Climb on Board for More Fun with The Bunnies!

I had such a thrilling romp last year reading the first tale of Mr. and Mrs. Bunny to my son. His grandmother came to town and we read it all over again, so that she could laugh along with us. Believe me--these are great read aloud characters! They are endearingly warm and droll and well-defined. Mr. and Mrs. B. play off of each other like a 1930's screwball comedy team-- loving and yet driving each other crazy throughout. In this book, The Bunnies reappear in their next adventure with their friend, Madeline and her relaxed hippie parents, heading off on a sea voyage to England. My mom and son and I all love the rude, outspoken characters like Mrs. Treaclebunny, and the previous book's Grand Poobah Fox, and the Marmot. They are some of the series' most delicious fun! With all of Polly Horvath's books--bring along your dictionary, as she delights in challenging and elevating your vocabulary. Ultimately, though, it is the heart and loving playfulness of this charming lagomorphic couple that has us pinning our hopes on a third book--for more guarantees of fun. Hope so!

My 12 and 9 year old boys loved the first book of this series. I read it out loud to them and we got lots of laughs from it. This book though did not hold their attention as much and was lacking funny characters. There were still some cute parts, but we were disappointed in the story line.

Great sequel to the adorable book Mr. and Mrs. Bunny, Detectives Extraordinaire. I read the first one to my daughter and we BOTH loved it. It's fun and cute with bunnies etc, but also sophisticated enough to keep you interested. Lots of humor, but a great story too.

Wonderful book

This has become one my favorite books for children. Daydreamer's are often called to task when they have drifted somewhere else, but how many people ever think about what their thinking about or what might be happening in the child's life. Love this story and how it was resolved into creative healthy positive situation. Writers and dreamers are beautiful when they haven't been squashed. Beautiful.

This book is good for students who struggle with either a recent divorce

The book Words With Wings by Nikki Grimes, is about a girl named Gabriella and how she copes with her parents divorce by daydreaming. Through the trials of being in all new environments, she finds comfort and reinsurance in a teacher who encourages her in new ways to express her creativity. This book is good for students who struggle with either a recent divorce, or trouble staying on task in school. Due to the fact that the book is written in small poems, the reader may feel this is an easy read. Although this book was very enjoyable, we feel there could have been more depth and clarity.

This is a realistic fiction novel written in verse about a girl named Gabriella who day dreams. In a little over 80 pages, the author captures Gabriellaâs feelings and worries throughout the book, along with who does and doesn't support her through school and in her home life. This book encourages children to use their creativity and not let others hinder their self-expression. While this story's age range is from 8-11, I would recommend a teacher or family member reading alongside to explain some of the deeper meanings expressed in this book. If you enjoy poetry or reading about children learning life's lessons, this book is for you.

Lots of Important and Surprising Information Given

A must read in this series with lots of shocking information about the TimeRiders and their purpose in their job of correcting time.

This is the one fans have been waiting for!

Fans of the Time Riders series have surely dying learn the secrets of the Time Riders origins and The Shadow City finally gives us a detailed story about the mysterious agency.

Unfortunately, I was spoiled on some of the big reveals in this entry but this entry was still incredibly enjoyable and even a little shocking. If youve been bugged by some logic or continuity errors in the books so far, or have been irritated by some dropped threads and unexplained phenomena this is the book for you!

Told in large portions of external POVs that jump throughout the timeline of the whole series to date we finally get some answers and some unexpected twists.

After reading City of Shadows Ill think youll be as torn as me about whether to go back and re-read the earlier books with this new perspective or charge onto the remaining two books, eager to see how the changed Time Riders face their new roles!

This book deviates from previous stories because it doesnt seem to have a major historical/time contamination plot at the core of the story. For a majority of the book we are dealing with the origins of, and changes in, the Time Riders. As a fan I was thrilled by this alone.

Then just when I least expected it, another ingenious domino set of events was triggered that would forever change the future of humanity!

So on top of the major fan-service we still got a clever time-travel conundrum for our heroes to wade into. It was only a short portion of the book but still clever and fun in the trademark Scarrow way.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough for fans and Im so excited to see where the books go after this game changer!

Really rally enjoyed it, as the others before.

Will be sorry to finish them as I enjoy the wow did not see that coming.

One big technical error.

The Edison system used at the Holborn arches was a DC supply. I cannot see that working with all their AC driven computers etc! I am nitpicking though...Great fun as usual.

Adorable, Funny, with Such Loveable Characters

Such an adorable story of friendship, love, changes. I wanted so badly for this to last another 100 pages, but it's such a quick and cute read that i really can't complain!

Top notch kids book

I loved "Gone, gone, gone" by this writer, so when I saw that her new novel contains another gay teenager I did not hesitate to purchase it. Unfortunately I did not get into the story on my first try and had to put it away for a month or so. This was absolutely not the book's fault though - I just did not expect how very young her characters sounded - much younger than the characters even in "Gone, gone, gone". And this was a good thing - because thirteen year old boys sound as I would think thirteen year olds (or close to that age) should sound. I just had to remind myself that I should be much more forgiving to those characters than I would be to the older teens or adults and after first twenty or thirty pages I could not put the book down.

