    Dark hero's & mayhem.
well I read the first book then bought the Kindle series of six. After listening to book one's Audible sample I purchased books One and Two on Audible and if anything book two is even better.
James Patrick Cronin does a very credible job with his voice characterisations. To me he made it a pleasurable listen. He is also on my approved list of Narrators..
I am pleased to say I have added yet another author to my list of good and interesting authors.
Kindle Unlimited started me on this series and yes I indeed could have read the entire series on unlimited. But really let's support our authors by purchasing their work, both Kindle and Audible.
    A Good Listen
    Any additional comments?
It is a good story. It is fast and fun. The writer has a good wit (if a bit repetitive). A couple plot twist were contrived. And, it was bit too short. The reader was excellent. All in all worth the credit. There are two additional books in the series not yet on Audible. I would definitely continue the series especially if Cronin does the narration.
    !Still kept my attention
I wish the author stops ending this series in a cliff hanger. ***The cliff hanger to find his sister in book one ends with it UNRESOLVED here! *** The author presents 2 conflicts. One is resolved and the main one, for Mac making a pack with the demon is still unresolved.
Despite that, I will get the next one when it is released. There is action from the first to the last of the book. And ohhhhh that last action was great! He has just one day to complete his task and in 6 listening hours he is captured countless times, fall in love, chased by zombies and did not completed part of his goal from book 1. There is no down time in the action. You really get a feel that they are racing against time.
Mac has become more confident as he memories return. But a greater part of his confidence for him is his handling of his current situations; ie did he maim instead of kill? He feels guilty about withholding information from Ricky and tries to keep his feelings to himself because of it. The fact that he realizes this is a sign of a "goodness" in him and not a demon.
Ricky is a bad ass alpha werewolf who can kick the ass of a gargoyle and keep on ticking. She elaves dead or broken bodies in her wake. She is such a dynamic character. She needs her own series at least a novella on her and Mac as teens. Someone should have told Mac about having a short live span for telling half truths to a woman. He should be dead from misleading an alpha. *** spoiler *** The fact that she did not kill him speaks to their pass and current relationship.
So Ricky and Mac are kicking ass and taking no prisoners when Ricky gets into a little ***spoilers*** trouble. No that is not correct, she gets serious life threatening trouble.

Remember that car that passed you near midnight on Route 66, doing 105 with its lights off? You wondered where it was going so quickly on that dark, dusty stretch of road, motor roaring, the driver glancing out the window as he blew by.
You just saw the founder of the Suicide Motor Club. Be grateful his brake lights never flashed. Be grateful his car was already full.
They roam America, littering the highways with smashed cars and bled-out bodies, a gruesome reflection of the unsettled '60s. But to anyone unlucky enough to meet them in the lonely hours of the night, they're just a blurry memory. That is, to all but one....
Two years ago, they left a witness in the mangled wreck of her family car, her husband dead, her son taken. She remembers their awful faces, despite their tricks and glamours. And she's coming for them - her thirst for vengeance even more powerful than their hunger for blood. On the deserted highways of America, the hunters are about to become the hunted....

    wonderfully sinister
The action scenes in this book are beyond compare. I've really enjoyed hearing the author read his last two works.
    Another Christopher Buehlman Classic!
Christopher Buehlman does an odd thing with his "horror" books, he makes it more about the story then the scares or the gruesome imagery. That is why his books are in a class above all others in the genre. And fans of his past works should keep an ear open for some amazing Easter eggs to a few of his other books. Suicide Motor Club is fantastic, and like all of Buehlman's other work the characters, setting, and dialogue are superb. He truly makes you feel like you are driving along these old country highways being tormented by the SMC!
    Terrifying and Amazing
Did not know what to expect. Not disappointed. Excellent story, excellent narration. One of my top books.
    A dark, delicious read

Actually, that last part isn't true. I know why the death cult is after me. It's because I saved that damned girl from them. I didn't know who she was at the time, but I'd have done it anyway. I just don't like it when girls get beat up; call me old fashioned. Still, I can tell she's hiding something behind those devilish eyes, and if I want to find out what it is, I'll have to help her.

