    Educational and Entertaining
This book does a great job of showing the dangers and evil of censorship of thought, using entertaining Sci-fi short stories.
    Gut wrenching thought provoking
A modern 1984. Fresh not fearful not pc. I was moved to tears of sadness and joy. An antidote to neo-liberal marxist ideology. A painful pleasure to grow.
    Failed concept
Right wing propaganda. Far from forbidden concepts. Just the bullshit everyone is tired of the christian right bitching about because. not everyone wants to live in a theocracy.
    Mind numbing and boring
If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
Somebody back in the 1950's might find it controversial and funny......
What was most disappointing about the authorss story?
The premise of the book could be stated in one paragraph the rest is just repetition about gender. I expected it to be more cutting edge and witty.
Did Jon Mollison do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?
No they all sounded the same.
    Any additional comments?
    Will be returning it.

  • Unfettered II Audiobook by Shawn Speakman - editor, Charlaine Harris, Jim Butcher, Brandon Sanderson

    Title: Unfettered II

    Publisher: Audible Studios

    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy
    Publisher's Summary:
Life can kick us when we are down.
In Shawn Speakman's case, he is fighting back.
Lacking health insurance and diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2011, Speakman beat the disease as well as the massive medical debt he amassed from its treatment. He did this by publishing Unfettered, an anthology featuring short stories donated by some of the best science fiction and fantasy writers working today.
The fight will not stop there. In an effort to pay forward the aid he received - and to memorialize his mother who passed away from stomach cancer in early 2016 - Speakman has again collaborated with celebrated genre authors to publish Unfettered II. All proceeds from the anthology will either help eliminate medical debt for other authors or be donated to cancer research hubs around the world.
Twenty original new tales comprise this amazing collection and, as the title suggests, the writers were again free to contribute whatever they wished.
Here is the lineup for Unfettered II:
With the help of New York Times best-selling authors as well as talented newcomers, Speakman has taken the platform Unfettered created to not only confront medical debt but to support the battle against one of our gravest illnesses. Unfettered II is a fantastic sequel anthology, but it is more than that; it is proof that we are stronger together than we are apart.
After all, isn't that what genre fiction is all about?

    Mixed bag
This collection was incredibly diverse with a few stories unfinished, but the best stories made the whole purchase worth it! Great way to find a new favorite author or voice actor.
This is a very nice fantasy anthology.
Speakman has been a very solid job collecting works from a number of accomplished authors. As is often the case the big names are the best. Here, Brandon Sanderson's excerpt from The Stormlight Archive "The Thrill" is the real standout if you are already acquainted with his other work.
"Day One" by Jim Butcher featuring a short story about Butters from The Dresden Files is a must read or listen to any fan of Dresden, Urban fantasy, or Gaming.
I think the Hidden Gem (so to speak) here is "And Men Will Mine the Mountain for Our Souls" by Seanan McGuire. I've never read what I can only describe as a first person introspective by a dragon before. But now that I have I can't imagine anybody could do better.
Not every short story in this or any Anthology is a home run. that said I think there's enough here to satisfy most people. And it's very well produced with a great cast. Even Nick Podell makes an appearance although James Marsters is more noticeably absent.
    Plenty of great stories
A motley collection of high fantasy and science fiction that stays modern and fresh. I hope Speakman doesn't need another tragedy in his life to give us book 3.
    Mostly engaging
Some very good short stories here. There were enough to make it a worthwhile purchase.
    Mixed feelings about the book
I have found with purchasing an audio book that has multiple stories by multiple authors, you love some, and some not-so-much.
I purchased this for Jim Butcher's story and was pleasantly surprised with a tale from Butter's view.

