Immigrants on a sad search for the American dream
This Kindle First selection for September has the advantage of being placed in the right category. It is correctly labeled as literary suspense, which lets readers know that they can expect a character driven theme that provides an insightful look into the human condition. The style of Hot Sur met my expectation but the power and quality of the writing was a surprise and I have just spent three days immersed in the lives and subculture of fascinating characters.
This tale is told from the point of view of a writer pulling information together for a book. The source material comes from interviews with one character, a manuscript by another and a notebook from a third. The tale is detailed and complex but the author manages to keep it flowing and to hold the readerâs attention by creating characters and situations that ring true.
There is mystery, suspense and horror in this tale but it is the slow unfolding of the story with anecdotal digressions that gives depth to the characters. The story centers around Maria Paz, whose mother leaves Colombia and her daughters to go ahead and find a better life for them in American. Her daughters follow and the readers get to see the difficulties of poor immigrants compounded by their illegal status and fear of authorities and deportation. It is a timely topic and presented very well. There are many layers to the story including religious fanaticism and the resulting mayhem caused by it. It is not an easy book to put down until one reaches the satisfying conclusion.
    Quality literature from Kindle First
Hot Sur is a superbly crafted novel with a complex plot, rich, fascinating characters and a thought-provoking view of life in America.I don't write many reviews but feel compelled to review this book because it has received a number of poor reviews. If you are going to read this book, and I highly recommend that you do, then do not expect a light weight, mindless quick read. Expect instead to be taken on a journey through the minds of several characters, to see life as they see it, to feel what they are feeling. The story will unfold slowly through many pages that describe the details of their lives.
There will be readers who find that this book is beyond their level of reading comprehension, or is not the quick entertainment they want. I would hope that those readers would realize that their disappointment is not due to any fault of the book.

    Simple and Fast
The story moves quickly in part because of the superficial detail. It is like reading or listening to an abridged version. Or like watching a TV crime drama where everything can happen, characters introduced, crime committed and solved in one quick hour. There is minimal character development but enough to get a feel, very limited descriptions of battles, weapons and plot. This isnt necessarily a bad thing but if you like richness of character, depth of plot and more descriptions of location and action this isnt for you. There is also a silliness or lightness in the story lines with characters like Merle and Earl. At times there involvement almost reminds me of Janet Evanovichs Stephanie Plum series. Only unlike Evanovich's stories there is lots of killing and blood. This is nothing like Tom Woods Victor series or John Milton by Mark Dawson. I only gave it 3 stars because of the simplicity and lack of depth for the genre. It is not a bad book just not a great book. It doesn't leave me running to read or listen to the next book in the series.

    Fails to deliver
    Any additional comments?
I return very few books but this is one of them. Good title and premise but that's it. Writing is repetitious and infomercial like: wait, there is more! I never felt a connection with any of the characters and didn't care what happened to them. Reader did the best he could with the story he was given. In a way it also assumes the reader is a bit dull - too much explanation.
    Fitzek does it again!
I buy anything Fitzek writes sight unseen because he is that good. You will not be disappointed, and you won't see it coming either.
    FITZEK IS BRILLIANT!
    Any additional comments?
Tick, Tock, Tick, Tock......Time is running out for Zorbach. He is on the hunt for the eye collector who has brought him into his sick game of kidnapping and murder.
Zorbach, doesn't know what hit him. He is all of the sudden the prime suspect in a kidnapping case. He gets a visit from a blind lady who seems to see the past. Little does he know that she has also been brought into this bizarre game of hide and seek.
This book starts at the end, and works it's way to the beginning. It was a very interesting concept. I have really enjoyed Fitzek's writing. Fitzek only has a few that have been translated into English, but they have all been very good.
There is a lot going on in this story, and it kept me on the end of my seat the whole time. I know I say this all the time, but I was sure who the "murderer" was the whole time.....I am happy to say I was wrong... I was surprised. I did not see the end coming the way it did.
If you like creepy, exciting, edge of your seat books, you will enjoy this one. Fitzek is an awesome author. His writing is beautiful, and the narrator makes the story really come to life.

