Terrific. Windemere and Stevens are great together

This is the sixth book in this series, and it actually does keep getting better. We get to know both of these people as partners and as individuals, and their teamwork when it comes to solving tough cases is just delightful. Carla is voluble and Kirk is calm, like many of us good, solid mid-Westerners. We don't get ruffled all that easily. We get pulled into the story of yet another serial murderer (why has this become such a gigantic thing lately?) who works the High Line, which is a series of freight trains that speed up and down the rails along the northwestern states of the country. Kids who are kinda lost have begun jumping these trains and riding them back and forth across the coldest climes in the country. Needless to say, there are dangers of all sorts attendant on this kind of hoboish behavior. The girls are at the worst risk. A killer begins stalking them and then killing them, and he racks up quite a scorecard before Windemere and Stevens start getting close to him. Possibly the greatest pleasure for me in this series is the narration of Edoardo Ballerini. I just love this guy. He is so easy to listen to; he never slips up, and he seems to be very calmly in command of his extraordinary talent at all times, no matter how frantic the action becomes. I would listen to him read almost anything, although maybe not the proverbial NYC phone book (isn't that an anachronism by now? Aren't all phone books now subsumed under the web?). Anyway, I digress. Duh. The plot holds you very tightly, and there are many moments when you truly believe that the villain has the upper hand (he truly does at several points). But Carla and Kirk come through in the end, as of course you knew that they would, or else how would there be more books in the serial? As far as I am concerned, Messrs. Laukkenan and Ballerini could well continue to weave these fine stories for years and years into the future. I will be happy indeed to surrender my credits to them, and to Audible. Bravo! Encore!

Laukkanen writes a good series made better by Ballerini

I have enjoyed all of the Windermere and Stevens series. Edoardo Ballerini's stellar narration just makes them that much better.

This book is a police procedural that does not involve super human scenes. It is just a believable story of crime and suspense and a mad man who wants to murder beautiful women because he believes he's been wronged by all beautiful women he has ever tried to spend time with.

Good Plot - Bad Narrator

I enjoyed the plot. The characters are still pretty thin, but there is more fleshing out and I liked cameos from past books. Narrator is still flat, but maybe I'm getting used to it as it didn't bother me as much.

Not Hambling's best

Sophie comes off as a bit too precious. I don't like her smug righteousness. Also didn't care for the narrator's portrayal.

Burried Crimes

Have become quite fond of the characters in this series and enjoy the twists and turns in every episode. Cat Gould is an excellent narrator clear consise clearly capturing the characters personalities . Once again an excellent narration.

Great!

This book provides a unique view of the classical music world, and it's an extra bonus to hear it read and played as an audiobook. Elias' writing is humorous and knowledgeable, and Frangione's voice captures it perfectly. The musical performance adds richness and depth to the story; you really feel like you're there.

The plot of the mystery is truly engaging and reveals to the listener the lesser known facets of familiar places. Who knew the concert hall had such a dark and shadowy side?

Even having read the original, the audiobook was a whole new experience. Definitely worth a listen, whether or not you've read the paper version of Devil's Trill.

It's a great mystery in itself but how unique it is to have the music that is part of the story and to have it played by the author. I love all the Jacobus books and hope this is just the first of the audio versions.

Great Read and listen

Ms Plummer brings this book to life. KJ Howe great 1st time Author. Excellent Book!

Uneven series start but would read the sequel

This is an interesting twist in the thriller genre, and welcome on many levels. But ultimately it thrills less than it should. That said, I'd listen to the sequel. Everything is "decent" or "good" but I never felt my pulse quicken.

A surprise! Never a dull moment!

This was a bargain purchase and in one of my favorite genres. I was pleased to find a complex and fast moving plot. I will try this author again.

Had high hopes for this one, but it was only ok!

I heard an interview with the author, just a couple of days ago, and this, her first thriller novel, sounded really interesting! I'm an avid listener of thrillers/mysteries, and feel that the author followed an already frequently used style of thriller story line! I'm certainly not qualified as a book critic, however, I found this book to be only mildly "thrilling" or interesting! So sorry!

Awesome new author and character.

I loved this one from the beginning. The writing was super and I loved the narrator. Cannot wait for her next book!!

Crazy characters in a crazy world

This first novel in The Naked Eye Series is a very good start. I'm glad I decided to listen to audio rather than read the book because Steven Barnett is a wonderful narrator. He juggled a mild-mannered private eye, an often outraged transsexual, a frightened Asian teenager and a stereotypical Dragon Lady. The story--private eye gets sucked into helping two young women flee a mafia ring of child prostitution and hides them for a time at a nudist resort--is par for the course in a state that has interstates lined with billboards claiming life begins at conception alternating with those hawking the adult store off the next exit. Nicholls takes tips from the masters in creating unique, likeable characters. Brandi, the transsexual formerly known as Brandon, is no doubt going to be every reader's favorite. Noggin is a slow burn; generally likeable but seemingly sheltered and out of his depth for a private eye. I do have a few minor quibbles with the novel:

1. The pace was uneven, most often fast but occasionally it would grind to a halt while Brandi or some other character got up on a soap box to pontificate.

