Very enjoyable

I thoroughly enjoyed this once I got used to the narrators pace which was just a little too slow. But I got used to it and was thoroughly involved after that. This book was from multiple character points of view. It was was good to get out of the main characters head and experience the other ones. If you like alternate universes with demons and angels this should be pleasure to listen to.

3.5* - Some compelling stories worth listening to

Any additional comments?

Some of the stories in this collection were very compelling, in my opinion. They included: 'Somewhere Only We Know', 'The Devil in the Cavern', 'The Wind From Hell', 'Duke Street's Weeping Widow', 'A Dance With Death', 'Strange Bird of Passage', 'The Waterfront Ghoul', and a few others. I felt that the stories in the second half of the book were generally stronger than the stories in the first half of the book. Short stories aren't my usual cup of tea, so if there are a few stories in a collection that I enjoy, then I have no regrets about investing the time to read/listen to the book. Mission accomplished for this book, then!

On the other hand, some of the stories were frustrating to listen to, usually for one of the following three reasons: First, they weren't what I'd consider to be ghost or paranormal stories. 'Who Killed Julia Wallace' and 'The Man of the Streets' are examples. They're crime stories and doesn't fit into a ghost/paranormal collection. Others sound more like essays (e.g., 'The Summer of the Leprechaun' and 'The Old Swan Mass Grave'), rather than stories because they were so commentary-heavy. These entries weren't necessarily bad, but they didn't fit with the overall theme of the book - my opinion is that they might fit better in a different themed book. The front cover image associated with this audiobook implies (!) that these are ghost-type stories - so my expectation is that I'll be reading spooky stories. I have different mental expectations when I read crime mysteries, so the non-ghost/paranormal stories clashed mentally/emotionally with the rest of the book.

Second, the author seems to be better at setting up stories than concluding them, and for some stories the writing style was almost juvenile ('Marriage Made in Hell' and 'A Picture of Evil' come to mind.).

Title: Club Nexus

Subtitle: Ivy Granger, Psychic Detective

Author: E. J. Stevens

Narrator: Traci Odom

Format: Unabridged

Length: 2 hrs and 23 mins

Language: English

Release date: 06-05-14

Publisher: E.J. Stevens

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 31 votes

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Paranormal

Publisher's Summary:

A demon, an Unseelie faerie, and a vampire walk into a bar...

This Ivy Granger anthology contains short stories set in Club Nexus, the hidden haunt of Harborsmouth's paranormal underworld.

"Iced": A bargain gone wrong leads a highborn Unseelie faerie to life as an enslaved bartender with a taste for revenge.

"Dusted": Being a highly skilled predator doesn't necessarily put you at the top of the food chain at Club Nexus. A southern vampire with a hankering for blood and wanton violence may have bit off more than he can chew.

"Demonized": The demon attorney we love to hate has his eye on a certain rockabilly human. Too bad she's brought a crossbow loaded with holy-water-dipped bolts for this night on the town.

"Jinxed": Just when Jinx needs a carefree girl's night out with Ivy, a smoking-hot demon tries to buy her a drink. She really is the unluckiest human on the planet.

Members Reviews:

Enjoyable addition to the series.

What about Traci Odoms performance did you like?

She has a really pleasant voice to listen to and she pulls you into the story.

Any additional comments?

Club Nexus is 4 short stories about the same incident but in 4 different POVs.

In Iced we have the POV of an Unseelie Faerie who is a slave to the owner of Club Nexus.

In Dusted it's from a Vampires POV.

In Jinxed its from Jinxs POV.

And finally in Demonized its from Froneus POV.

This in itself made the book so enjoyable. I've often wondered what the POV is from other characters, and now I find out!! I thoroughly enjoyed Club Nexus and would highly recommend to fans of the Ivy Granger series.

A few hours in Club Nexus, and we learn the danger

If you could sum up Club Nexus in three words, what would they be?

Jaw dropping events.

Have you listened to any of Traci Odoms other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've listened to Traci in two previous books in this series, and this is the best vocals for different characters yet. She does a wonderful job of slipping into the different characters. She even drops her tone to project a male image with a slight accent.

Any additional comments?

The four stories are all of the same time within Club Nexus but from four different views. Each view brings in new information about the characters and events that take place in Club Nexus. I like how these stories all intersect yet are different and bring us one step further with each ending. We learn something new in the events of the night we are living through.

In listening to these stories, I almost forgot Traci was reading them to me. That's a good thing! The story took over and the narrator blended into the story.

All the stories are in the first person though. But as short stories it works well.

Awesome story. Horrible narrator.

Really been looking forward to this series but the dude reading it almost completely ruins it. Whining, high pitched voice is something you just can't get used too.

B

I'm giving this book a B on the strenght of the two previous books. The first two books were very strong and solid. This one was a bit weak. The ending was a bit rushed and I felt that some of it was a bit drawn out. However, Viguie does a good job of wrapping up all lose ends. I was a bit disappointed but I still enjoyed the book.
