Former private investigator Cèsar Hawke has one rule: He doesn't deal with dead bodies. That's why he enlisted with the Magical Violations Department in the Office of Preternatural Affairs. He's happy tracking down witches that commit petty crimes, but he leaves the homicides to other agents.
Except that he's been assigned to a new team-a team that handles special investigations-and the job has suddenly changed. Now Cèsar has to deal with dead bodies. He also has to deal with necromancers, murderous cults, and demons that can stop a man's heart with fear.
This isn't the job he signed up for, but it's the job he needs to do.

Very Imaginative, Filled With Action & Adventure
Enjoyed the action and adventure. Twists and turns keep your attention. You'll have to stay focused to keep up! Looking forward to the next book in the series.
Something I feel good about recommending.
    Any additional comments?
It's rare that I find a book that's easy and entertaining and something I want to continue.
Along the same lines as Witch Hunt, but I think Mr. Hunt, the protagonist is picking up a little more with each experience. His character is growing, a tiny bit at a time.
I do think it would be a touch more interesting if we hear a little more input from the female characters.
And I do agree with another reviewer: put this in a visually stimulating, special effect tv show/movie and it would rock.
But so did Dresden Files and that didn't last long. Too bad we masses with vastly different tastes have to rely on the few who control what gets made into video and probably do not have enough time to relax with a good book.

There are scratches on Cèsar Hawke's arms, a discharged Glock on his coffee table, and a dead woman in his bathtub. Yeah, maybe he brought the waitress home for some fun-he was too drunk to remember it-but he knows for a fact that he didn't kill her. He's an agent with the Office of Preternatural Affairs. He doesn't hurt people. He saves them.
The cops disagree. Now Cèsar is running.
Isobel Stonecrow speaks with the dead. She brings closure to the bereaved and heals broken hearts. But when she talks to the wrong spirit, the OPA puts a bounty on her head.
Tracking down Isobel is the last case assigned to Cèsar before he bolts. If he finds her, he can prove that he didn't kill that waitress. He can clear his name, get his job back, and bring justice to all those wronged families. She's just one witch.
He's bagged a dozen witches before. How hard can one more be?

    Good But Short!
This book was recommend to me because I like the Harry Desdan series and I was surprised how much I actually liked the story.
The only downside the story is short so scenes change abruptly and you do not get as much details or background information. However, the narrator is awesome so it makes the story great.
    Listen for yourself....
    Any additional comments?
This is the first book in a series and contrary to a recent trend the unfulfilled ending leading into the next book, Witch Hunt can stand on it's own.
I believe it is the characters that make you want to read more. I believe that when a character is written well enough, we just have to know how he treats the next crap thing that happens.
I believe S.M.Reine has done this with Cèsar Hawke. He is smart and very stupid. He is brave and protective. He is a knight in slightly rusty armor. He is the reason I am traveling down the path of this series.
Have you ever had those books that you just want to enjoy? You never get another first read of a good book. I wanted it to last. So I listened to a bit and put it away, repeatedly.
Then, I spent the last hour and a half listening to every word, I couldn't help myself. It reached a point where putting it aside was no longer an option.
This book is funny and twisted and weird in just the right places. It feels like the pilot episode of a good tv show.
I highly recommend taking a few hours and investing. Now, I'm going to bite the Silver Bullet.
I'll listen to the next book.
the story is pretty good, and it kept me guessing till the end. I'll read the next book and decide about the series then.
    Could not turn it off!
This book was so engrossing I wanted to listen to it to the end as soon as I started listening. The story and the performance kept my interest. It was easy to distinguish the characters and there was plenty of action. Get this now! You won't regret it (until you have to turn it off for something as silly as work!)
    Fun
What did you love best about Witch Hunt?
This was a bit Dresden Files like. It was a perfectly entertaining for listening to on a long road trip. I didn't expect much from it when I downloaded it right before I left on a car trip, but it exceeded my expectations. I may end up buying the next one. The narration was perfectly OK.

