    Thrilling!
The beginning of this book starts off a bit slow with characters being introduced as is sometimes necessary to fully develop a good base, but by the end of the first chapter all the kinks are ironed out and fully settled into this tale. If I had been reading the book, it would have been difficult not to skip ahead. It tale is very exciting and haunting. Can't hardly wait to read another by K.N. Lee!

If there's one thing Mare Barrow knows, it's that she's different.
Mare's blood is red - the colour of common folk - but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control.
The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from the prince and friend who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind.
Pursued by the Silver king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red and Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors.
But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat. Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?

X-Men: First Class + Grisha Trilogy = Glass Sword
What other book might you compare Glass Sword to and why?
Glass Sword seems to me like a mix of the movie "X-men: First Class" and Leigh Bardugo's Grisha Trilogy (Especially the 2nd book - Siege and Storm). Thus expect this book to have an equivalent to a recruitment and training montage and for the main character to be the sort-of leader of a group of super-powered individuals
Not to mention Mare is showing shades of Grisha Trilogy's Alina Starkov
    Any additional comments?
I don't think Glass Sword is as good as the first book: Red Queen. But maybe that's just me. I certainly prefer the first book for it's deception and political intrigue within the palace. The second book shows Mare outside the palace. But I feel that the way the book handles Mare fighting back has certainly been done before (ie it's basically a mix of Alina Starkov readying the Grisha to fight the Darkling and Katniss Everdeen allowing her image to be used to fuel a rebellion). So I'm not particularly impressed with the majority of the book. This is not to say it was a bad book.
I think it's ok. There's certainly a lot of action going on in this book as Mare and her friends are being hunted by the King and finding ways to fight back.
However, none of the new characters introduced appealed to me. A lot of them are side characters and are kind of cardboard cut-outs of characters I've read before. Or maybe it's just because the whole book is from Mare's POV and Mare (unfortunately) intentionally And unintentionally never really let herself get close enough to know them better?
In any case, you might wonder why I even gave this book a 4 star rating.
    Simple: MAVEN
This book could certainly have been better with a lot more MAVEN in my opinion. Not to say that I want Maven to win. Just saying that the plot only really picks up when Maven makes an actual appearance (however scant it is in this book).
Mare and Maven's twisted bond is a guilty pleasure of mine. I went into Glass Sword expecting to read on the aftermath of Maven's betrayal. And with regards to Mare and Maven, it did not disappoint me. And this is the main reason I'm looking forward to the third book
    So to summarize:
Don't expect a lot of appearances from Maven.

    Great Narration
Not the best story, but kept my attention and the narration is completely worth it.
    Are you an Unusual?
Would you listen to The Secrets of the Drearcliff Grange School again? Why?
No - though I've thoroughly enjoyed I would likely not need to listen again.
What did you like best about this story?
LOVE the narrator's voice and compelling characterizations! Pure magic, as intended for the story.
Which character as performed by Joan Walker was your favorite?
I did not single one out. Outstanding distinctions between a multitude of characters. You know the character speaking based on inflection and nuances.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No - I really enjoyed it but no extreme reaction.
    Any additional comments?
Ok, the story is so amazingly detailed it takes keen attention to follow the various characters and their interactions. I see that as a positive, as opposed to some Dickensonian drudgery.
I especially liked the talents of various unusuals. Instead of clubbing the reader over the head with obvious distinctions, talents and peculiarities are malleable and diffuse. Clever structuring for the story which encourages the imagination to wander.
Spiffing school story via Lovecraft & the X-Men
I enjoyed this immensely and don't care that technically it's meant to be YA. Amy's alienation at joining a new school late and the casual tortures - physical and psychogical - that girls inflict on each other as she tries to fit in is convincing. She soon discovers that she, like some of the other pupils, is an "unusual" with odd powers that she must explore and master. In this universe unusual powers are acknowledged and, in a few cases, celebrated but there are dark plots afoot.
I do appreciate the gung ho adventurous spirit of the girls of Drearcliff and their distinctly odd teachers. The girls do not hesitate in setting off to rescue a friend held captive by masked criminals, or stop another girl having her face cut off, or launch violent physical attacks on any other rotters including dastardly prefects.
It's not quite as jam-packed full of cultural references as Kim Newman's other books but there's enough to enjoy spotting.

