Publisher's Summary:
Naples, 1932. A week before Easter, springtime offers fragrant temptations to the men and women of Naples - but evil also lurks in the sweet-smelling spring air. At the high-class brothel in the center of town known as Paradiso, Viper, the most famous prostitute of all, is found dead after being suffocated with a pillow. Her last client swears that he left her alive and well. But when her next client arrived, he found her dead. Who killed her and why? Ricciardi must untangle a complex knot of greed, frustration, jealousy, and rancor in order to solve the riddle of Viper's death. As he does, he will discover an endless trail of conflicting emotions just beneath the surface of a city that lives on passion.
De Giovanni's mysteries unfold with such sinuous ease that they seem to write themselves. They enchant, surprise, and keep listeners enthralled. Commissario Ricciardi, with the dubious gift of being able to see and hear the last seconds in the lives of those who have suffered a violent death, is one of the most fascinating investigators to make his appearance in the world of international crime fiction. In Viper, the lustful and boisterous city of Naples has never been more seductive.
Members Reviews:
A plethora of motives makes this a baffling case
When the infamous beauty Viper is killed at work in a brothel, Commissario Ricciardi has no trouble identifying people with a motive for murder. The problem is too many suspects. Viper stirred up love and jealousy like no other working girl in Naples.
While investigating Viper's work place, an upscale brothel, Ricciardi continues to struggle with his own tormenting love life. He vacillates pathetically between the rich and stylish Livia, whose beauty turns heads everywhere, and Enrica, the shy young lady across the street, who appeals to him in an entirely different way.
But Ricciardi is convinced he must not love, not with his hereditary curse. Like his long dead mother, Ricciardi sees the spirits of those who have died violently and hears their last thoughts.
Maurizio de Giovanni weaves his themes of love and death with lyrical joie de vivre. The story unfolds in a wonderful atmosphere of capricious spring weather and frenetic preparations for the Easter holiday. At the same time, a current of fear runs through the populace â fear of the Black Shirts and the spies of the Fascist regime.
The Commissario Ricciardi novels are totally engrossing, and fans should relish this latest addition to the series. It's best to read the books from the beginning, and in order, for fullest enjoyment of the exotic ambience, the wry humor and the ongoing personal dramas.
I fervently hope there are more books to come. De Giovanni always leaves some tantalizing loose ends...
âViperâ is so much more than a police procedural. What an excellent series.
First Sentence: So tell me: do you know what love is?
Viper, the most famous prostitute in Naples, is found dead in her room at the Paradiso, a high-class brothel. Commissario Ricciardi, with Brigadier Mairone and the outspoken Dr. Bruno Modo, is charged with finding the killer in this crime of so many emotions, during a time when Mussolini and the Brown Shirts are in power.
One definitely canât complain about having to wait for the murder to happen.