    Good grief!
Good grief! If I were an author, I would most certainly check that the quality of narration was of first class standard so as not to bring down the quality of something I worked hard on and would never have passed this sad attempt.
I realize that this is my own opinion of what I have just struggled to listen to, but really! Surely I and other paying listeners are entitled to something of a better quality.
The story is aimed at teenagers and as a book, to be read, it has potential, but I most certainly would not recommend the audiobook version.
    Enjoyable story
This book was a bit too sweet for my taste. It has a good story, but every time it seemed as if things were going to get more exciting,. I felt let down.
    A Curse!!
This short story is a wonderful story although it is short with a cliffhanger. Author Kristen Middleton has written a fantastic story. I loved the storyline and the characters very much. The story is fast paced and even fun at times. Kendra and Kala are twin sisters but are very much different in many ways. Kendra struggles alot, feeling like she doesn't belong, she thinks she's not pretty, and she believes she has issues with her weight. But, when Kendra meets Tyler, the new boy at school he shows her attention and he seems to genuinely like her. Her twin Kala seems to have it all, friends, she's pretty, and everyone likes her. The more time Kendra and Tyler spend together the more she earns about herself. Kendra grows in this story from what seems like a young girl to a more stronger, confident young lady. During the time that Tyler spends with Kendra he let's her in on a secret that turns her life upside down. Kendra and Kala are both witches and not only are they witches but their mom is a witch also. What they didn't know is their mom is a witch to, and not only is she a witch but she has a twin sister as well and their mom has a curse that's been placed on her. It's up to Kendra and Kala to break this curse. Their aunt Viviane practices black magic and believes if her twin sister were to die that she'll gain her power as well. The girl's mom has never practiced black magic, she only uses white magic, good magic and has never even used her magic around the girl's. Kristen has written an amazing story, I found it very etertaining, and funny at times. It's tense, especially the last half of the story. The story is filled with suspense, emotion, and intrigue.
Narrator, Elizabeth Meadows does a great job with her narration of this story. I thought she did a superb job with her performance. I felt her connection with the characters and it helped me bond with them. I found it easy to identify with all the characters from the different accents that Meadows gives them. This story is worth your time and you should get this audio now. You have nothing to lose but a great story to gain.

    Drummer Boy
    By Scott Nicholson
On an Appalachian Mountain ridge, young Vernon Ray Davis hears the rattling of a snare drum deep inside a caveknown as "The Jangling Hole", and the wind carries a whispered name. According to legend, the Hole is home to a group of Civil War soldiers buried by a long-ago avalanche. Everyone, especially Vernon Ray's dad, laughs at him...because he's different.
On the eve of an annual Civil War reenactment, the town of Titusville prepares for a mock battle. But inside the Hole, disturbed spirits are rising from their dark slumber, and one of them is heading home.
And Vernon Ray stands between the battle lines of the living and the dead, caught between a world where he doesn't belong and a world from which he can never return...
From the author of The Red Church and Speed Dating with the Dead comes a poignant coming-of-age tale of supernatural mystery and suspense.

Dummer Boy is the second in a series following The Red Church. The setting is in Titusville somewhere on the Appalachian Mountain Ridge. This area is deeply committed to its historic past of battles during the Civil War. Residents of this town are poor and stereo-typical back hills redneck types. The story centers around the civil war and its victims of long ago who still can be found near the Jangling Hole.
Several people have fallen victim to the Jangling Hole and its spirit inhabitants. The Hole is stirred up when the mountain is slated to be a huge housing development. The spirits manifest and visit several residents who have ties to the long dead men. Within these residents is a young boy Vernon Ray Davis who does not belong in the world of his father (although he longs for it) and does not belong in the world of the Jangling Hole residents.
Vernon Ray Davis and his friends have multiple encounters with these spirits but ultimately, no one can save Vernon. He is faced with joining a world whose inhabitants have accepted him and given him what he has longed for respect, and a coveted role of drummer boy or continue in the world where his father mocks and openly hates him. the jangling hole and its residents resonant with the rat-a-tat of the snare drum from the dead drummer boy who needs to be replaced.
Officer Littlefield who was predominant in the first book The Red Church is not as involved as he is always a day late and a dollar short.
The book had some harsh language but given the demographic it is written about, it only makes it more realistic. The plot and characters were well developed and believable.
The narrator, Milton Bagby did an excellent job of reading the book. He spoke clearly and concisely.