    another great Pathfinder tale
like most paizo published books this was outstanding with Vivid story and detail I recommend this to any Pathfinder fan
A well performed boring story is still boring.
What disappointed you about The Wizard's Mask?
The biggest problem with the wizards mask was the Poor pacing of the story. Ttaking till almost A quarter of the way into the story before starting the actual plot . Also The constantly repeating Chase sequences almost had be skipping ahead to see if there was an actual plot
What could Ed Greenwood have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
While introducing the characters is extremely important it could've been done in a more creative way then having them constantly chased by random different groups repeatedly throughout the first quarter of the novel.
What does Fleet Cooper bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
While the story itself was doll in unengaging the performance of the story was actually quite good the narrator managed to produce a unique character in each of the other wise uninteresting protagonists
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Really the only redeeming quality of this book would have to be the decent performance of the narrator

    Good story about atutomatons
    SPOILER FREE REVIEW
"Blood of the City" is a tense, action filled adventure involving intrigue, friendhip, death and tragedy. It is actualy very good as a thriller, which is what I'd expect out of a Pathfinder Novel, the fights are described expertly (nearly as good as in Death's Heratic), the story is unpredictable in a good way, and in it I probably found the best, most plausible translation of game mechanics into a story from any of the Pathfinder Tales line (admittadly i didn't get around to reading many of them yet).
To sum up, "Blood of the City" is actualy a very enjoyable story and I read the last 1/3 of it in one tension filled sitting. It's oh so regretable that it's a story about atuomatons, not people.
The book has not emotional hook whatsoever. None of the characters seems to react as a human would, to anything. The main character is as emotionaly dead as the white stone from which Magnimar is built. While she experiences major changes and revelations in the book, we get no emotional response from her - her inner world, the way she experiences things and feels them, is hidden from the reader. The book feels more like a dry recounting of events than an actual story. Kind of like how a history teacher sounds when lecturing about world war 2 - it's supposed to be a grand story about the largest war the world has ever seen, but you don't experience it that way. Her companions are all not very well rounded characters and we only get to see very rare, short glimpses to their personalities.
To be fair, the book actualy address the issue - many characters call out the POV, Luma Derahxi, for being very guarded with her emotions. At one point a character even complains that Luma was "able to give an accurate description of a room and eveything that was in it... but of how the terrible things that happened in the room effected her, she gave no hint..." That's fine by me as a character trait, but why can't the reader learn about the inner world of the character?
Maybe Author Robin D Laws knows exactly what he is doing and it's all a descision he's made to help portray the character - if so, it's an impressive echievment, and from what little he's shown of character development I actual think he can do it very well, except that he maybe finds it not very interesting. The end result, unfourtanatley, is that my enjoyment of the book was decreased dramaticaly, which is a real shame because the book had such great potential.
Will I recommend this book? No, I have to say I wouldn't.

nice addition to the pathfinder series
i was pleasantly surprised to enjoy this book so much. it starts off with a bang and continues throughout. it has a nice dungeon crawl and assorted foes to deal with it. a great light escapist fare that does not disappoint. i found it very captivating and hard to put down. a nice read to pick up in the afternoon and enjoy.
    Five Stars
    Perfect read !
    Three Stars
    just okay.
A tale of betrayal and revenge
Kagur barely survived the bloody betrayal of her adopted brother Eovath: he murdered her entire clan, supposedly in the service of a dark god. Now she is out to avenge their murders. With the aid of Holg, a shaman from a different clan who healed her after Eovath nearly killed her, Kagur follows Eovath's trail into the Darklands, to the rumor of a place where the sun shines in the deep and where Eovath is gathering an army to wipe out the remaining humans of the region. Through the long, perilous journey and the danger that waits at the end, Kagur's fury and hatred is all she has to fuel her, but is it enough? Will she get the revenge she desires?
Richard Lee Byers has added an excellent new story to the âPathfinder Talesâ library. âCalled to Darknessâ is a good-old fashioned tale of revenge, and fans of the Pathfinder RPG and general fantasy alike will enjoy it. The story is well-written, the characters surprisingly detailed for such a relatively short novel, and the world fascinating and easy to immerse oneself in, even for readers who know nothing about the Pathfinder RPG and who have not read previous stories from this series.

