pDuring a murder investigation in Cardiff, police officer Gwen Cooper spies on a group of five people called Torchwood, led by Captain Jack Harkness, exiting an SUV. One member, Suzie, uses a metal gauntlet to temporarily bring the victim to life and talk to him. Gwen flees when Jack notices her. The next day, Gwen runs into Jack again at a hospital and, following him, finds a sealed-off area where Jack catches a Weevil./ppbr/ppAs she escapes, Gwen follows the Torchwood SUV to Roald Dahl Plass, where she loses sight of them. Discovering a local pizza store makes regular deliveries to Torchwood, Gwen disguises herself as a pizza delivery girl. Monitoring her actions, Torchwood willingly let her into their underground hub. Jack shows Gwen around the hub, including the captured Weevil from the hospital. They then leave the hub via a pavement slab lift, which takes them to Roald Dahl Plass in front of the Millennium Centre; the slab makes anyone standing on it unnoticed to passersby./ppbr/ppOver drinks, Jack explains that Torchwood is one of several branches, including Torchwood One which was destroyed at Canary Wharf.[N 1] They catch #34;tons#34; of aliens and scavenge alien technology that are washed up through a rift in space and time that runs through Cardiff, while preventing others from obtaining them. Jack places an amnesia pill in Gwen#39;s drink, leaving her with no memory of the meeting./ppbr/ppThe next day at work, Gwen is shown a drawing of the murder weapon, which triggers a series of memories. These solidify when she spots a Millennium Centre programme with the word #34;Remember#34; in her own handwriting at home. Outside the Millennium Centre, Suzie explains she killed the man Gwen saw resurrected to test the gauntlet. Suzie pulls a gun on Gwen as she is the only one that can link Suzie to the murder weapon. Jack rises from the pavement lift, and Suzie turns and shoots him in the head. Jack then comes back to life. With no chance of escape, Suzie shoots herself in the head. Gwen now remembers everything./ppbr/ppThe gauntlet is sealed away. Standing on the roof of the Millennium Centre, Jack tells Gwen that he died once, but was brought back to life,[N 2] and that he can never die. pAstronaut Colonel Adam Cook crash lands on a strange planet 4.3 light years away from his sun, with gravity and atmospheric conditions similar to those of his home world. Most of his equipment is destroyed in the crash and cannot be repaired due to a lack of resources and his having broken some ribs. He contacts his home base and speaks with a subordinate officer and then with General Larrabee, but they have little encouragement for him — there is no replacement spacecraft to rescue him, and his home planet may be at war in a matter of hours. However, Larrabee does add that it may be possible to transmit instructions on how to repair the ship./ppbr/ppIn a subsequent communication, Larrabee reports that the enemy attacked and #34;our entire seacoast went#34; in 12 minutes after which there was retaliation #34;with alacrity and great effectiveness.#34; Those at base will have to move soon, meaning Cook will have no one to contact./ppbr/ppCook leaves his ship at night and finds drawn patterns in the dirt. While looking for the source, he is hit by a rock from an unseen source, and knocked unconscious, causing him to not hear Larrabee#39;s last transmission that radiation from the attacks will kill any remaining survivors and ends with the words, #34;Whoever you meet there, however you meet them, I hope it can come without fear. I hope it can come without anger. I hope your new world will be different. I hope you#39;ll find no word such as hate. I hope there#39;ll be...#34;./ppbr/ppUpon regaining consciousness, Cook returns to his ship and is startled by a noise coming from a closet. Cook leaves the ship as a gesture showing that he means the alien no harm. A human-like female emerges from his ship. Not knowing each other#39;s languages, they communicate through sketches in the sand and pantomime. Adam learns that the alien, whose name is Norda, is also stranded; her planet left its orbit and she is its sole survivor. As they prepare to look for food, Cook picks up a stick, which Norda interprets as a threat. She scratches his face and runs away./ppbr/ppSoon after, Norda returns and expresses remorse for her actions, which Cook happily forgives. They find a more fertile area, which Cook likens to a #34;garden.#34; He fully introduces himself as #34;Adam Cook,#34; a man with a broken arm and a broken rib. Norda gives her full name as #34;Eve Norda#34;. Adam and Eve begin a new life on this planet she calls #34;Earth#34;. At this point she offers him a #34;seppla#34; (an anagram of the word #34;apples#34;, which are artistically depicted as the biblical forbidden fruit). pLister makes a video explaining how the crew survived their battle with their future selves. If the future crew had killed their former selves, they would have eliminated their own existence, and therefore not have been able to destroy themselves: a temporal paradox. Therefore, time has reset to a point before the crew picked up the time drive. Lister#39;s explanation is too convoluted for the video camera to handle and it explodes. Kryten dismisses the whole incident as #34;garbled#34; and more #34;boring than an in-flight magazine produced by Air Belgium.