    Great PNR start!
I'll admit I purchased this book for the narrator. I love J.Parker's narration and look for any books she's done. A wonderful surprise is that this book was awesome! I loved the story, characters and narration. There's vamps, weres, etc, sexual tension, great concept for a genre that's one of my favorites and for what appears to be a series. I downloaded book 2 before I finished the first. Well worth the credit or the price. Hope it continues past book 2 and with J.Parker narration. :) I'll be following this author and this series for more.
Love the story, character, narrator overall great
What did you love best about Cursed?
Strong smart female character...so tired of books that characterize female leads as super idiots. It's funny and witty
What about Johanna Parkers performance did you like?
Isn't she t voice for sookie stackhouse?
    Any additional comments?
Yes please S. J. Harper please write more books and faster I need series for this onset and please have them be Same quality.
    Lots of Greek mythology
From the first few moments of the book, I was completely captured. The story line will pique your curiosity and make it difficult to put the book down. I had this book on my wish list for a while, thinking the story would be like all the other paranormal romance novels. Fortunately the story line is part mystery, intrigue and crime show sandwiched between Greek mythology and love story. I managed to finish the book in 2 days, while working full time! I liked the speed with with the reader spoke, while I almost always listen at 1.25, I was able to enjoy this book at 1!
Siren & the Shifter: Great Team
I loved the narrator as Sookie Stackhouse and it took me a couple of chapters to forget Sookie, but once it got going, I really enjoyed her as Emma & Zack.
FBI agents Emma Monroe and Zack Armstrong are investigating a series of missing persons. The only connection seems to be the missing persons are closet vampires (the public is unaware of vampires).
Emma is a Siren and Zack is werewolf. So they have to rely on the supernatural nature to solve this crime but it is definitely a complicated case. Then throw in the fact that you have a sexy seductress with a carnal shape-shifter and sparks are flying everywhere.
I found the writing to be smooth and the story very interesting.

    a really fun, sexy story
This imaginative story is really fun to listen to. While the sex isn't terribly explicit, the idea of the magical sex taking place is great. It has a lot of humor, and the storyline is great, and the narration is excellent and easy to listen to. I can't wait to hear book 2 in the series.

    Publisher's Summary:
1815 - Marseille Edmond Dantes is young, in love with the beautiful Mercedes, and has just been named the captain of the merchant vessel, Pharaon. It seems as if there is nothing but happiness and prosperity in the young man's future. Unfortunately, Edmond's success has brought jealous enemies. Danglars wants his career and Fernand wants his fiancée. The two conspire against Edmond and frame him for treason.
He is brought before Prosecutor deVillefort, who recognizes his innocence. Unfortunately, the Prosecutor is a man with his own secrets and he fears that freeing Edmond could bring them to light. He convicts Edmond and has him imprisoned in a dungeon from which no man has ever escaped.
1830 - The Château d'If After fifteen years in his tiny cell, Edmond nearly loses his sanity. Then he meets a fellow prisoner, the brilliant scholar and mystic Abbé Faria. The two become close and Faria teaches Edmond languages, science, philosophy, and sorcery. Using his occult skills of divination he reveals the conspiracy. Faria hopes the revelation will give Edmond a sense of peace but instead it fires his desire for vengeance.
When Faria falls ill and dies, Edmond breaks his promise to his friend and turns to the darkest form of magic. He makes a pact with an unspeakable entity to help him escape and give him the power to destroy his enemies. Edmond Dantes dies in the Château d'If and is reborn as a vampire, an undead creature who hungers for revenge as much as he thirsts for blood.
1838 - Paris The wealthy and mysterious Count of Monte Cristo arrives in Paris. He is an eccentric who is never seen eating or drinking and refuses to venture out in the daylight. Rumors abound that the Count is a vampire, but this only adds to the charismatic stranger's mystique. He becomes the center of Parisian society, seducing the entire city with his charm including all of Edmond Dantes' enemies.
Things have changed in the years since Edmond was framed and his enemies have prospered. Danglers is now a banker and one of the richest men on the continent; deVillefort is the highest legal official in France; worst of all, Fernand--now a general and a war hero--is married to Mercedes.
The Count plays a dangerous game, turning his dark arts to the destruction of these powerful men, and even their innocent children are caught up in his byzantine schemes. Will the innocent perish along with the guilty? And what of Edmond Dantes? Will he find redemption, or will he be swept up and destroyed by the very forces he has invoked?