Down the Rabbit Hole... If Rovagug was a Cute Fluffy Rabbit
I'm not quite sure how I feel about this one, while on one hand I enjoyed the adventure and plot of revenge and all the strange and wonderful sights gleamed within it just never snapped me up. As the story goes on various parts and travels seem to lurch up or slog down hapharzardly. This seems to straighten out as it nears the end which has an excellent lead up and plays out wonderfully... For a point, then the ending just sort of happens more or less. Also while not a bad ending its not one I really cared for. I feel at odds that my favourite parts of the book are when the characters are dreamimg, from there they are more alive and more interesting than in all of the rest of the book combined.

    Ugh
So simplistic about a teenager could have been written by someone in grade school I was always hoping it would get better it didnt
    Teen Rambo
This is the 4th installment of this series that I haven't finished yet. I won't listen to a 5th.
The story is filled with "slap my own back" accolades about how much he is a natural born killer at the ripe young age of 16. The self promotion of how deadly he is has even gained him the respect of a full bird Colonel, who gave him a Humvee as a token of his high esteem for killing 16 bad guys single handed with a knife, rock, and grenades.
I'm no psychologist, but this author has found his forum to indulge his fantasy as being a teenage Rambo. Probably because he doesn't possess these SOG skills except while playing a video game.
Why would trained military personnel, including his father, seek advise on strategy and tactics from a teenager who is barely of legal age to drive? Anyway, I digress.
The narrator delivers an excellent performance. One salvation to this book.
...and can someone tell me if "curiouser" is even a word? I tried to look it up, but maybe my dictionary app needs to be updated.

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
For readers of George Saunders, Kelly Link, David Mitchell, and Karen Russell, This Census-Taker is a stunning, uncanny, and profoundly moving novella from multiple-award-winning and best-selling author China Miéville.
In a remote house on a hilltop, a lonely boy witnesses a profoundly traumatic event. He tries - and fails - to flee. Left alone with his increasingly deranged parent, he dreams of safety, of joining the other children in the town below, of escape.
When at last a stranger knocks at his door, the boy senses that his days of isolation might be over.
But by what authority does this man keep the meticulous records he carries? What is the purpose behind his questions? Is he friend? Enemy? Or something else altogether?
Filled with beauty, terror, and strangeness, This Census-Taker is a poignant and riveting exploration of memory and identity.
    Critic Reviews:
"A thought-provoking fairy tale for adults.... [This Census-Taker] resembles the narrative style, quirkiness, and plotting found in the works of Karen Russell, Aimee Bender, or Steven Millhauser." (Booklist)
"Brief and dreamlike...a deceptively simple story whose plot could be taken as a symbolic representation of an aspect of humanity as big as an entire society and as small as a single soul." (Kirkus Reviews)

    Absorbing fog-wrapped dark fairytale
I listened to this twice, because I loved my first listen so much that I wanted to experience more of the atmosphere. I also wondered if I could find any more definitive answers regarding the questions raised. I could not. I did find much more clarity, piecing together bits and possibilities. It was a wonderfully unnerving puzzle to pick back through. There is an astonishing clarity regarding the world this story is set in, even as it resolutely sticks to its mysteriousness. That's part of the joy of reading this. Certainly a story that begs a second or third reading soon after listening to its last words. It's one of those books that loves being obscure and avoids easy answers, and yet is fully worth the extra time to let the story seep in further.
There are a number of darkly fantastical aspects to the narrator's childhood and figuring out exactly what they all mean for the narrator then and now is a big part of the pull of the narrative. From the start it's made very clear that we cannot trust the narrator, as there is confusion over the events in an innocent but haunting manner. It was well-wrought mix of the gothic and magical realism.
The point-of-view of This Census-Taker actually reminded me of the beginning third of Embassytown (Mieville's best in my opinion), in that Avice, the narrator in Embassytown, also felt innocent and confused and untrustworthy. However, there is certainly much more clarity that is revealed toward the end of Embassytown. This Census-Taker doesn't do that end reveal stuff. There's a reveal, sure, but it only presents further questions.
So yeah, if you need answers and trustworthy narrators, this is probably not for you.. If you love fathomless questions and mystery, give this two listens or more.
The narration for the audio was an excellent match.
    No Definite Answer
In the latest short story by China Miéville, "This Census-Taker", you are not really sure if the boy is telling the truth or embellishing his story for attention.

