2nd book in the Dragon's Nest Series

My son and I LOVE the Dragon's Nest series. This second book is not as action-packed as #1 in the series. The plot twists were more difficult to process, from my son's point of view. He did not enjoy this installment as much as the first book in the series, but he still loved reading the series and can't wait to find out the rest of Lief's adventures as he seeks to destroy all 4 Sisters.

Super series for this age group

We start with the eight volumes of Deltora Quest. Then the Deltora Shadowlands series. Then the four volumes of the Dragons of Deltora.

This book is Volume 2 of the Dragons of Deltora series. In the Quest series, each volume concerns a search for one of the gems that fits in the magic belt of Deltora. In this series, our heroes must find and destroy the Four Sisters, one per volume.

Now, all of this sounds like the same book, over and over again. But, Rodda keeps each book fresh. She keeps an eye on the arc of each series, but gives each individual book its own appeal. That is quite a feat.

Rodda's Rowan of Rin is for younger readers and is a great introduction to quest fantasy. These books are the next step. Deeper characters, more complex plot, more demanding writing style. But again, a wonderful introduction to quest fantasy and very accessible and very satisfying.

One of the best of Deltora

This bookÂof theÂDeltora seriesÂis very exciting because it is a story about self- finding and is very complicated. The main character is the king of Deltora. His name is Leif and he goes through a lot of difficulties. The book Dragons of Deltora Shadowgate is one book of the series of Deltora and you need to know the whole series to understand the book. I would recommend this book to readers aged 9-12. I think this because it is very confusing and jumps around alot.

Exciting second adventure in the Dragons of Deltora series.

Lief, Jasmine, and Barda have destroyed the first of the Four Sisters, the Sister of the East, at Dragon's Nest, but their perilous journey continues. Three of the Sisters still remain, and they must next find and destroy the Sister of the North. Their dangerous journey takes them north toward the border with the Shadowlands, as they search for the Dragon of the Emerald to help them in their quest. Their destination is Shadowgate, where the Sister of the North lies hidden. The Shadow Lord knows of their mission and is determined to stop them. The three companions must fight off many dangers, both known and unknown, if they are to succeed.

This book was the second exciting adventure in the third Deltora series, Dragons of Deltora.

Great condition!

Meg McKinlay's latest is a work of art.

Cassie was born on the day her town died. Or rather, the day that her town was purposely flooded and everything was rebuilt around a manmade lake. Everything is supposed to be the same. But Cassie, the youngest of her siblings, feels like she doesn't belong. She doesn't remember the old town, but her family does. Her sister and brother have memories from their old house, and she can never, ever be a part of that.

Cassie has always been fascinated by the lake, and, ordered by the doctor to swim regularly to strengthen her lungs, she finds herself there, instead of the pool, doing her laps. At first, it's just to avoid the crowded pool. But soon, it's discoveries. The off-limits side of the lake. A friend she didn't know she had. And -- on the edge of the town's highly anticipated centennial celebration -- a mystery that could unravel everything, especially for a few pillars of the community.

BELOW is a beautiful novel. The writing, the characters, the town of Lower Grange -- all gorgeous and filled out perfectly, like summer should be. And, also like summer, it's fleeting. A page-turner that keeps you up at night, waiting to find the next clue. And while this doesn't read like a whodunnit, it is a mystery, with themes of growing up, family, and friendship. Meg McKinlay's latest is a work of art, and I hope many summer readers are finding it as refreshing as I did.

Beautifully Written

This book surprised me, which is something that rarely happens and it is typically something small. However this book was an all around surprising book for me and I definitely wouldn't have been able to guess how it ended, let alone what happened in the middle. Trust that it has a happy ending. Truthfully I hadn't realized that the town was legitimately submerged underneath water and so was the town's secrets. The plot flowed easily which made it that much easier to slip into the life of the main character as she struggled between who she is and the past that she didn't have a chance to be a part of.

Cassie, the main character, was born early - that much was made clear. Perhaps, she shouldn't have been born at all or so some people believe. It would be hard to tear your family away from the triumphant moment when the town sunk beneath the water especially when it seems to haunt you since you were born.

Prineas Does it Again

Summerkin is an excellent book,even more so than Winterling. It had action, laughter on occasion and above all a very refreshing heroine. All the characters were very well formed and developed except for,unfortunately,our villain Aranthiel.Speaking of which,that should be a spoiler,since Aranthiel at first pretends to be a friend of Fer's but that not lasts for about two pages before Fer finds out who he really is.But WE don't. For one thing,Prineas kept hinting at the old,old age and "rotten core" that lay beneath Aaranthiel's surface. Which kept me eagerly waiting for the time when she'd reveal the whole backstory.but she never did,so...

On to my favorite part of the book...Rook's puck-brothers.Awesomeness but not quite,exactly as I like them.And by the end of the book they haven't become Fer's best buddies or puck-bodyguards either, which is good.However,I'm still hoping for maybe a closer relationship between our Lady and the pucks,especially Tatter,who seemed to take more of a shine to her than the others.

Now for Rook!! Okay..so I don't understand how the question of "are we friends or not" drags on till the end of the book and is STILL not resolved!Not only is it irritating but it puts us in an awkward position. Dies this mean that the conclusion of the trilogy will be "Rook and Fer have at last decided that they are friends." Or worse,will Prineas go all Collins on us and have Rook and Fer agree that it's not possible for them to be friends at all? Please,please don't let that happen.

I have a few requests for book 3:

1.please please please let Rook and Fer be friends at least-

2.please give us an awesome villain

3.please let us see phouka in person form

And...

4.pucks!give us more pucks!especially Tatter.Besides Rook he's my absolute favorite.

Not Disney-ized

I bought this Kindle edition for a school (college) assignment. Having grown up on the Disney version, I do not recall ever having read the original story. I really enjoyed reading this and think it is by far better than the Disney version. There is a lot more action and Pinocchio has a lot more adventures in this original. I liked the line drawings, too.

Fascinating anecdotes

Guinea Pig Scientists contains nine chapters, each on a different scientist who made a difference by plaicng themself in harm's way to varying degrees. The book is hardly in depth, but it covers the most important aspects of each scientists methods and what was learned from them. This would be a great book to use to get adolescents interested in scientific inquiry. It is an engaging read, and the gross out factor will bring in even reluctant readers. Be warned: not all of the scientists survive their experiments.

Guinea Pig Scientists is a wonderful introduction for putting a face and an exciting story behind a particular science. I expect many children (and adults) to go read further about different topics or the scientists because their appetites have finally been whetted.

short, easy and fun: stories which prove people are crazy

This well designed book is aimed at junior high/high school readers, but is really good for anyone interested in science and scientists. It treats, with copious quotations and illustrations, the many scientists that used themselves as test subjects, injecting themselves with diseases, using themselves as crash test dummies, breathing and handling all kinds of dangerous substances, sometimes with fatal consequences. We all benefit from their courage (and foolhardiness?) in the interest of science. Interesting, and well told. Very positive.

Good nonfiction read

GUINEA PIG SCIENTISTS by Leslie Dendy and Mel Boring share with readers ten true stories of men and women who have been so dedicated to scientific research that they have experimented on themselves. These include George Fordyce, Lazzaro Spallanzani, William Morton, Horace Wells, Daniel Carrion, Jesse Lazear, Marie and Pierre Curie, John Scott and Jack Haldane, Werner Forssmann, John Paul Stapp, and Stefania Follini.

Each chapter includes several illustrations (sketchs, and/or photographs which are all captioned), several sidebars filled with additional information, and concludes with a "Now We Know" section which brings the research up to date.
