Wonderful read

Great book. Stayed up late to finish it. Although the book covers a relatively short period of time, there is excellent character development. The protagonist is flawed but very likeable. The antagonist is deplorable and unlikable. The book has an excellent premise, the exploration of urban "caves" and spelunking in those caves, in this case an uncompleted and abandoned subway system under Cincinnati. I checked the internet, such a system does exist. I was unaware of this even though I graduated from the same university as the author. My only criticism is that the end may be drawn out. I heartily recommend this book; it kept me interested the whole way.

Big surprise

I had never heard of this author, but the topic was intriguing. Boy, was I surprised! It was a really well written book. Lots of nerve wracking excitement. And a very satisfying ending. I believe this is his first novel, and I am very impressed! Bravo!

Revenge leads to destruction.

The story line was good. When his father was killed while working at Drax, Lucas set out to destroy Drax. With the help of a few friends an adventure of danger takes them to some of the most dangerous tunnels and up against a very evil man.

Follow Me Down

Loved it! Packed chock full of action, mystery and surprises. I would recommend this book for any one that !ikes the thriller genre.

Title says it all. With all the poor grammar and ridiculous story lines in the ebooks today thus one is a wonderful change with a good story and an author who know how to properly form sentences! Going to read more of his works!!

And here's another of my guilty pleasure reads for the summer - the fifth entry in Carolyn Haines' Sarah Booth Delaney series. It was great fun to read and, indeed, may be my favorite in the series so far.

Sarah Booth Delaney's private investigation business in the little delta town of Zinnia, Mississippi, now has an actual business office. She has set up a couple of rooms of her family's plantation home, Dahlia House, as offices for herself and her partner, Tinkie. There's even a place for a receptionist's desk, just in case the business ever grows to the point that it needs one.

Sarah Booth's latest case begins when she is contacted by a nun from New Orleans. The nun is a friend of a woman who is now being held on a warrant from New Orleans in the local Zinnia jail. The woman, Doreen, is a spiritualist and alleged faith healer with a large following in New Orleans. She had a baby who had severe birth defects and the baby has recently died. An autopsy revealed that the cause of death, which was at first thought to be Sudden Infant Death syndrome, had actually been sleeping pills that were put in the baby's formula. The mother has been charged with murder in the case, but the nun doesn't believe she did it and she wants to hire Sarah Booth to establish her innocence.

This creates a bit of a problem for Sarah Booth who has to go to the jail to see Doreen. She had been trying to stay away from the sheriff's office so she wouldn't run into the sheriff, Coleman Peters, for whom she has strong and tender feelings. Problem is Coleman, who reciprocates those feelings, is trying to save his troubled marriage because his deeply troubled wife is pregnant, and he doesn't need to be tempted by Sarah Booth.

Meeting with Doreen does give Sarah Booth and Tinkie the sense that she is most likely innocent of killing her baby, but if she didn't do it, who did? Suspicion settles on the father, but who is that? Doreen refuses to name him.

Doreen is returned to the custody of the New Orleans Police Department and Sarah and Tinkie travel to New Orleans to continue their investigation. They are also (very conveniently) just in time for the Orange and Black Ball, one of the most popular social events of the year. Of course, the two get invited and, of course, just in time, a wealthy suitor from Sarah Booth's past, Hamilton, shows up to escort her to the ball.

In addition to being wealthy and cultured, Hamilton is incredibly handsome and is engaged in trying to make the world a better place. In other words, he is a paragon of virtues. He's also apparently very good in bed, though, naturally, Sarah Booth never gives us the details.

At length, their client, Doreen, is persuaded to give Tinkie and Sarah Booth information about the three men who could possibly be her dead daughter's father.

Enjoyable introduction to a new series

I enjoyed this book, and the narrator, once I got used to his somewhat heavy voice. The lead character sometimes comes across as rather gloomy. But then he has his reasons.

Finally on Audible

Having a friend who reads these books months before they become available I've been eagerly awaiting this new Graco series. This was a good start so can't wait to get catching up. I hope that unlike the Calladine & Bayliss series, also by Helen H Durrant which I loved, all the books become available on Audible.

Outstanding is the name of the game when Jamie Lee Scott writes.

The team is back and as great as ever. The crime, the victim and the perpetrator are all complex and disturbing but so compelling! I have come to care about Mimi more than ever but my crush on Charles is waning as his arrogance seems to grow but then he has the knowledge and skills to back it up. I suspect if I saw him in action, that crush would grow. I do wish Matthew had been in the story more but his presence wouldn't have fit the story line. I loved that Mimi got to work with Nick some as well as Charles this time and it was great to see that Lydia is still working out well. I love the little something extra that having Mimi's mother on the job has brought to the office. Their interaction is another step that has made Mimi seem more approachable.

The case is as complex, one of Jamie Lee Scott's trademarks. A man shows up at the office to ask the team to find his wife even though she has been gone for less than a day. Seems simple enough but red flags are already flying for Mimi and with good reason. It appears that there are so many secrets floating around that the whole truth may never be known.

I used to really like this series :-/

I am not sure if it is the disjointed writing, the typos or the random "protest and cop haters" comment that came out of nowhere (OR all of the above) but this one royally sucked. I kept falling asleep on it but had to finish because I kept hoping, based upon prior books, it would get better -- it didn't.

Save your energy and hope for better with the next one.

Mary May Have a Little Scam, But Jamie Has a Big Hit!

Another great Gotcha Detective Agency book! Each time Jamie Lee Scott puts out a new book I can't wait to download it. This time around Mimi & her detectives catch a really grisly murder case. This is a well plotted page turner with some very interesting plot twists. Lots of interesting characters, especially the mysterious Charles.