Demons & a vampire & shifters, OH MY!
Scary good and full of action, adventure, suspense, but I am beginning to loathe Cipriano. I keep finding more of his stuff that I just have to read! At least I was lucky enough to get the audio on sale this time! But the rest of you don't need audio to appreciate the snarkiness. Or the personalities. OR the situations! See publisher's blurb for plot clues, but, really, just stick your nose in the pages and get carried away.
Audio performer Cronin really captured the essence of Mac!
    Worthy of the credit
Amnesia is not an original plot. A man with magical abilities waking in a dumpster with amnesia is not original. Dead Man, by Dimino Finn has the same opening. A man being a hero saving a female in distress is not original. This story is told with the action and paranormal creatures. It is written well enough and it is entertaining. Points were deduct because it does end in a cliff hanger and the lack or originality. But it is interesting enough that I will get the next book.
    Could not STOP!!!!
What did you love best about Cursed?
The story is just, great!!!! I loved it - everything about it!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Cursed?
The character building, it was layered & intriguing.
What about James Patrick Cronins performance did you like?
    Flawless!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    I laughed a lot!
    Any additional comments?
Great book! Try it, you'll see!
The Michael bay of novel writing
The book is nonstop action as it goes from one fight scene to the next. The main character has amnesia so theres not much character development. The whole book is about him rescuing a woman that he just met and has no connection with.
Also every literary cliche is used throughout this book. I had bought the second book by mistake so I got this one to read first. I hope the next one is better.
f you like the Dresden Files you will like this
Good story, great narrator. It is a lot like Dresden, the Iron Druid and the Demon accord series. Te only downside is that it is a little short in length.

Will finds himself in a unique medieval village constructed deep in a forest, its residents prosperous and healthy to an unnatural degree. The only issue is that the villagers have no idea what concoction will trigger those abilities. They must test. And the villagers have put that responsibility on one young girl - against her will.
Will makes his mark on the village in the woods, increasing their prosperity and helping to introduce innovations decades or centuries before their time. Yet Arthur, in his desperate need for power and control, will sabotage everything to retain his total control of the village - even if it means sacrificing his own daughter's life.

Historical inaccuracies and small plot holes
So far: 5 chapters in and there are some small issues i have with this book:
    1. English spoken in England in the 11th century =/= English spoken now. Its not only small words and arrangements but the entire language. When did Will learn this language?
    2. Written English in the 11th century =/= written English now so how did Will suddenly learn it? Is he secretly a major middle ages England history buff?

Sarama is the last of the White Mare's servants, descended from an ancient line conquered long ago by warrior tribes. Her father is the king of one such tribe. Her twin brother Agni is the king's heir. But she is heir to an older world, and a different way.
A sacred vision calls the White Mare westward, and Sarama follows. There, she finds a land where women rule, and men serve, and their language has no word for war. But the horsemen are coming. Sarama must choose between her own people and the people whom she has come to love, and find a way to save them both.
    Members Reviews:
    Adventure in pre-history, with horses
Sarama is the servant of the White Mare, the Lady of the Horses. Her mother died giving birth to her and her twin brother Agni. Agni is the heir of the king of the White Horse tribe; Sarama is heir to an older tradition, from before their mother's people became a part of the male-ruled tribes.
The old woman who was the White Mare's servant before her told Sarama that she will be the last one. There's no one else of the pure bloodline. When stories reach the tribe of a wealthy land far to the west, a land ruled by women, Sarama take the Mare and a pack pony, and heads west to find this land where maybe the Lady is still worshiped.
Before she goes, she asks Agni to promise not to lead the White Horse tribe west.
But the climate is changing; life on the steppes is getting harder. The tribes in most distant eastern lands are pushing west, seeking better prospects, and pushing everyone west of them further west.
Sarama finds her western land, and a wealthy and peaceful people who worship the Lady and are ruled by women. She finds peace and love. Also resistance and hostility. Some among the Lady's people think she's a spy for the tribes to the east, that she will lead them to this peaceful and and bring war.
And the tribes are coming. The pressure from the east isn't letting up, and the trives near the western edge of the steppe are starting to move.
Meanwhile, Agni is having his own problems. Their father the king is aging, and their older half-brother, Yama, is ambitious. When Yama's treachery leads to him being cast out of the tribe rather than elevated to the kingship, Agni takes his possessions and those who chose to follow him into exile and goes...where? What choices does he have, with no land on the steppes that he and his tiny band can take?
It's a reach to call this historical fiction; we don't know anything like this much about this period of pre-history. What it is, is plausible. Something like this had to happen, as nomadic tribes under climate pressure and population pressure encountered the earliest settled agricultural communities, with the food and the leisure to develop more art and technology than the nomads could support, but perhaps didn't initially have the same military capacity, because their relative prosperity left them without the need to raid each other.
As the horsemen moved west, the settled people would have needed a defense they didn't initially have any idea how to provide for themselves.
This is a very interesting take on this highly speculative period of history.

Ok so the first 5 chapters she is a bit whiney and whinge repetitively about her predicament. he's a miserable negative pratt but do stick with it. the book totally redeems itself soon after and it's a great book. The narrator is perfect for the character, at once whimsical and aloof and real too so you feel you know agnieshka. I'm sure I spelt that wrong, ah well. The wood is fascinating and the magic gets better and better. a highly engaging book.
    Thoroughly enjoyed!
Brilliant Narration, and a story that resembles a dark fairy tale, enjoyed this thoroughly. Highly recommend.

would recommend to everyone, especially fantasy enthusiasts
    Highly recommended!
Truly magical and completely engrossing! Really loved it and very sad as I came to its end! Beautifully written and very well read! A complete delight! Where are the rest of her books, please?
    Exceptional epic fantasy
Despite listening to over 300 books a year, I've only found two new fantasy authors I'd really recommend in 2016. This is a beautifully narrated story with hints of probably Russian folk tales, though I don't know where or how varied the author's influences. It feels like the literary equivalent or a monsoon in the desert.