    A Masterpiece Destroyed
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
While I understand the newly found interest in reviving great works by incorporating supernatural aspects (i.e. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, etc), this work was disgraceful. Rather than working changes more consistently and interestingly into the work, Matthew Baugh has butchered the underlying characteristics of this work of art, as if attempting to recreate a Da Vinci painting using brown crayons and a pack of lobotomized monkeys.

    Members Reviews:
Great story. Not for kids or YA.
I adored this book and the thought that went into it. I was a little surprised by the teen drinking and blatant drug use but wasn't put off.
Thus is a gritty story of a girl who is persecuted by her peers and a popular girl who becomes obsessed with torturing her.
They both have supernatural powers. They both want the same boy. SOMEONE PLEASE GO BACK AND EDIT THIS AUDIOBOOK! AUDIBLE YOU SHOULD BE PAYING BETTER ATTENTION. The atrocious audio editing almost ruined a wonderful story. At one point the repetition is so bad I forgot what they were talking about.
    This recording needs an editor
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
    Editing. See narration comment below.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The premise was a break from the common story line.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Ashlyn Selich?
Only if the narrator gets an editor. There are multiple locations where the narrator repeats a line in an attempt to get a better reading. Unfortunately the earlier versions are not removed. This gets very annoying when the narrator repeats the same line 3 or 4 times.
    Any additional comments?
Many young adult novels can appeal to adults too. Unless you want to relive the worst parts of high school, this is not recommended for those who were not in the cool or popular crowd. The memories this book brought out are far from pleasant.
    Be Careful
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
There are a few problems with this audio adaptation - there are spots where sentences are repeated (sometimes two or three times), with the narrator doing alternate takes, or retakes - these needed to be edited out, as it does ruin the experience somewhat.
These are predominantly in the first half of the book, though do continue throughout.
The Paranormals is a great series, but I wouldn't recommend this as an entry point.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Jenny Pox?
The climax is horrifying, and very visceral - it's not something that will leave you quickly.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Ashlyn Selich?
I find her to be an adequate narrator, though one needing to work more closely with an editor, due to the issues listed above.
    Not for me
What would have made Jenny Pox better?
This story was about high school students, it had way too much drug use, sexual situations & teen pregnancies (as a result of a church function!).
What could JL Bryan have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
    Left out all the drugs!
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
I had no complaints about the performance, just what she was performing.
    Any additional comments?
I am really disappointed in this story.

    Great ghostly adventure
A interesting, suspenseful and imaginative story intertwining present day with Ancient Egypt. The author's story is centred around the mysterious disappearance from history of King Tut's wife and the death of Nephertiti and her children, it is a tale of discovery set in the modern day but interweaved with ghostly happening and visions of the past. The narrator did a good job of expressing emotion but I would have liked more delineation between the different characters and male and female voices. This story has intrigue, mystery, romance, suspense, great historical facts and even some occult, all wound together in an enjoyable ghostly adventure. I received the audiobook in exchange for my honest opinion.
Another solid read by this author!
In the same vein as Egyptian Heart as far as time (Pharaonic/modern), and explores Nefertiti in greater depth. Characters are believable and well developed. Story moves along well, and maintains reader's interest easily.
KC Cowan does a creditable job if audio interpretation, but a little too laid back for my personal taste.
Fascinating book for those interested in Egypt
I really enjoyed this book. I listened to the Audible version, and even though I don't remember the narrator differentiating between voices as much as I usually like, I still enjoyed her narration. Maybe because it just felt like someone reading a book to me, without trying too hard, so it seemed effortless. I would actually listen to more books narrated by KC Cowan for this reason.
I liked the story a lot, too. I'm interested in anything pertaining to Egypt, and that is what originally made me choose this book. It was an interesting, Egyptian, paranormal mystery that read steadily and kept me engaged. One thing I found refreshing about this book is the relationship between the main characters: Faye and her husband Nick. It was nice to read a book about a married couple that loved each other, were passionate, and had a good relationship (despite Faye's idiosyncrasies like seeing ghosts). I would definitely check out more books by this author, and recommend this book to anyone who likes paranormal books or has a fascination with Egypt.