Summer 1978. A young boy disappears without a trace from a summer cabin. His mother claims he was carried away by a giant. He is never found.
Twenty-five years later, another child goes missing. This time there's a lead: a single photograph taken by Susso Myrén. Myrén has devoted her life to the search for trolls, legendary giants known as stallo, who can control human thoughts and assume animal form. Convinced that trolls are real, she follows the trail of missing children to Northern Sweden. But humans, some part stallo themselves, have been watching over the creatures for generations, and this hidden society of protectors won't hesitate to close its deadly ranks.
Mixing folklore and history, suspense and the supernatural, The Shapeshifters is an extraordinary journey into a frozen land where myth bleeds into reality.

    Pages don't connect?
The book is incredibly promising. I have yet to finish it, and I'm sure I'll end up giving it a higher rating. But I'm having some trouble getting through it as I believe the copy I receive may have been misprinted, perhaps?
The sentences do not line up from page to page. Initially, I thought this could have been just a piece of his writing style, but it's at the point now where the story isn't making sense. Every page reads as if I randomly opened the book, and I feel like I'm missing a few sentences inbetween.
I began reading this first at Barnes and noble, and then ordered it offline. I didn't get very far in-store, however I did not encounter this problem then. This all leads me to believe I've received a copy that was printed incorrectly. If I'm wrong and it is just a creative decision please let me know. I've been researching trying to find someone with the same problem, but I've yet to come across it.
Other than that, I would definitely recommend trying the book out. The writing is fresh and the fantasy is something I'd never heard of before. Im looking forward to figuring this problem out.
Shapeshifters and Stallo are the same book
Do stallo (trolls) exist? A picture taken by her grandfather has led Susso to ask this question and set up a website asking for proof of their existence. The disappearance of a little boy and the picture of a strange little man near his grandmotherâs house may lead her to answers, but also leads to danger for her and her family.
Youâre not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but when I saw the cover of this book in a Bergen, Norway bookshop, I wanted to find out what it was about. When I finally was able to get an English language version from the U.K., I was not disappointed. The motivation of some of the characters was not that clear, but overall I enjoyed this book.
order this in a used edition like I did and save yourself some money
although translated from original language this is a well plotted..strange..and very different mystery-fantasy-horror novel.Fully developed structure wise this is an entertaining read..order this in a used edition like I did and save yourself some money..this makes the experience even better!
    Creepy, atmospheric horror story
Stefan Spjut's SHAPESHIFTERS is a creepy, atmospheric horror novel about Nordic mythological creatures in modern-day Sweden. In 1978, a little boy is carried off from a campground by something gigantic, but no one will believe his mother's story.

    Awful awful accents
Would you try another book written by Christopher Brookmyre or narrated by Angus King?
I LOVE Chris Brookmyre's books. The problem with this is entirely with the narration. I'm afraid Mr King's attempt at a Geordie and a Mackem accent were so appallingly bad that I literally had to stop listening as it was killing the enjoyment. I'm not from the North-East btw, it's just that the performance is so jarringly awful on those accents it really becomes impossible to ignore about 2/3rds of the way through when those characters are really at the forefront. I personally blame the director, should never have let a performance that bad be released. He's fine on other accents and I'm sure he's a capable actor but wow, awful performance on those accents.
Would you be willing to try another one of Angus Kings performances?
    No.
    Any additional comments?
Chris Brookmyre is absolutely wonderful and I have recommended him to loads of friends who are now fans.
A fantastic book - let down by Ausible
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Great story, well engineered, keeps you
    reading
Who was your favorite character and why?
Has to be Ally, although Mtt and Simone + Vale are worthy of a mention
Have you listened to any of Angus Kings other performances? How does this one compare?
He reads well. Its not the voice that I thought of when I read the books, but he adds to my pleasure - an alternative view
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    Laugh
    Any additional comments?
Audible have lost the last section of the book - pathetic!
    Cheered my day.
Came late to this early Chris Brookmyre as the blurb had made me think it wouldn't suit me. Then I was totally riveted and laughing all through. Angus King is overall a great narrator and I forgive his dreadful Sunderland efforts here as his varied native Scottish for the main characters is so much more important.
    different!
imaginative storyline for sure. love Angus King's narration. enjoyed the different characters. Anorher good listen!
great story, just a little bit dated now perhaps?
loved this when it was released and its still a cracking read but i just find some of the tech references at focussed on and subsequently date it badly, perhaps an updated version could be considered?