2. Some of the characters, like the evil Dragon Lady as I thought of her, were just too stereotypical, too one-dimensional.

3. While the history of nudism and the nudist resort in particular was interesting, it really slowed the novel down. Some of the history could have been saved for future installments.

4. An Aha moment late in the novel, as Noggin and Brandi solved one particular murder, was underwhelming since the murderer seemed to come from left field.

5. Finally, and this is just a personal observation, I really didn't like how Brandon became Brandi. I liked Brandi a lot and felt very comfortable and fascinated with her integration of her feminine self and her masculine experiences. But the reason why Brandi became Brandon was a disappointing discovery.

All that said, I do recommend this first installment in S.K Nicholls's new The Naked Eye series.

A great new hard boiled detective series

If you could sum up The Last Watchman Still Rides in three words, what would they be?

Very gritty, excellent character development. Superb narration. I recently made a 10 hour drive and this audiobook was the perfect accompaniment.

This is one tough guy!

Beaten, shot, stabbed, and betrayed this guy never quits. This main character is a little dark but still a good guy. Rules don't apply -- if he makes it his mission nothing short of death will stop him. The story was pretty good although it dragged in a few places. I think this is worth a credit and I'll look for sequels.

Solid action thriller

The story is solid and has good action. It follows the popular ex soldier turned detective for hire who is a one man A team. Nothing new here but still a good story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The cab driver. He called his cab service Johnny Cab. You know. From Total Recall.

What does Brian Callanan bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

His gravely and rugged voice was a perfect match for the main character. No way my internal voice could be that.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reaction. I did find that if I skipped a day, listened over the holidays, that it took a bit to get back into. I was all excited at first and then would lose interest. This wasn't the fault of the author or narrator; but, for some reason, despite thoroughly enjoying the book, I often had to force myself to turn it on and not listen to something else. Hopefully that is just me.

I was immediately drawn into the story by Brian's engaging timbre. The story was interesting and full of action and suspense but it's his narration that made this story STELLAR. Definitely looking forward to hearing more from this narrator. Bravo!

I've never read a book like this before.

Think "The Wire" written and directed by Charles Dickens. Erudite, colloquial, but most importantly, an interesting page turner. The story examines a gifted young man's response to loss(es), who matter-of-factly lives in a neighborhood surrounded by violence and risky economy. The story of the present and past are interwoven around the growth and development of a humble hero whose sense of fair play commands respect without violence. While there are guns, blood ,sex, drugs, these are only adjectives to support the story of Isaiah and his friends, and carry it forward. When the book ends, on a completely unexpected and intriguing note, one is left wanting more. Soon! This is one of the best books I've ever read for character development, emotion, and story.

Read this book!

I loved this book. This really is a step away from the hard boiled detective book that you can figure out by page 60. Interesting characters and well written. I read in excess of a hundred books annually and most are just entertainment. While entertaining, this was on a different level. Most of the time, I really don't like to dual timelines and different points of view can be tricky but Joe Ide made it work. I hope the guy writes more books because I want to read them.

Fun amatuer mystery

The audiobook narrator was a perfect fit for this story. I enjoyed the cosy mystery/amateur detective/light and fun feel. It was refreshing to read a story that focussed on the mystery and didn't get complicated by a romance thread. I kept expecting it to turn romantic, which would have disappointed me as the heroine claimed to be happily married. Thankfully, she remained happily married to the end, though got herself caught up in all manner of problems on the way.

This is a great book; this is the first book in the Daisy Dunlop series written by JL Simpson and narrated by Mary Phillips. British female sleuth, Daisy Dunlop, thinks "heir hunting" is her dream job. Too bad she has to work with her worst nightmare, private investigator Solomon Liffey. They've barely spoken since he took her husband's request to keep her safe far too literally and handcuffed her to the kitchen sink. Solomon has no interest in babysitting a new partner, especially this one. The woman's a bleedin' liability. She has no concept of danger and could flirt for England at the next Olympics. As if that isn't bad enough, she has a habit of sticking her nose in where it's not wanted, including into Solomon's very private life. Determined to keep Daisy safely out the way, Solomon sets her the task of finding a missing person. Her investigations land her in the middle of his case. Bullets fly, bombs explode, and the number of murder victims keeps rising. When Solomon goes missing, the tables are turned. Now his life is in Daisy's hands.

The narrator Mary Phillips did a wonderful job with this book. She did a great job with the different voices of each character in this book. It was very easy to listen to and I didnt want to stop listening until the end.

If you are looking for a great book with well-developed characters then you need to listen to this book. I am looking forward to listening to the next book by this author and narrator.

An interesting read full of mystery and humor

At first, it was difficult to 'get into the book' as it seemed to drag on in the beginning.