    Publisher's Summary:
Eleanor and Esmerelda are identical twins with a secret language all their own, inseparable until a terrible accident claims Esme's life. Eleanor's family is left in tatters: Her mother retreats inward, seeking comfort in bottles; her father reluctantly abandons ship. Eleanor is forced to grow up more quickly than a child should and becomes the target of her mother's growing rage.
Years pass, and Eleanor's painful reality begins to unravel in strange ways. The first time it happens, she walks through a school doorway and finds herself in a cornfield, beneath wide blue skies. When she stumbles back into her own world, time has flown by without her. Again and again, against her will, she falls out of her world and into other, stranger ones, leaving behind empty rooms and worried loved ones.
One fateful day, Eleanor leaps from a cliff and is torn from her world altogether. She meets a mysterious stranger, Mea, who reveals to Eleanor the weight of her family's loss. To save her broken parents and rescue herself, Eleanor must learn how deep the well of her mother's grief and her father's heartbreak truly goes. Esmerelda's death was not the only tragic loss in her family's fragmented history, and unless Eleanor can master her strange new abilities, it may not be the last.
    Critic Reviews:
"Eleanor is deep - a really poignant, moving story that will surprise you with how smart it is. The novel turns a traditional tragic narrative on its head with compelling elements of science fiction and fantasy. It's a touching story that sneaks up on you, working on multiple levels that pay off in a series of emotional uppercuts in the final pages. Read it and weep." (Daniel H. Wilson, best-selling author of Robopocalypse)
"Jason Gurley will be a household name one day." (Hugh Howey, New York Times best-selling author of Wool)

    Quite an adventure
What made the experience of listening to Treason the most enjoyable?
The story was quite an adventure. You never knew who you could trust and who would stab you in the back, definitely kept you guessing. The narrator had such a smooth and expressive voice. How she made all the different voices distinctive, was quite expressive.
What other book might you compare Treason to and why?
I would compare the Grimoire Saga with the Harry Potter series. So many different creatures and magic, with a young one being trained in all their power. With an evil force after him.
    Any additional comments?
This was an excellent series, with so many twists and turns that kept you guessing until the end. The surprises were unending. With a great narrator and amazing story was really enjoyable to experience.
Can't wait for the next book.
This is a truly enjoyable story. Complex, yet easy to follow with rich characters. The voice narration is astounding with so many rich accents. Kudos to Kara Kovacich Stewart. Never have I enjoyed narration so much. I highly recommend this audio book.
    Review: Treason, by S.M. Boyce
I dont think Ive had as great of a reaction to any book as I have this one; well not since I read Lichgates. S.M. Boyce comes back with book two of the Grimoire saga, and comes back STRONG! I honestly didnt think Lichgates could be topped on my all-time favorites list. Treason surpassed it with flying colors.
For those readers who have read Lichgates already, they know how talented Boyce is in creating the world of Ourea. For those who dont know, let me tell you. Boyces world-building skills havent diminished since book one. They may even have gotten better. Ourea, all of its kingdoms, hidden nooks and crannies, the glimpses of the real world that the reader gets, they all show such beauty while having constant danger everywhere. Ourea is a dangerous place. It goes with the territory. Despite the danger its a place Id love to visit if it were to be real.
What I also enjoyed were the new characters in Treason. All the old favorites from Lichgates are back as well, dont worry about missing them. They come back even better this time! The complexities of all S.M.s characters allow for plot twists, extensive and unfolding histories, hope and fear for the future. Each character has an agenda and each character influences others whether they know it or not.
Its this complex world and character system that makes Treason, and The Grimoire Saga in general, what it really is. Its an epic movie unfolding before the readers eyes. I dont know if I was really reading the words on a page, as much as I was watching vivid images play in my head. I couldnt not turn the page even when a chapter was over.