    http://tbbmaniacs.wixsite.com/reviews/single-post/2017/02/17/Red-Tide-WriterPeg-Brantley-Narrator-Suzan-Lynn-Lorraine
This book ticked all of my boxes including the HEA. The characters are easy to relate to and the story moves at a reasonable pace, keeping the reader guessing.
I am a fan of books with short chapters as it encourages the author to keep the story moving and this one does not disappoint. The characters are well-developed, with each having some of their back-story explained, helping the reader to relate more fully to them. As this is the first in the Aspen Thriller series, I am hoping that some of these characters will appear in future novels as it will be interesting to see how their lives progress. Because I love dogs, Im always glad to find an author who includes them in their stories. The three who form an integral part of this story, do not disappoint! I do have one question for the author how does the plane crash fit in? It seems to have no relevance to this story. As an optimist, I hope there will be a link in a future book; however, this loose end needs to be tied.
I listened to the audio version of this book narrated by Suzan Lynn Lorraine. It was refreshing to hear a book narrated (read without using different voices) rather than performed, however, the lack of character definition does rate a lower score from me.
If you are looking for a mystery / thriller for a lazy Sunday afternoon, this book is for you.

    Outstanding...but
Red Tide kept me guessing until the very end. This was a wonderful story with true characters intrigue and real-life emotions. The first book by Peg Brantley I read was The Sacrifice. Red Tide is just as riveting. My only and I do mean only complaint about this book is that the ending is too abrupt. I like the circumstances revealed in the ending but so much more could have been said and revealed about how that ending came about. In my humble opinion too much was left unsaid between the end of the conflict and the final resolution. Other than that it's an amazing book that I will definitely recommend and read again.

    Publisher's Summary:
From the winner of the Lucy Cavendish Fiction Prize, a brilliantly haunting and suspenseful debut set in modern-day Britain where water is running out everywhere except at The Well - the farm of one seemingly ordinary family whose mysterious good fortune leads to suspicion, chaos, and ultimately a shocking act of violence.
Ruth Ardingly has just been released from prison to serve out a sentence of house arrest for arson and suspected murder at her farm, The Well. Beyond its borders, some people whisper she is a witch; others a messiah. For as soon as Ruth returns to The Well, rain begins to fall on the farm. And it has not rained anywhere else in the country in over three years.
Ruth and her husband, Mark, had moved years before from London to this ancient idyll in the hopes of starting their lives over. But then the drought began, and as the surrounding land dried up and died, and The Well grew lush and full of life, they came to see their fortune would come at a price. From the envy of their neighbors to the mandates of the government, from the fanaticism of a religious order called the Sisters of the Rose to the everyday difficulties of staying close as husband and wife, mother and child - all these forces led to a horrifying crime: the death of their seven-year-old grandson, drowned with cruel irony in one of the few ponds left in the countryside.
Now back at The Well, Ruth must piece together the tragedy that shattered her marriage, her family, and her dream. For she believes her grandson's death was no accident, and that the murderer is among the people she trusted most. Alone except for her guards on a tiny green jewel in a world rapidly turning to dust, Ruth begins to confront her worst fears and learns what really happened in the dark heart of The Well.

    F this book!
I was pretty into the description of the book and was expecting something like Children of Men and in some ways the tone and mood are similar; a bleak near future where environmental catastrophe is creating civil unrest.
However, I am SICK to death of books where the protagonist (usually female) is supposedly very intelligent but lacks anything like the ability to recognize what's going on around them.
I understand characters are flawed and making mistakes is part of what creates tension in a narrative but seriously, everything this character does defies logic. She doesn't just get everything wrong, she seems completely baffled by life. She says variations of, "I don't know," or "I don't understand," so many times that eventually, as a reader, I found myself thinking "No, duh!"
Very disappointing. Instead of listening to this book, watch Top of the Lake on Netflix.
Brilliant, poetic, tragic. Life-affirming indomitable spirits
This book so unexpected. The rare kind of book that haunts. So human. So tragic. Lush in its validation of life, even when the spirit becomes dry, brittle, and oh so frail.Yet from the well, hope springs eternal.
The story is so very original. Nuanced. The prose often times poetic.
The performance is nothing short of stunning. Nicola breathes life into these beautiful words.
    Kept me on my toes!
Psychological thriller? Yes Exploring human relationships? yes. This book has these things rolled up with descriptions of the English Countryside and bungling governments.
