cast and directed, as I imagine Fellini would have done, and are parables of life and human nature, Then watch the movies made from the books which can be rented on Amazon video (excellent subtitles) or Italian video (no subtitles), and you will have months of delightful entertainment. Sadly, I am near the end.
    Very Entertaining
As ever with the Montalbano books, "Angelica's Smile" is gripping, entertaining and original.

    Title: Killing Bridezilla
    Subtitle: A Jaine Austen Mystery

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 28 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-13-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 28 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
When writer-for-hire Jaine Austen signs on to script vows for the ultimate Bridezilla, "I do's" soon become "I wish I hadn't's"--and curtains for the bride spell a veil of woes for Jaine
Jaine's accepted her share of lame gigs to pay the bills, but rewriting Shakespeare's got to be an all-time low. The fiasco begins with a call from Jaine's high-school nemesis, uber rich uber witch Patti Devane. It seems Patti will soon be sashaying down the aisle with another former classmate from Hermosa High, and she'd like the exchange of vows to evoke Romeo and Julietexcept without the "downer" of an ending.
Even worse than the assignment itself is dealing with Patti as a client. At least Jaine's not alone, as nobody can stand the demanding, spoiled, and incredibly rude Bridezilla from Hell. Patti's managed to rack up an amazingly long list of enemies in a short time, not the least of whom include her prospective mother-in-law, the soon-to-be ex-wife of Patti's stolen soon-to-be groom, and just about everyone involved in the wedding preparations. So it isn't a complete surprise when the erstwhile Juliet plunges to her death during her balcony scene.
The loosened bolts that brought down the bride were clearly an act of sabotage--what's not so obvious is whom, among Patti's numerous haters, committed this murder most foul. Was it the caterer she threatened to ruin? The bridesmaid tossed out of the wedding party for being too chubby? Jaine's determined to learn the truth--if only to end the hideous walk down memory lane kicked off by her association with Patti.
Between fending off advances from the nerd of her high school nightmares and figuring out ways to stop Prozac the cat from corrupting the victim's pet Poodle, Jaine's involvement in this case keeps veering between comedy and tragedy. That is, until another body is discovered--and the killer starts laying plot for a final act--starring Jaine

    Another great Jaine book
So far I have not been disappointed with any of the books in this series. This one was no different. It was funny with well thought out plot lines and developed characters.
Not a fan of this narrator
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
No. I love reading this series but Ms. Pressley has a very annoying warble in her voice that she uses with the characters. The only change is a higher and higher pitch to her warble between female characters. I couldn't finish. Truly awful.

    Length: 28 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Expert Book Reviews
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 5 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
David Baldacci tells a fast-paced, action-packed story in King and Maxwell, his sixth entry in the detective thriller series. Although the military and political situations are complicated, Sean King and Michelle Maxwell unravel the mystery logically, piece by piece. As a result, the entire story falls into place neatly, and readers won't be left with unanswered questions. The developments are surprising, and their implications frightening, but the entire premise is believable.
This review will prepare you for the world of King and Maxwell. Baldacci has a tight writing style, but his enthusiasm shines through, and the overall story is well-crafted, with enough action to keep readers on the edge of their seats without overwhelming them. A native of Washington, D.C., David Baldacci makes it easy for the readers to grasp the setting. As this review explains, the characters are just as well-crafted as the novel and setting. Michelle Maxwell and Sean King are three-dimensional, and their relationship has many layers. Even the teenage characters are treated well. They are intelligent and defy the angst-ridden stereotypes. This review guides you through the strengths and weaknesses of King and Maxwell, even incorporating critical reviews of the novel.
    Members Reviews:
Great review of a suspenseful tale.
In King and Maxwell, David Baldacci tells the story of how Sean King and Michelle Maxwell team up again to handle a case that is incredibly personal. They start by investigating the mysterious communication that a teenager receives from his father, who supposedly died in combat. The story starts simply enough but soon the duo realizes that there is much more going on behind the scenes that involves people high up the ladder in their former careers. This analysis goes beyond just listing the main plot points and expands on how the characters handle the hunt for answers. Like all Baldacci's books, I was not disappointed and felt that this analysis provided a great companion to the story and a way to stay more connected to the characters in the TV series.
    Convincing Review
This review convinced me to continue on with Baldaccis series and purchase the sixth book, King and Maxwell. While it was shorter than many other Expert Book Review products, I still found it useful. The âWho would like it?â section says âLovers of political thrillers and conspiracy theorists will get a kick out this book.â That perfectly describes me, and what I am looking for continuing on with Baldaccis series. I also found the review helpful in pointing out the good and bad parts of the book. As the review states, the characters are very relatable, and the âgood guysâ arenât all good, nor the âbad guysâ all bad. Since the bad parts the review states seem mostly related to those having not read the first five books, which I have, I made up my mind to purchase the book. Expert Book Reviews helped me make the commitment, and I am glad that I did.
    King and Maxwell succeed again
Good read. King and Maxwell are former Secret Service agents who are now PIs in partnership. Then they have a sometimes assistant Edgar who is an absolute genius with computers even though he is socially awkward.
Their "client" is a sixteen year old boy, Tyler, who has just been informed that his dad was KIA in Afghanistan.

