I can only say wow so many times, people.

I do love me some good Southern Gothic. Give me the moss, the humidity, the accents, the witchy women and rawboned men and we are in BUSINESS. Alas, my reading adventures have been sorely lacking in any kind of tasty home-fried creepy southern goodness lately, to the point that it had been so long, I didnât even realize how much I missed it.

Until today. The opening of this book is a harrowing, attention-getting, where-are-my-socks-oh-they-are-blown-off, unexpected treat. I was hooked from that very first snippet.

The Touch Trilogy is (as the name implies) a collection of three sequential novellas, combined here into one juicy delicious book. The book takes place in various locations in Georgia, in a world thatâs basically ours, but with one glaring exception: Some people have The Touch, which allows them to see and affect the future, go through flames without being burned, and a whole bunch of other fun things that I wonât spoil here.

The problem with having the The Touch is that it frequently drives people to murderous insanity.

Hes Still Got It

Kim Newman is, in my opinion one of the most criminally underrated fiction writers working today. Hes an expert at incorporating familiar characters we all know and love into a fascinating world in which we see our beloved literary, film, and television icons in ways we never have before. His new characters interact seamlessly with our favorite icons and his world building is top notch. His work is fun, insightful, clever, original, horrifying, nuanced, and has a surprising amount to say about our own world. I buy every KN work opening day because he consistently surprises and entertains. Definitely give it a look/listen.

Another set of great stories by Neal Asher. Worth suffering the poor narration for. It sounds like the narrator is half asleep and the speed is very slow. I could only listen by altering the speed to 125%..

Solid future noir and other tales

A bunch of stories linked by The Slab, a space slum fulll of all sorts of low-lifes, incudling werewolves, vampires and genetically modified people. A solid anthology of sorts, though I think it was a case where I'd prefer if I read them. That being said, the narrator amped up the gumshoe noir feel with an excellent performance. Close to 4.5/10.

Space detective story with extra spice

Slab City Blues manages to bring the world of the strange into Sci-Fi that I can not help but love. Anthony Ryan has filled his universe with an array of larger than life characters and at the centre is Alex Mcleod. An ex-military man now earning a living on the orbital space station The Slab.

The five stories (one novel and 4 Novellas) see Alex chasing leads and calling in favours however he is a formidable force and his "Demon" status is more than earned by the end of the book.

The narration by Steven Brand fits perfectly with the gritty nature as he breathes life into the characters helping to wrap the project up perfectly.

The zombie action was as good as any out there. The main character was whiny and unappealing through out the whole book. And wow -the author really hates smokers and between the two I won't continue the series.

The Zee Brothers are back!!

So the Zee Brothers are back! This time they get a call saying that there has been an outbreak at the school. The brothers go to check it out but end up leaving their Zombie hunting gear in the van because of the schools security system. They were only expecting one Zombie anyway! But what they find is an outbreak that is becoming out of control. The brothers find themselves on lock down with a hoard of Zombies and no weapons. Can they bumble their way out of this??

I love the brothers!! They are so fun and easy to like. They stumble upon these situations and while it seems that they won't get out of them, they somehow always manage to!! They are an absolute hoot!!!

While I liked the plot of this, I felt that I missed something. The outbreak happens because of a chemical component that was produced by a company, and from what I gather, the brothers had an encounter with this company already and stopped an outbreak, that's how they got into the job. I never read that one and so felt like I missed a big part of the overall plot. Also, the love triangle is really not great. I hate love triangles, but when you add in the fact that it's brothers, it just makes it super weird and uncomfortable. I cringed a lot and just wanted her to pick one.

In all, this was a fun read. I really do enjoy the boys and can't wait to see more from them.

Ian McEuen does a great job with the boys. He is easy to listen to and reads this well. He had plenty of voices and tones for the different characters too.

interesting book

Definitely a different take on zombies. Pretty interesting that the author came up with professional zombie killers. Very novel approach and different. I really liked this book. Most zombie books are serious and this one had a playfulness to it. The narrarator did a really good job with the characters as well. I could really picture the brothers in my minds eye. This is a break from the taditional zombie books. Great book to add to your zombie collection.