Steven and Marco were best friends since they were kids and their favorite hobby in school was investigating and staging heists. As you can see from the blurb their newest project is to get to senior prom, because Marco gathered all his courage and wanted to confess his love for Benji on whom he was crushing for three years. The whole book takes place in three or four days, but it was so intense that I learned a lot about these two boys. I was so very impressed how the writer managed to give them some very real flaws and still make them so very likeable to me. Actually, I am probably in the minority on this one, because I have read the reviews on this one (another book I did not originally purchased with intention of reviewing) and a lot of reviewers seem not to like Marco. Some reviewers felt he was too controlling, whiney, self-absorbed. And my only response is "he is thirteen". He is thirteen, he had horrible headaches since he was very young, he was brave enough to come out as gay when he was twelve, he was not having the best time ever since he did come out as gay from some annoying bullies in his school. I decided I will cut Marco's some slack - obviously just my opinion.

And of course sometimes he was too demanding of his friend Steven and most of the time as an awesome "sidekick" (his word, not mine :) ), he just took it. But Hanna Moskowitz mastered the art of "showing" what her characters are feeling rather than "telling" IMO. I had absolutely no doubt that Marco loved Steven as a friend and valued him when I finished the book - of course opinions may differ on that one. I also thought that while Steven was a very good kid overall, he was not without flaws either.

Kids need heroes...

I entertain my minivan-bound children with books on tape/CD. The best are the Harry Potter series. There are many other good ones. And this is a good non-fiction title for children.

Kids need heroes, and this tape provides my 5 and 7 year old boys with some impressive ones. The heroes come from the worlds of politics, science, literature, religion... This tape is one of my 7 year old son's favorites. It has a very positive message for him. He gets ideas of what he could be.

Volume 2 (the one I have) tells the stories of some historical figures, emphasizing all the positive and heroic qualities of each: Alexander the Great, Joan of Arc, Leonardo Da Vinci, Isaac Newton, Ludwig van Beethoven, Louis Pasteur, Marie Curie, Mahatma Gandhi, and George Washington.

As an adult accustomed to having his heroes routinely discredited, I find these idealized portraits naive, but kind of refreshing. If you have kids you know that they have a purpose: to introduce you to the world again, and show you its wonder. These portraits of heroes are simplified and abstracted in a way that highlights their abilities. No jaded cynicism here. These scientists, thinkers, statesmen, musicians, were all leaders. My young leader could do worse than to select a role model from one of these larger than life heroes.

Two other notes.

1. The tapes are abridged, while the CDs are not. Buy the CD.

2. Amazon has one description for both volume 1 and 2. Misleading. They contain different people.

AWSOME BOOK!!! Read it five times now!!

Fairytale Within A Fairytale

Set against a shimmering backdrop of a magical snow-laden Russian forest, The Wolf Princess is a modern day fairytale not so unlike the old Cinderella story. Although throughout reading this enchanting story I felt the plot quite predictable and certainly a Disney film waiting to happen, I have to admit I really enjoyed it.

As three teenage girls endure the hardships of a London Boarding School, their humdrum lives of poetry and physics soon rush toward excitement as they are invited to embark on a school trip via steam train to the fabulous city of St. Petersburg. Marianne, having the most intellectual brain of the three is a physics and math whiz. Delphine is a spoiled rich kid whose daily focus is on the latest fashions from Paris. Sophie however, who becomes our heroine, is a poor girl from the British countryside with no family and nothing but an absentee guardian that wants nothing to do with her ward. Sophie's only memories are of her father, who when she was a little girl would tell her stories of far off lands and sing her to sleep with Russian folksongs.

When the three fair maidens get off the train in St. Petersburg, they are suddenly whisked away by a handsome Russian named Ivan and brought to the rundown, ruined Winter Palace of historic legend. Not understanding why they are there and feeling fear, these three young girls are soon enmeshed in a mind-blowing mystery that involves murder, lost diamonds, secret passages, and a missing princess thought lost to the world forever.

This story is not a warm and fuzzy fairytale. It is often dark, dangerous, and one of fiendish derring-do complete with villains in every direction Sophie turns. Readers will feel the cold Russian forest as blizzards swirl around the air, hear white wolves howling in the night, and will wipe away snowflakes that fall on their face. For a debut novel, Catherine Constable comes out of the YA starting gate with a hit that readers of all ages will find fun to dive into. Good character development, appropriate writing style for the current teen market, and a plotline to keep you guessing. Even if you do find the story predictable and early on figure out the ending, you still won't know the how or the why it happened. What I enjoyed the most is that The Wolf Princess was so atmospheric. I really felt like I was there!

I have one comment on the cover design. I would have liked something not as sweet. The cover is a pretty one, but its appearance seems to present more of a Middle Reader story when in fact it is more for older teens in the Young Adult age group. With this being such a stormy tale, a more serious cover just might lure the older kids to pick up the book and give it a try. Something more dark and macabre for the paperback version to come might help make it more attractive. All and all, Good stuff!
