    Title: Focus
Subtitle: Elevating the Essentials to Radically Improve Student Learning
    Author: Mike Schmoker
    Narrator: Christopher Prince
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 4 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-20-12
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 44 votes
    Genres: Business, Career Skills
    Publisher's Summary:
Best-selling author Mike Schmoker describes a plan for radically improving student learning that is built on three core elements: a focused and coherent curriculum (what we teach); clear, prioritized lessons (how we teach); and purposeful reading and writing, or authentic literacy.
With this "less is more" philosophy, educators can help students learn content at a deeper level, develop greater critical thinking skills, and discover more clearly how content-area concepts affect their lives and the world around them.
Both a call to action and a blueprint for creating more effective classrooms, Focus: Elevating the Essentials for Radically Improved Student Learning will challenge your assumptions about schooling and show how educators who have embraced this approach quickly achieved spectacular results.
The book is published by ASCD.
Mike Schmoker is a former administrator, English teacher, and football coach. He has written four books and dozens of articles for educational journals, newspapers, and Time magazine.

    Good sound education philosophy
There is nothing new here. It is proposing that we go back to good, old-fashioned teaching the content without all of the bells and whistles. Teach fewer topics to mastery rather than covering everything. Save your money because there aren't many suggestions as to how to do this with Common Core.
    Less is More
A concise and easy to read book about implementing a few high impact strategies that can support learning for all students. This was refreshing because it feels as though educators are pulled in too many directions. The book may feel repetitious to some (the author admits this) because the few, high impact strategies are repeated often in each chapter. However, this helped reinforce Schmoker's points. Some schools and districts are poised to implement the ideas in the book. Others will need culture building and professional development.

I purchased this book as a way to prepare for the upcoming school year. As I read the book, I was able to pull out information and ideas to implement in my classroom. I highly recommend this book to teachers who are looking to make a difference in their classrooms.
this is one of the best books I have read
As a teacher, this is one of the best books I have read. It gets to the heart of what true learning is all about.
    Authentic Literacy
This book confirmed what I already believe in that authentic literacy is the critical missing link in curriculum in our schools across the country.

    A Must Read
What did you love best about Speaking As a Leader?
This book is packed full of practical and inspirational tips to help us speak as leaders. While many tips are so simple they are almost "common sense", it is the how the book is arranged, that walks you through the process of speaking as a strong leader. I have my entire executive team reading this book!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Speaking As a Leader?
Leaders speak to inspire not to inform
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    yes!!!
    Sorry to say
The message is to speak clearly. The narrator is slurring. I should have read this book instead.
    Great info & tips
Did not like the narrator, she enunciated so much that she sounded like a robot. It was distracting at times but the information was great.
    Not just for CEOs
If you feel like a leader but your peers do not have the same perception this book helps you convey your inner leadership. Just remember it's not nearly as effective if your peers do not know it. Inspire them into believing! CEOs or management need not to be overly confident and unteachable. No such thing as too humble to better yourself. Grab this book and run with it!
The narrator's voice is good but raspy, but the messages delivered are great.

At one point or another in this book, you will experience several different reactions - excitement, curiosity, joy, laughter, or even tears - but the ultimate goal is to encourage and challenge you to make a decision to do the impossible. Author/Reader Needs to slow down
I love listening to Bet-David talk, he's extremely enthusiastic and motivating. I was hoping he would be the one reading the book, then I realized why there are readers/speakers who specialize in audible books. Not trying to hate on the man, but he needs to know when to pause, slow down, and take a breath to allow the listener to comprehend and follow him. Especially on the action points. Great advice, extremely motivating and talented man, didn't do the book justice by burning through it like that. Then again, I guess I could not be lazy and read it myself! Thanks for helping us grow!
    Glad I bought this book!
Very well written and narrated! Clear and motivating instructions for going out and accomplishing your dreams!
    Success and what drives it

