Title: The Contemplative Journey: Volume 2
Subtitle: Contemplation and Transformation from Christianity's Mystical Tradition
    Author: Thomas Keating
    Narrator: Thomas Keating
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 37 mins

    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
In the darkest hour of the darkest age, Christian monks developed a meditation tradition unique in the Western world. A 14th-century author described their profound mystical experience as entering the cloud of unknowing. Yet during the 500 years after this great monastic flowering, this precious tradition - and the direct path to union with God it described - was virtually lost.
For decades Father Thomas Keating, together with other monks, examined this great question: Could anyone enter the cloud of unknowing through a prayer practice specifically created to attain it? Keating reached back in time for clues about the prayer forms of the Christian mystics. He synthesized his work into a Centering Prayer method that has helped thousands of seekers travel the contemplative path to divine union.
From infancy, Father Keating teaches, we accumulate emotional layers, or programs, as a result of traumatic experiences. The practice of Centering Prayer engages directly with the unconscious and loosens old traumas that hinder your spiritual development. This form of divine therapy draws from a contemplative method that has brought profound inner transformation into the lives of thousands of practitioners. The Contemplative Journey is Father Thomas Keating's great masterwork: a complete curriculum devoted to a Christian path for achieving the still point of resting in God.

    The Lord is Amazing
This Spiritual Journey was for me particularly intense.
The background given by Father Keating on the various models: evolutionary, existential, philosophical and developmental psychology is fundamental to preparing oneself for the Journey.
The Holy Spirit has worked wonders, is working wonders and accompanies the willing souls on ever higher levels of consciousness.
Father Keating's knowledge of the Contemplative Journey is evidently deep and his voice and the way he presents the talks are very pleasing.
An outstanding audiobook highly recommended for people seeking a much deeper relationship with God.

    Great content!
I have a deeper understanding of the role of suffering in our lives after listening to this book.
    Finally on Audiobook
What made the experience of listening to Surprised by Suffering the most enjoyable?
I've started reading this one but often get too busy to finish. This is a great reminder that the Christian life is not always happy and there is suffering but God continues to be there through it all.
Which character as performed by George W. Sarris was your favorite?
I like that he does change his voice more books should be read this way it's helpful when there are stories within the narrative.
    Any additional comments?
I think the is one of my favorites. It's not the happy book as the title also indicates but it is a blessing to know that God is sovereign and he is always there through good an bad. And the suffering has a heavenly purpose.

    Publisher's Summary:
People are leaving the church J. D. Greear pastors. Big givers. Key volunteers. Some of his best leaders and friends. And that's exactly how he wants it to be.
When Jesus gave his disciples the Great Commission, he revealed that the key for reaching the world with the Gospel is found in sending, not gathering. Though many churches focus time and energy on attracting people and counting numbers, the real mission of the church isn't how many people you can gather. It's about training up disciples and then sending them out. The true measure of success for a church should be its sending capacity, not its seating capacity.
But there is a cost to this. To see ministry multiply, we must release the seeds God has placed in our hands. And to do that, we must ask ourselves whether we are concerned more with building our kingdom or God's.
In Gaining by Losing, J. D. Greear unpacks 10 plumb lines that you can use to reorient your church's priorities around God's mission to reach a lost world. The good news is that you don't need to choose between gathering and sending. Effective churches can and must do both.

Definitely puts the gospel in perspective.
Great. The narrator reading was tough to grasp, but that could be because I've heard JD speak before. The book was awesome and helps you truly understand that you must be ready to serve Jesus even if it cost you everything simply because you truly love God.
Essential reading for the survival of the Church
For 100 years the Church has locked itself behind ornate doors. We now need to return to the Great Commission and go! This book provides great insight into reaching out, building out, and exponential church growth. Required reading for my staff.