Robot believers at the far end of the galaxy endeavor to create a true religion, but their efforts could be shattered by a shocking revelation. Far in the future, on the remote planet End of Nothing, sentient robots are engaged in a remarkable enterprise. They call their project Vatican-17: an endeavor to create a truly universal religion presided over by a pope, whose extreme godliness and infallible artificial intelligence are fed by telepathic human Listeners who psychically delve into the mysteries of the universe. But the great and holy mission could be compromised by one shocking revelation that threatens to inspire serious crises of faith among the spiritual, truth-seeking robotic acolytes while tearing them into warring religious factions; for the Listener Mary is claiming that she has just discovered Heaven.
There are those among the Clifford D. Simak faithful who consider Project Pope his masterpiece. But whether the crowning literary achievement of a multiple Hugo and Nebula Award-winning science-fiction Grand Master or merely another brilliant novel of speculative fiction to stand among his many, Simak's breathtaking search for God in the machine ingeniously blends science and spirituality in a truly miraculous way that few science fiction writers, if any, have been able to accomplish.

The merging of science and religion
I bought this book when I was a kid because I liked the cover. I never finished it. Decades later, I understand why.
Unlike a lot of other science fiction writers, Simak isn't especially concerned with plot or even character--at least not here. Yes, there are both in Project Pope, but the book is more about religion, spirituality, and our need to believe in something bigger than ourselves.
So, while there's some action here, there are also plenty of big, abstract ideas to take in. Admittedly, it's not a perfect novel, and frankly, it drags at times, but if you're looking for a break from the tried-and-true space opera, it's well worth a read.
Great way to pass time in the car
I discovered that Audible narration is often inexpensive on older sci-fi books so I listen to books during my commute. I'd never read this author before, but his books are incredible at pulling you into an unusual and unique story. I bought the first couple trepidatiously since they sounded so weird, but now I've bought almost every one with narration and have listened to most multiple times. While they were written decades ago, they don't seem as dated as some others in the genre that include obsolete (as of 2016) technology in a futuristic world.
Please add narration to more of his titles!
I finished it because it is very good and thoughtful science fiction
I read a lot of Simak when I was young (65 years ago). I had not read this one. I started reading Project Pope (which I had somehow missed in the past) for nostalgia. I finished it because it is very good and thoughtful science fiction, with lots of thought provoking and innovative ideas mixed with the strange scenes of different planets and universes. I am off to find more Simak to read.
In my view, a SciFi masterpiece. I have ...
In my view, a SciFi masterpiece. I have read this many times. The purchase was to replace a lost copy.
    do robots have souls?

Not Erikson at the helm but still a worthy Malazan
I thought this was a worthy addition to the Malazan world. Esselmont's writing style is a bit different to Erikson's but his story did retain the feel of a Malazan book. The plot was suitably entertaining and complex and Esselmont also did a great job with the characters, both the new and familiar ones.
The whole story took place in one city over the course of a single night. The city was Malaz City. Once it was the heart of the Imperial Malazan Empire but in the present day it is little more than a backwater. Not this night! The night of the Shadow Moon. A night where worlds and realms converge. Also a night that will see the prophesied Return. Many expect the long absent Emperor Kellenved to return for his throne. Surly, the Imperial Regent, means to see that never occurs. Theirs is not the only battle that will take place on this night of magic as a Convergence draws in all sorts of powerful creatures to the city.
The story was mainly told from the POV of two new characters. Kiska, a young would be spy who is determined to prove she deserves a place in the Imperial Army. Temper, a world weary war veteran. Once Temper served under the First Sword, but now he is keeping his head down and just trying to escape the notice of the Claw. We got a few others POV's and all served to give the story more depth.
I liked the story. It really did have the feel of Malazan story even if it did lack the witty dialogue that makes reading Erikson's books so much fun. I liked both Kiska and Temper. They were complete opposites but both were likeable and easy to root for. It was great to get a glimpse of the moment that Surly became Empress Laseen and to see both Dancer and Kellenved spin their own plots and seize another sort of power.
We got to meet the usual cool assortment of memorable human and non-human characters and I'm hoping we meet some again!
This was a good story that fell only slightly short of being as good as Erikson's own contributions to the Malazan world. All in all I was happy and impressed by Esselmont's first book and look forward to reading more of his books with the knowledge that he is a capable contributor to this great series.
Audio Note: This was narrated by Jonathan Banks. He had large boots to fill as I think both Page and Lister were excellent in narrating Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen, but I thought he did a decent job with the audio of this one.