    It was over too soon
I enjoyed myself when I stumbled upon 14 a few years back. I couldn't put it down. The same goes for The Fold and now this new set of stories. If you are into anything that makes you think then this is for you. Definitely worth the credit.
    Readers Shan't Complain Either
Wonderful collection... Weirdly eclectic and amusing.... You've got your aliens, zombies, superheroes, artificial beings, werewolves, lawmen, mad scientists, etc... I liked all the stories, which can be unusual for some collections, and loved most... If you like the author's other works you'll definitely enjoy... If you haven't read him this would be a nice introduction... There's a nice post "Ex" story in here, and many w/ wonderful twists and reveals... The performance is fantastic...
Love Clines' Writing & Porter's Narration
So, what is not to like about the writing of Peter Clines paired with Ray Porter's voice?!?!? This was an excellent compilation of short stories that were well narrated by both narrators. I particularly enjoyed the first short story (the title escapes me) and the title story. The stories were of varying lengths and all of them kept my interest. The only complaint I have is that some of them ended too abruptly; but perhaps that is just a sign that they were so good that I wanted more! The abrupt endings of some of the stories was what kept this from being a 5 star rating.
    Wonderful collection
I really enjoyed this collection. For one, between series I need short palette cleaners -- and this one was perfect for the job. It's about a dozen 30 minute self-contained short stories. Second and more important, each story was really well written. This doesn't feel like leftover rushed story scraps. Each story had its own flavor and was top notch. Lastly, both narrators were good but Ray Porter is quickly making a fan-boy of me and was as good as ever. I almost didn't get this collection but I'm so, so glad I did.
Peter Clines Is a Spinner of Wonder
Don't let the short run time make you think it's not worth a credit.
There's half a dozen stories here with plots worthy of full novels. Clines manages to convey them concisely & colourfully.
    Top Marks.

    Publisher's Summary:
The people that killed the world were fiendishly clever.
After decades of planning, the contagion was unleashed, and overnight hundreds of millions died and came back as rampaging, undead monsters. The living that had been lucky enough to survive the first day of carnage, lucky enough to be in the right place, and lucky enough that some of them had the skills to survive soon found out there was much more to worry about than just zombies.
In the high desert on the outskirts of Reno, there is an old truck stop frequented by a mix of hard caliber truckers, day tourists, musicians, and travelers. They have survived the chaotic first hours of contact with the undead and now must make their way across the country to a location they believe is safe. Zombies are only the beginning of their troubles as they try to cover the thousands of miles of open road with their hastily armored 18-wheelers. Gunny, a long haul trucker doing one of the few jobs available to him as a disgraced soldier, is unwillingly saddled with the job of getting these survivors to the safe zone. With a motley crew of truck drivers, college kids, veterans, a drug dealer, and a rock star, they are racing the clock to make it before time runs out. The last text he had received from his wife before the cell towers went down told him she was trapped in a high-rise in downtown Atlanta and their son was in detention, stranded in the basement of the school he attended. Gunny just wanted to drop the hammer, steal some guns, and blast his way in to rescue them, but duty called. He had to get these people to safety first, then he could recruit the best of this crew to help him save his family. If they survived the journey.

    Well that was a suprise!
If you are like me you have a strange addiction to zombie, apocalyptic, and dystopian books. While I make myself leave the genre, I have a wish list full of books. Also if you are like me, you have read the easy titles like all of Mark Tufo (more than once). Often I try a new author and I get a lukewarm book or more infrequently a terrible title that I return. But occasionally a book surprises me. I have to admit the character premise in this book was not that appealing to me and I had left it in my wish list for a while. But after my last two very forgettable reads I said what the heck. What a Great Surprise this book turned out to be. It was fun, believable in a fun fiction kind of way, and I like the characters. I only gave it a 4 on story, because I am a character development junkie (Tufo, Stephen King etc). I am hoping that Mr Simpson fleshes out the personality of his characters more in the next book. He has an excellent base with this book, and touches on some military humor and relationships, but I crave more to really become invested with the characters in a story. But if you like the genre this is a fun romp. Just purchased the next book in the series and I am looking forward to starting it now. On a side note the epilogue made me chuckle.
    Eric A. Shelman nails it!
Would you consider the audio edition of Zombie Road to be better than the print version?
No! But it complements it and brings the characters to life with the different voices.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Gunny is my favourite.