  • Ordinary Audiobook by Michael Horton

    Title: Ordinary
Subtitle: Sustainable Faith in a Radical, Restless World
    Author: Michael Horton
    Narrator: Michael Horton
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 17 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-14-15
    Publisher: Zondervan
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 59 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
Radical. Crazy. Transformative and restless. Every word we read these days seems to suggest there's a "next-best-thing", if only we would change our comfortable, compromising lives. In fact, the greatest fear most Christians have is boredom - the sense that they are missing out on the radical life Jesus promised. One thing is certain. No one wants to be "ordinary".
Yet pastor and author Michael Horton believes that our attempts to measure our spiritual growth by our experiences, constantly seeking after the next big breakthrough, have left many Christians disillusioned and disappointed. There's nothing wrong with an energetic faith; the danger is that we can burn ourselves out on restless anxieties and unrealistic expectations. What's needed is not another program or a fresh approach to spiritual growth; it's a renewed appreciation for the commonplace.
Far from a call to low expectations and passivity, Horton invites listeners to recover their sense of joy in the ordinary. He provides a guide to a sustainable discipleship that happens over the long haul - not a quick fix that leaves listeners empty with unfulfilled promises.
Convicting and ultimately empowering, Ordinary is not a call to do less; it's an invitation to experience the elusive joy of the ordinary Christian life.

To live the life you have been called to live
This is a thought provoking book to the point of bringing about action as a result of changes brought about by living life through the ordinary means of grace.
The Fish is Made Aware of the Water
There's a saying (I don't know the origin) about how fish don't know they are in water even though they eat, sleep, breathe and spend every moment of their lives in the water...
This book has made me aware of the water. It's difficult to express just how much this book opened my eyes. I so completely bought into our culture's obsession with "radical" living that when I first read the title and synopsis, I thought it was a joke...some sort of satirical riff. But I'm so thankful that for whatever reason, I dove in anyway. Down the road, I imagine that I will look back and discover that this book has marked me.
    Made the plain life live
One of my favorite theologians on paper, radio, and at conferences, Dr. Horton delivered a nice book on how ordinary actually has a lot more going than just being normal.
Described in the book a normal ordinary life takes on much more prestige when presented In the God honoring way that Dr. Horton does.
I also felt it was actually helpful to absorb the info in this book on talking through some differences with our charismatic brothers and sisters as well.
    A Good Overview
Ordinary focused on the individual in all aspects of life. Horton did not advocate for the individual to live his or her life to do something extraordinary for Christ but instead live in the moment looking how to best serve those in front of our faces. Horton did not condemn those who are called to seemingly higher forms of service, but rather gave a picture of how it takes many individuals serving in different capacities to make up a church. I believe the book could have been condensed in some places and still had the same message.
    Working as a Christian
If you are wondering what you are called to be or to do as a Christian this is a great place to start.

    Publisher's Summary:
Could you retain your faith even if it meant losing your life? Your family's lives?
To many Christians in the Middle East today, a "momentary, light affliction" means enduring only torture instead of martyrdom. The depth of oppression Jesus' followers suffer is unimaginable to most Western Christians. Yet it is an everyday reality for those who choose faith over survival in Syria, Iran, Egypt, Lebanon, and other countries hostile to the Gospel of Christ.
In Killing Christians Tom Doyle takes listeners to the secret meetings, the torture rooms, the grim prisons, and even the executions that are the "calling" of countless Muslims turned Christians. All survivors long to share with brothers and sisters "on the outside" what Christ has taught them. Killing Christians is their message to listeners who still enjoy freedom to practice their faith. None would wish their pain and suffering on those who do not have to brave such misery, but the richness gained through their remarkable trials are delivered--often in their own words--through this audiobook. The stories are breathtaking, the lessons soul stirring and renewing. Killing Christians presents the dead-serious work of expanding and maintaining the faith.

    Necessary for the heart
Stunning, breathtaking stories that display the majesty & beauty of Christ against the darkest of backdrops. You will love, weep, & pray fervently for each beautiful person whose story you hear. Books such as these are vital for us western Christians it is almost shameful how complacent & whiney we are, spoiled in our comforts, & often even self-centered in our very faith. These books serve to connect us heart and soul to our persecuted family & drive us to service & action. Every church in America should continually urge its members to make a steady reading diet of books and articles of the persecuted church.
    Informative, encouraging & convicting
I loved this book. It was well put-together and gives a real sense of the very real people living in that part of the world. Very informative. I thought it might feel sensationalized but it didn't feel that way at all to me when I read it. While some of the things in it were difficult to hear, keeping our head in the sand does not help anyone...us or those in the 'battleground' of the Middle East. The battleground might one day be here in the U.S. (it already is to a small extent) and we need to be firm on where we stand. This book is great for helping give you that moral courage. These Christians are facing unimaginable trials, pain & death everyday and they consider themselves blessed because they know they are doing the Lord's work! We can all learn from these dedicated followers of our Lord Jesus Christ! God Bless!
    Very moving
This book enlightened me to what our fellow believers are going through quickening my heart to pray for them. It also caused me to search my own heart. God is God through all things! Written very well and read very well.