Quirky Second Story

I enjoyed this second in the series! Grivante is just awesome at making a story that is fun and suspenseful plus action packed! Its a short listen to and I highly recommend for some walks or a road trip to spice it up! You will love these Zee Brothers. So what I loved about the story was the plot, pacing, and character development. There was something I disliked and that would be the love story. It was odd and felt out of place in the novel. Plus it was a love triangle, my least favorite type of love trope.

Fairy Tales Done Perfectly

I absolutely loved this collection of fairy tales, reimagined classics that are beautifully written and completely unexpected. I would want to revisit these again and again. Highly, highly recommended. Brava!!

Amazing!

I love this book. it's like discovering Christian Andersen's Tales for the first time. Each story it's so unique and unexpected.

Like a Sister Grimm

I loved the first story, but could barely finish the next two. It is very well written, but dark. These fairytales teach lessons in the old grim way but for this day and age. The overall moral seems to be: be careful who you trust because even the people you love and count on the most can be hiding a monster inside. These stories haunt me unpleasantly. I don't think I'll finish them.

If you are a fan of Grimm fairytales, where the witch is rolled down the hill in a barrel studded with nails or are cooked in their own ovens, you'll probably love these.

***Spoiler alert***

The thing is, the innocent are harmed dreadfully in these stories too. I guess that makes it more like real life, and is a lesson in itself. The happily ever after in the stories I read left the protagonist almost as battered and scarred as the antagonist.

Nice to have all the stories in one place.

I remember reading each of these short stories in digital format when they first came out. I really enjoyed being able to listen to them by an amazing narrator and now have them all in one place. Leigh bardugo has added so much to the Grisha world and I can't wait for 2019 and her Darkling book

blown away

I was genuinely surprised with each stories end. the author did a marvelous job of keeping you interested, guessing, and wanting more. each tale has a slightly eerie tone that keeps till the conclusion. the narrator was perfect for this book. seriously loved every second and know it will forever be a favorite.

Robert Bevan writes some hilarious stories, but the guys at Saturn5 Sound really bring these characters to life!!! I love this series so much!

Fun and hilarious!

These are a bunch a short stories in the Caverns and Creatures (C&C) book-verse. The premise is that a group of idiots get transported into the game world as their characters. Hilarity ensues. There are also full length C&C books about these characters. These short stories are separate from the main story line so you can read them to get a feel for the author without worrying about spoilers if you eventually want to read the main series. There are also 3 short story collections that came before this one. None of them are timeline or plot contiguous, so you can read them in any order. I highly recommend the short stories and the main arc. However, if you don't like poop jokes, walk away now. There is a lot of that kind of humor in all these books. That is not all that can be found inside, however. The stories are great. Fun and complete. You really get a feel for the characters, even in this short story format. I have read and listened to all the books in the series to date. The narrator for this series is great. He does such a great job maneuvering between the different personalities and races (halfling to half-orc). It is very enjoyable. I highly recommend all of Bevan's books for a good time. He and a bunch of other comedic fantasy writers also have a podcast where they hilariously play pathfinder. It's called Authors and Dragons. Check all of it out.

this isn't a, my groups dnd sessions would make a great novel, kind of book.

these are fantastic original stories about what it would be like to be stuck in a table top RPG game Jumanji style.

What made the experience of listening to 4d6 the most enjoyable?

I have yet to complete this listen, but so far Bevan delivers! J.Sleep's voices flesh out Bevan's characters perfectly! So, I guess it is a team effort that I enjoy the most. These two have a great thing going! Bevan's humor and J. Sleep's voices, one of the top 3 combos in my opinion. And ya know what, I can't think of any two I'd rate better. (Although Steve Campbell / Liam Owen or Paul Kemp / Nick Podehl are damn close)

What other book might you compare 4d6 to and why?

Just finished Kings of the Wyld (Nicholas Eames / Jeff Harding, really great listen!) which was close because of a fantasy setting, some Bevanesque language and some very good humor. But my bottom line is I have yet to find anything quite like the CF series.

Any additional comments?

Lets just say I love Correia's MHI series and downloaded Siege yesterday.

I dove into 4d6 right away instead. Sorry Larry but Owen and company will have to wait.