Title: Respect for Acting, 2nd Edition
    Author: Uta Hagen, Haskel Frankel
    Narrator: Angele Masters
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 58 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-31-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 124 votes
    Genres: Business, Career Skills
    Publisher's Summary:
"I have attempted to break down all the areas in which you can work and search for realities in yourself which serve the character and the play. Put your instincts and sense of truth, your understanding of human realities to use while probing and grappling with the content and the roots of the material. Be specific and real in your actions, and they will communicate your artistic statement. Bring your universal understanding of the present to the present as a real artist." &Uta Hagen
At the invitation of Herbert Berghof, the late Uta Hagen joined the faculty of the HB Studio in 1947. Since then, teaching was always a challenge for her, as well as for the many prominent actors whom shehelped to develop. For many years, she was asked to write a book. Finally she did, and here it is: an account of her own struggle with the techniques of acting and based on her teachings.
The first part, "The Actor", deals with techniques that set an actor in motion physically, verbally, and emotionally. It deals with the actor's concept of himself and with the art of acting, as well as with the ethics that have made the theater what it is today and what it could be tomorrow.
Part Two, "The Object Exercises", offers specific and detailed work for the actor, covering a broad range of his problems.
Part Three, "The Play and the Role", concerns itself with the definition of the play and identification with the character the actor will undertake. It also covers practical problems, the rehearsal, "style", and communication.
Respect for Acting is a book for people who respect (or wish they could) the theater on both sides of the footlights, for actors and audiences who favor truth in a creative process. The constructive stages of work delve into performance as well as into the issues surrounding a necessary change in the theater. It is all quite authentic, since Uta Hagen never hesitated to throw herself into a good fight for a better offering in the theater in "the time of her life."
    Critic Reviews:
"This fascinating and detailed book about acting is Miss Hagen's credo, the accumulated wisdom of her years spent in intimate communion with her art. It is at once the voicing of her exacting standards for herself and those she [taught], and an explanation of the means to the end." (
    Publishers Weekly)
"Hagen adds to the large corpus of titles on acting with vivid dicta drawn from experience, skill, and a sense of personal and professional worth. Her principal asset in this treatment is her truly significant imagination. Her 'object exercises' display a wealth of detail with which to stimulate the student preparing a scene for presentation." (
    Library Journal)
    "Uta Hagen's
Respect for Acting... is a relatively small book.

    Publisher's Summary:
Mornings are a madcap time for many of us. We wake up in a hazeoften after hitting snooze a few times. Then we rush around to get ready and out the door so we can officially start the day. Before we know it, hours have slipped by without us accomplishing anything beyond downing a cup of coffee, dashing off a few emails, and dishing with our coworkers around the water cooler. By the time the workday wraps up, were so exhausted and defeated that any motivation to accomplish something in the evening has vanished.
But according to time management expert Laura Vanderkam, mornings hold the key to taking control of our schedules. If we use them wisely, we can build habits that will allow us to lead happier, more productive lives.
Drawing on real-life anecdotes and scientific research that shows why the early hours of the day are so important, Vanderkam reveals how successful people use mornings to help them accomplish things that are often impossible to take care of later in the day. While many of us are still in bed, these folks are scoring daily victories to improve their health, careers, and personal lives without sacrificing their sanity. For instance, former PepsiCo chairman and CEO Steve Reinemund would rise at 5:00 a.m., run four miles, pray, and eat breakfast with his family before heading to work to run a Fortune 500 company.
What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast is a fun, practical guide that will inspire you to rethink your morning routine and jump-start your life before the day has even begun.