Another nail biting winner

There's no explaining how habit forming these Gotcha books can be. I sure hope that they will be continuing for a long time. It's time to start the next one.

Bummer ending

Great read but wow! The story just ended like she was tired of it ! Why was the deceased fringers cut off? No explanation as to why, did I miss something?

Hostels, late night drinking, online intimidation...oh oh

I am now officially traumatised. The end of the prologue in particular will ever stay in my mind. As will most other moments this novel throws at you.

The premise is haunting, the setting the darkest dankest corners of Bayswater in London and some of the punchiest, panic inducing set ups since time began. Haha yes and there are some sick people out there wandering about Londonâs streets if this novel is anything to go by.

This grabbed me as more than your regular crime thriller though as it was an onion of a novel â if I can liken a novel to a vegetable â with each layer came another one of intrigue and mystery. I felt I was getting closer to the central truth but the stench of evil was getting ever stronger. My eyes were stinging, my hands felt dirtyâ.now this is one immersive experience isnât it?

freezing fingers down your spine tale on a pitch-black night

If you haven't yet read Stav Sherez, do yourself a favour: go to your favorite bookstore and grab a copy of one of his books today. Even though this is the third in his excellent series starring police detectives Carrigan and Miller, Sherez isn't your standard police procedural series author. He writes literary crime thrillers with a joyfully dark heart, which just happen to involve police investigators.

Sherez beautifully entwines style and substance in his crime novels, delivering some heft without disrupting a smooth, page-turning narrative. There's a crackle to his prose, a viewpoint and voice that's a little distinct, and overall is just a pleasure to read (despite creepy subject matter).

Technology is all pervasive nowadays - we don't have to worry about George Orwell's idea of an autocracy watching every move of its citizenship - we've pretty much done it to ourselves, by choice.

Sherez taps into that reality in THE INTRUSIONS with a criminal who uses technology to stalk and terrorise his victims, remotely taking over their lives. DI Carrigan is facing stark consequences for his past actions: his job, and even his freedom, are in jeopardy. An old nemesis is gleefully looking to drop the guillotine.

I enjoyed the silliness and the mild intrigue. The romance angle of the niece and the detective seemed a little contrived, but still fun too.

Leonard Was Killed With A Frying Pan

This was a cute, romantic mystery. It was a fast read because so many trite phrases were used. I had trouble staying focused on the plot and keeping the characters straight. But that could have just been me. I do think some of the dialogue could have been more original.

A cozy mystery with a touch of romance

Who knew life in a seniors community could be so wild, suspenseful, and hilarious? Sisters-in-law Fern and Zula Hopkins are opposite in every way except age. How they keep from killing one another is a mystery, but that's not the mystery of this book. Their zany antics to solve the murder of the cook keeps detective Jared Flynn on his toes. Cozy mysteries are my favorite, and this one is good, with a twist ending that caught me by surprise (the best kind).

Entertaining

This is a clean, entertaining mystery with a lot of quirky characters. The main characters you will meet are KC and her two hysterical aunts who try to help Detective Flynn solve a murder.

I loved this book and would read more from this author.

Fun, cozy mystery

Sisters-in-law, Zula and Fern are a hoot! The retirement community is one hopping place. I enjoyed following them on their sleuthing adventures.

Another offbeat story by Jonathan Stone

First I listened to Moving Day, the story of perfect revenge, which is one of my all time favorite novels. Then came Two for the Show which easily earned 5 stars. Then the wonderful short story Mailman. Then The Teller which started off great and then became insufferable in the second half. And now Days of Night which is a disappointment. My major issue with Days of Night is that fully half of the novel is the protagonist sharing his thoughts in seemingly endless detail. It should have been published as a 4 hour novella to avoid frustrating the listener with irrelevant detain . The story is a nice modern detective murder mystery set at McMurdo Station in Antarctica during the winter. Christopher Lane narrates perfectly.

For Puzzle Lovers

Stone places you inside the story, and with a cop's eye view; doggedly chewing on facts and interested, before you even realize how clever the plot or how good the writing.

Good book

We enjoyed the story very much. The only down side was at times there was way to much description about other things and not just the story.

Might be the best Merrily book yet.

I've been a huge fan of this series for some time, and though I wasn't thrilled with the last book--its a bit of a "transition" novel, necessary in order for the characters to have room to grow, but a bit dark because of this--this one reminds me why I loved the series so much in the first place. And though it ends with all our characters still in transition---Frannie Bliss and Annie Howe in the most shocking way possible--the story is fantastic and we can see a light at the end of the tunnel for all of them. Or at least those who survived the winter's night.

Confusing

Would you try another book from Phil Rickman and/or Emma Powell?

Wearisome overuse of delayed explanation of events. Big stuff happens but not described as it happens, flash forward and then characters explain how it looked and felt to them. Confusing and frustrating.

What could Phil Rickman have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Excellent, had me guessing up to the very end

I've listened to the whole Merrily series narrated by Emma Powell. You may think the books start to struggle when the series goes on. Not at all. One of the best yet! I thought I knew the format and work out who was doing what! Wrong! Emma's narrative is superb as there are a lot different characters to handle! Phil has a lot of subtle sub plots going on with plenty of humour that Emma has picked up on. Thanks for all the books Phil! Keep them coming.

The best Merrily Watkins mystery?

I have listened to all of Phil Rickman's Merrily books. They are all really excellent. This one is definitely one of the best - if not the best. At least one big surprise relating to recurring characters in the series. Very highly recommended but it may help to have listened to OR read books 1 to 13 first!

Emma Powells narration is perfect. Very highly recommended.