    The Dog Is Good
I have been wanting to get a TW book for sometime. His stuff never goes on sale. I went ahead and wasted a credit. Brown seems to write exclusively in the Zombie genre and I like good zombie books. I was also impressed that he is a reviewer. A reviewer that does not always give five stars to his writing buddies. Card is a reviewer, but he only gives five stars. So, I that this guy must be gutsy.
I only got through close to five hours. I thought the story was weak and had too many unbelievable things happen. In no particular order, 1. A music teacher who was a construction worker? I have never meet a music teacher who could lift a hammer. 2. The main character goes out of his way to not watch the news, even after weird stuff starts happening? 3. Why are all these people running around in a pick up truck? In a Zombie apocalypse, there are lots of abandoned cars. Any town with a school has a least one car lot. Didn't these other teachers have cars? Why put all your eggs in one basket?
    Other annoying things
Get a professional narrator. The majority of your men sound like women. Too much introspective thinking. That is not they way it happens in the movies. If I heard that once I heard it ten times. First, it is very cliché and second, who cares. Why don't you say this is not the way it happens in books? Writers seem to think it adds authenticity to their writing to say that. There is zero science in this. One of the great things about a Zombie book, is the writer coming up with a unique or clever way this happened. Was it a government conspiracy? An experiment gone wrong, a mad scientist, some virus from South America, an alien invasion, What? How do your zombies differ from other zombies?
    The book cover
Based on the Tim Burton style cover of the book, I thought maybe our main characters would be zombies themselves. The girlfriend became one early on, but was quickly forgotten. Tufo's Timothy series is cool, because it comes from the perspective of the zombie.
My favorite Zombie books are Cell, by King. These zombies gather together and form a sort of community, plus you become a zombie by using your phone. Joseph Duncan's Cattle, has zombies who are smart and they breed humans for food. Scott Sigler's Pandemic, has zombies that are part of an alien invasion theme.
    Hey Audible
Why are there only 15 books in the zombie category and you can't browse to get there. You have to find a book that is specifically categorized as Zombie in order to go through the back door.

    Masterpiece!
Ursula La Guine delivers an absolute masterpiece!
The Found of the Lost is one of the most incisive anthology of sci-fi and fantasy that I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Le Guin is an absolute master! She expertly delves into into magic, slavery, gender, misogyny, patriarchy, theology, the nature and formation of family and the terrible fragility of life.
The stories flows through all of these topics in creative, lyrical and at times whimsical pros that are delivering in fantastic narrations. She does this all while building credible strong and clear futuristic sci-fi speculative fiction and imaginative fantastic alternate worlds.
This has to be one of the best narrations ever put together on audible. The production was outstanding.
    very good
I loved the variety of stories and hearing about my dear friend ged once more. the only problem I found wasn't a book or story issue but is the listing of chapter numbers vs story names and titles. I LOVED the final story and a few between but it would be hard to go back to the beginning of them to re "read" it.
    Thoroughly Enjoyable
I've relished this author's works more than fourth years now and have always enjoy the psycho-social ponderings of writers such as Le Guin who exam gender roles in non-traditional fantastical cultures. The narration was very engaging. Being new to audio books, It was surprisingly effortless to give over control to the narrator. Good story telling!
LeGuin carries us far outside and deep within.
I never imagined enjoying a collection of stories more than a long, tightly-woven tapestry, but so it is.
    Ursala Le Guin rediscovered
I remember being fascinated by the thoroughly human descriptions Ursula colours stories with, which I read many years ago, when I was a youth.
It was delightful to have the same experience again with this anthology.
I cant wait for them to make a screen adaptation.
    Thought provoking and entertaining!

    A Whovian Christmas treat!
Generally with anthologies, there are a few clunkers in among the gold, but here every story is enjoyable. Christmas and the Doctor just seem to go together.
    A delightful set of Stories
This is a fun little set of lighthearted tales each featuring one of the doctors and either including or tying into one of their companion's lives.
    FANTASTIC
Love all the stories, I especially loved chapter 8 it was creepy and sad. IT WAS FANTASTIC!
    Loved it
I really loved this book. I am already familiar with the 9th - 12th doctors so listening to stories with the previous doctors was quite enjoyable
    A great book!
The story's in this book are great because they're so varied some funny some scary and some exciting. The 1st doctors story is a bit alarming at the end but still very interesting. The second doctors story is a bit odd because it used a ninth doctor alien in a second doctor story. The 3rd doctor is absolutely hilarious but a bit of a sudden end. The fourth makes no sense at all so I am just gonna skip it. The fifth one has so much action it is so good!!! The sixth one is a bit boring but still interesting