    Members Reviews:
    Stunned
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
You bet! This book has totally changed the way I communicate with others and I feel so much more connected to people. I am deliberately removing the word "no" from my vocabulary and I have chosen the word "calm" as my word. I repeat it over and over at night when I can't sleep sometimes. Just saying the word, spelling it out and repeating it over and over changes my heart beat and changes my thinking.
Have you listened to any of Mark Robert Waldmans other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    The power of "NO."
    Any additional comments?
I just want to know who will use their compassionate listening skills on me. I need to talk sometimes, too.
Mostly the same stuff I've read before
    Any additional comments?
This book could be interesting at times but if you've read other books like this about the brain - it's mainly the same information. What I couldn't believe was the narration! I read reviews about how the narrator's voice was annoying, but I was surprised to find that he almost sounds like he has a speech impediment when he's saying words with the "T" sound. I found that to be annoying and disruptive to listening.
    I can start TODAY!
Simple, doable, inspiring communication strategies I can begin today. I look forward to many meaningful conversations!
    Just Awful
I tried hard to like this book but ultimately found no redeeming value. The advice was sometimes ok, often impractical, and occasionally ridiculous. In a nutshell relax, look into the other persons eyes, and speak slowly. That's about it. Please save yourself respect, career and friendships by not following the more outlandish advice this book offers. Better yet, don't buy it at all.
    Thought provoking
Enjoyed the books concepts. Narrator was good.
Examples helpful. I'm putting the suggestions into actions.

    More than one way- Useful
I found this book to be very helpful, I tend to be at a job for about a year and then I get discouraged by something or someone. I start to look around for some other job, I mean there must be something better out there right? I find a job that promises better pay, better benefits, whatever.
A year later, I'm out looking again.
This book asks great questions about what you like to do, and in different ways than the typical-
"What would you do if you didn't have to go to work?"
kind of questions. So there I was, at my workstation, trying to figure out what i wanted to do with my life. and i looked back on my little scrap of paper and realized-
I am DOING work that I love.
Now, it might not be this job but Mr. Miller makes a great point in separating job, career, and vocation.
He gives great information on how to decide what you enjoy doing, and then how to find a way to
    DO IT.
Whether it is to start your own business, start several "side jobs", or how to land the job at the company that you really want to work for.
    Couple this book with
    Quittter
    by Jon Acuff
    or
    Entreleadership
    by Dave Ramsey
    Decent, Basic Information
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I listened to the entire book. I thought about moving on and not finishing the book, but I wanted to give it a fair listen. It's okay material. Nothing earth shattering. TONS of lists...almost too many and there is no way to remember all of the lists he presents. I am not in the place that most of this book focuses on, but there were some universal principles that I was able to get out of it and apply. If you're looking for a new job, this book is for you.

    Publisher's Summary:
Are you the next Steve Jobs?
You can be as innovative and impactful - if you can change your behaviors to improve your creative impact.
In The Innovators DNA, authors Jeff Dyer, Hal Gregersen, and bestselling author Clayton M. Christensen (The Innovators Dilemma, The Innovators Solution) build on what we know about disruptive innovation to show how individuals can develop the skills necessary to move progressively from idea to impact.
By identifying behaviors of the worlds best innovators - from leaders at Amazon and Apple to those at Google, Skype, and Virgin Group - the authors outline five discovery skills that distinguish innovative entrepreneurs and executives from ordinary managers: Associating, Questioning, Observing, Networking, and Experimenting.
Once you master these competencies (the authors provide a self assessment for rating your own innovators DNA), the authors explain how you can generate ideas, collaborate with colleagues to implement them, and build innovation skills throughout your organization to sharpen its competitive edge. That innovation advantage can translate into a premium in your companys stock price - an innovation premium - that is possible only by building the code for innovation right into your organizations people, processes, and guiding philosophies.
Practical and provocative, The Innovators DNA is an essential resource for individuals and teams who want to strengthen their innovative prowess.

Starts slowly and then... it pops!
If you could sum up The Innovator's DNA in three words, what would they be?
This book analyzes some of the best thinkers of our time and shares strategies and tools to think like them. It won't make you an instant innovator or genius critical thinker but it definitely will add some tools to your toolbox. Give it a listen past the first few chapters-- it starts off a little preachy with motivational garb as if this were a self-help book but it picks up and provides some real gems!
The inner-workings of innovators minds. Nice book!
Where does The Innovator's DNA rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It's in the top tier group of the audiobooks I have listened to.
What did you learn from The Innovator's DNA that you would use in your daily life?
