Fantastic read
What another great book from Mr Griffiths!!! Not like his other ones, but just as good. Basically it tells you of one small boys life and how he takes the wrong path because of a tragic accident when he was young. The whole family falls apart and he leaves home when he can, then takes all the wrong paths and makes bad choices through the rest of his life. There still is a twist at the end. Very well written as always with strong characters. Not as long as author usually writes , but it is just as gripping. Very sad in a lot of places. A fantastic read, keep them coming lol!!!
I really enjoyed this
Having read Mr Griffith's horror novels, which I loved, I found this a really enjoyable change. The protagonist, Gavin, held the story together beautifully. The tale was poignant, sad, and thought provoking. There is a time shifting aspect to this, which I found very interesting and perfectly placed within the story.
When Gavin's brother dies in a road traffic accident, he and his family fall apart. Sounds predictable but it isn't. It is a clever plot, full of dark and raw emotions.
I wish it had been longer but I think that the length was exactly what is was meant to be.
Recommended. 5 stars from me.
.
A Cautionary Tale of Obsession.
This was an excellent novella by Griffiths. I found his style of storytelling very engaging and intimate.
The story centers on a young man Gavin, whose life, emotions and actions have been defined by the tragic death of his younger brother, when Gavin was eleven. We follow Gavin's progression through drink, drugs and violence, to its inevitable conclusion.
I like this author's style and would be prepared to read more of his work.
A Change Of Pace For Griffiths - Outstanding
"A Life for a Life", by Colin Griffiths is an outstanding novel. It is a change of pace for Griffiths, who is an excellent horror writer. This is not a horror story, like his book, "Doll's House". "A Life for a Life" is a very touching book and at times, very sad.
The story is about Gavin, a boy, who looses Damien, his younger brother, in an awful accident. Damien was run over by a taxi cab after he ran out in to the street. Damien's death tore the family apart. The family was never the same again.
As an adult, Gavin kidnaps Scott Williams, the man who ran over Damien. He puts him in a deserted warehouse room and tells him his entire story. It is through this story that we learn what happened to the family. Gavin turned to drugs and always got in to fist fights. He moved around a lot. Other family members went different ways in their lives. Gavin took Damien's death very hard. He swears that Damien has appeared before him, offering comfort. Gavin met a large cast of characters as he moved from place to place. We learn a lot about all them as the story progresses. The ending was a bit predictable.
This book is very well written. As Gavin tells his story, you will be moved and touched. Many times, you will be moved to tears. You will come to love Gavin. Gavin and the other characters are very well developed.