    Publisher's Summary:
We often wonder what Jesus will ask us when we meet Him face to face. We believe that some of his first questions will be about discipleship. How have we followed His Great Commission to make disciples? How many disciples did we raise up to do greater things than we ourselves achieved? Who "imitates our lives as we imitate Christ"? Jesus did not command us to build the church; He called us to make disciples.
Effective discipleship creates the church, not the other way around. This is the first of many new Huddle resources that will give you practical and Biblical insights on building a culture of discipleship in your community.

  • Wrestling the Angel Audiobook by Terryl L. Givens

    Title: Wrestling the Angel
Subtitle: The Foundations of Mormon Thought: Cosmos, God, Humanity

    Narrator: B.J. Harrison
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 17 hrs and 21 mins

    Release date: 12-30-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 180 votes
    Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity
    Publisher's Summary:
In this first volume of his magisterial study of the foundations of Mormon thought and practice, Terryl L. Givens offers a sweeping account of Mormon belief from its founding to the present day. Situating the relatively new movement in the context of the Christian tradition, he reveals that Mormonism continues to change and grow. Givens shows that despite Mormonism's origins in a biblical culture strongly influenced by 19th-century Restorationist thought, which advocated a return to the Christianity of the early Church, the new movement diverges radically from the Christianity of the creeds.
Mormonism proposes its own cosmology and metaphysics, in which human identity is rooted in a premortal world as eternal as God. Mormons view mortal life as an enlightening ascent rather than a catastrophic fall, and reject traditional Christian concepts of human depravity and destiny. Popular fascination with Mormonism's social innovations, such as polygamy and communalism, and its supernatural and esoteric elements - angels, gold plates, seer stones, a New World Garden of Eden, and sacred undergarments - have long overshadowed the fact that it is the most enduring and even thriving product of the 19th century's religious upheavals and innovations.
Wrestling the Angel traces the essential contours of Mormon thought from the time of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young to the contemporary LDS church, illuminating both the seminal influence of the founding generation of Mormon thinkers and the significant developments in the church over almost 200 years. The most comprehensive account of the development of Mormon thought ever written, Wrestling the Angel will be essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the Mormon faith.
    Members Reviews:
A comprehensive review of Mormon theology
With references from antiquity, literature, and theology, Givens provides acomprehensive review of Mormon theology, showing where it fits into the stream of intellectual and theological thought. Mormons believe in a universe organized out of existing materials and deny the theory of ex nihilo creation. Similarly, Joseph Smith's theology was not created "out of nothing" but out of the existing threads of thought or sometimes in opposition or response to existing theologies. Was Mormonism a response to Calvinism? Yes. Did Mormonism partake of the Universalist impulse? Yes. did Mormonism contain several elements rejected in early Christianity? Absolutely.
Mormons believe that any statement given under the power of the Holy Ghost is authoritative, even scriptural. They have dozens of general authorities who make sometimes conflictingpronouncements. This makes Mormon theology sometimes difficult to pin down. Givens relies primarily on Joseph Smith, as the expounder a Mormon theology. Brigham Young, the Pratt Brothers James E Talmage and BH Roberts are secondary. Bruce R McConkie and Joseph Fielding Smith are hardly relied on at all. Some will take issue with given choices.
    Academic, Excellent, mostly good narration
Would you listen to Wrestling the Angel again? Why?
Yes. It's pretty dense and I love the way that Givens draws the threads through historical Christian thought and shows both the connections between Mormonism and Christian history as well as the doctrinal innovations of Mormonism and how they came about.
    What about B.J.
