Emma didn't know how long he hid, silent and unmoving, in the large Victorian wardrobe to the side of her single bed. She didn't know how long he peered out, salivating and drooling, between the two heavy dark oak doors, and watched, mesmerized, as she slowly drifted into fitful sleep. She didn't know what time he pushed the doors open and crept towards her in the drab grey darkness of the night.
Detective Inspector Gravel finds himself floundering when a local 19-year-old university student is abducted and imprisoned by a sadistic serial killer, who has already tortured and killed five young women.

Totally. Awesome.
Any additional comments?
This was one of the best serial killer books I've listened to in a while, and I freaking love these books! A fantastic mystery, good characters, some sudden twists and a satisfying ending. I liked every minute of it. Jake Urry is endlessly fantastic at audio book narration.

Portraits of the Dead
This was a very creepy but great book! I was glad I got a chance to listen to it. I loved it. It was scary and I was pulling for Emma the whole book. I was hoping she made it. I think the characters were believable in this book and the plot was scary. "This review copy audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost."
So Unexpectedly Great, I Binge Read It!
Where does Portraits of the Dead rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I listen to a lot of audiobooks and for awhile my favorites were serial killer stories however I grew tired of them. The plots are always so similar to the point that all the stories just sort of meld into one.
This story however took me by surprise! I loved the perspective and the story really had me hooked from the beginning. I listened to the whole book in one sitting and now I kind of regret it. I want more.
The killer is a total psychopath and delusional. Some of the cops are not the brightest bulb and I loved the killers mother!! It had me yeling outloud at some points but I won't say why.
If you like gritty thrillers, you will love this one.
What other book might you compare Portraits of the Dead to and why?
This was the first time I have listened to John Nicholl and I don't know why I never found him before with all my searches for great thrillers. Rest assured, this won't be the last time I listen to him. I plan to download another of his stories today.
Have you listened to any of Jake Urrys other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have listened to one other performance by Jack Urry and he is always great! The voice he uses for the mother cracked me up as well as the voice of the cop from Texas. I often have a hard time listening to accents but Jack speaks very clearly and it was quite enjoyable.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I really loved the ending, it really took me by surprise which is rare.