    Members Reviews:
    Don't bother
I will speak of the positives first. There are recipes included. The narrator Linda Bloom did a pretty good job giving the characters a voice.
Now the negatives. There is no reason for Suzanne to investigate this murder. She claims he's a friend as well as a customer, but there's no indication of any kind of friendship between them. She knows nothing about this guy. The characters, including Suzanne, are unlikable and uninteresting. Suzanne keeps telling her friends not to get involved because it's dangerous yet she insists on getting involved. She lacks people skills when talking to suspects. The book is slow paced and not very interesting. I read this book out of sheer determination because I paid for it!
    great book.

    good read

    Took a while
but after a couple of hours I was totally invested in the story. Odelia's the kind of character you wish were real so that you could actually meet her.
Here's hoping the rest of the series becomes available in audio format soon!
    Delightful mystery with engaging characters
It was refreshing to listen to a book with a middle aged protagonist and an intriguing murder mystery. While I had my suspicions about who did it, I wasn't sure until it was revealed.
The mystery itself doesn't begin right away but I enjoyed getting to know Odelia, Gary and the cast of characters as they discover that there is a mystery to be solved and how they respond once they know.
I thought Lynne Darlington did an excellent job with the narration. Her POV voice sounds
natural and fits the character well. She also does a good job of distinguishing characters.
All in all a very satisfying listen, I do hope Sue Ann Jaffarian publishes more in this series as audio books.
Odelia Grey is one sassy lady!
Would you listen to Too Big to Miss again? Why?
Definitely!!! Funny, with real lovable characters and great story lines.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Too Big to Miss?
All of the book.....from start to finish.
Have you listened to any of Lynne Darlingtons other performances? How does this one compare?
No, I haven't. But she has nailed Odelia just right!
    Any additional comments?
Absolutely loved 'Too Big To Miss' in the new audio format.
Lynne Darlington was for me the perfect choice as the reader, giving Odelia the perfect sassiness!

    Members Reviews:
    Strong story
Held my attention from start to finish, first book in a while. Well written, no clichés and didn't get predictable.
    Not for me.
Would you try another book from Alex Gray and/or Joe Dunlop?
No for Alex Gray. Yes for Joe Dunlop. Disappointed.
Has The Swedish Girl turned you off from other books in this genre?
No. I love the UK mystery scene.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Nothing memorable. The story starts off on a faulty premise that the young man arrested could be proved to be the killer just because he had been intimate with her. The main characters are flat. Tall handsome police superintendent with school teacher wife. Best friend profiler with pathologist wife and cute baby. Detective who is worried about her career. Kids on their own for the first time. That's it. Good writing. Great narrator - normally I would stop listening. Life is too short.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    No.
    Any additional comments?
I'm sure others may enjoy but I wouldn't recommend.
Drug on. And on. And ON.
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This was really all about the story/writing, the narration was great. The storyline was just a long, slow slog, pointlessly so.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Something else British/UK. :-) My newest obsession is UK authors. They have such a fresh perspective and authentic style for the most part.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Joe Dunlop?
    Sure.
What character would you cut from The Swedish Girl?
DI Grant, followed closely by DS Wilson.
    Any additional comments?
I found that I cared very, very little about ANY of these characters, they were either blundering or utterly self-involved.

    Publisher's Summary:
Emma Spire is the daughter of the assassinated Surgeon General of the United States. She has been on the cover of every national magazine. Her beauty, her brains, her bravery - all are public property. Everyone wants a piece of her - and she must escape the feeding frenzy at all costs. But she cannot, and the consequences are deadly.
Thus the stage is set for Dr. Alan Gregory's most stunning, brain-teasing crisis yet. The Colorado-based psychologist-sleuth must solve a case of twisted desire and terror to save not only a golden girl pursued by the furies of fame but also his wife, Boulder County D.A. Lauren Crowder, imprisoned on suspicion of murder. For it was Lauren who took Emma under her wing, and it was Lauren who pulled the trigger on the mysterious stalker who menaced Emma's safety and sanity.
Step by step, amid accelerating acts of terror, Alan Gregory suspects he may be dealing not with a sick mind fixated on a fantasy of female perfection but with deadly greed fueled by a high-tech prize that may be worth billions. Meanwhile, his investigation is turned into a desperate race against time as a medical emergency threatens to turn his wife's incarceration into a death sentence.

    "It's complicated."
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Fewer annoying characters and a less incredible plot. The Emma character was especially irritating: a self-absorbed whiner. I had trouble understanding the other characters' empathy for her. And, I thought if I heard "It's complicated" one more time, I'd run screaming into the night.
What do you think your next listen will be?
    More crime fiction
What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He's an excellent narrator; I've listened to many of his books. To me, the spoken story is superior to the merely read one.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    Sam Purdy's wry humor.
    Any additional comments?
Mr. White should return to writing about quirky Mormons. Much better novel fodder there...
    Good story. Terrible narrator
I absolutely hate Hill's portrayal of female characters. NOT enjoyable!
Story was entertaining as usual. Emma not quite a believable character - strong woman referring to her "daddy"?
5 Stars for a Great Story
I loved this book. I have it on Kindle too, but I love Dick Hill as a reader. I really like the Alan Gregory novels and grab them up as soon as they are published.