#34;/ppbr/ppUnfortunately disaster has struck – Starbug is still damaged from the battle and as a consequence all the Indian food supplies have been destroyed; not even a single papadum survived. Lister proposes that the crew obtain the time drive again and go back in time to an Indian take-away and order 500 curries. Rimmer, Cat and Kryten are against the idea and oppose going back in time, having seen the kind of people they could possibly become. Lister argues that they can use a time drive and avoid that consequence if they don#39;t abuse it like their future selves did; however he finds himself outnumbered and seemingly concedes defeat./ppbr/ppThat night, Kryten shuts down so he can delete his unnecessary cache files to create more memory space. However, Lister swaps Kryten#39;s head for one of his spare heads and removes the guilt chip from it, having the now guiltless Kryten reassure the crew that it will be okay. The next morning, Rimmer and Cat are confused when Kryten serves them high-calorie breakfasts, starts smoking and using phrases like #34;you bet your ass#34;. However, when Kryten assures them it#39;ll be ok to pick up the time drive the two assent and board the ship containing it, intending to go back to the 21st Century to one of Lister#39;s favourite curry houses to pick up a large order./ppbr/ppTheir time travel calculations are a little off and they find themselves in Dallas, Texas on 22 November 1963. They appear at the Texas School Book Depository just as Lee Harvey Oswald is firing at U.S. President John F. Kennedy. Having inadvertently knocked him out the window onto the window ledge, they accidentally cause Oswald to fall to his death below when he tries to re-enter the Depository, thereby preventing Kennedy#39;s assassination. Confronted by the local police who believe that they are part of Oswald#39;s assassination attempt, the crew use the time travel device to go three years forward to 1966./ppbr/ppThe crew find Dallas deserted. Wandering the streets, they find a man who has been trampled to death, indicating people left in a hurry. Reading a nearby newspaper, Kryten finds out what has happened:/ppbr/ppPresident Kennedy was impeached in 1964 for sharing a mistress with Mafia boss, Sam Giancana. It was the biggest scandal in American history. Kennedy was sentenced to three years in an open prison in July, #39;65. J. Edgar Hoover became president; he was forced to run by the mob, who had pictures of him at a transvestite orgy...Soon after his election, the USSR were allowed to install a nuclear base in Cuba in return for Mafia cocaine trafficking between Cuba and the States. With a Soviet nuclear base 30 miles from the US mainland, people fled from all the major cities./ppbr/ppAs the Soviets likely won the Space Race in this alternate timeline, #34;Starbug#34; no longer exists and the crew can not return to the present. The crew attempt to correct the situation by returning to the day of the shooting and driving Oswald to a higher floor in the building, but this plan still fails to lead to Kennedy#39;s death; by sending Oswald up another floor, they made the shot#39;s trajectory so steep that Kennedy was merely wounded. Being unable to send Oswald to a lower floor due to their presence, Lister suggests getting a second gunman to shoot from behind a nearby grassy knoll. With none of the crew willing to shoot the President themselves, Lister travels to Idlewild Airport in 1965 and persuades a post-impeachment Kennedy to travel back to 1963, become a #34;second gunman#34; on the grassy knoll, and shoot himself to restore his place in history. The plan works: Kennedy shoots his past self and the timeline is restored. Kennedy grimly thanks the gang for the chance to restore himself to his proper place in history, and fades away as a result of the resetting timeline. Lister, too late, realises he forgot to ask Kennedy for the names of any good Indian take-aways in Dallas. For tax reasons, all the company funds are held in Peggy#39;s name, so she tells Charlie that she is going to #39;get a job#39;, then uses the money to establish a rival company, GlamCabs. The cars are brand new Ford Cortina Mk1s driven by attractive girls in provocative uniforms. Flo, the wife of one of Charlie#39;s drivers, is appointed to the post of office manager./ppbr/ppCharlie continues to coach his mainly inept drivers, including the clumsy Terry #34;Pintpot#34; Tankard (Charles Hawtrey), whilst Peggy refuses to tell Charlie about her new job. Charlie feigns a lack of interest, but he is dying to know what she is up to, particularly as he gets a taste of his own medicine because she now works long hours. He struggles to cope while Peggy#39;s company becomes a thriving success due to the large number of male taxi passengers preferring to ogle her sexy drivers during journeys. Speedee rapidly starts losing money and faces bankruptcy. Peggy feels terrible for what she has done. Charlie and his drivers attempt to sabotage the rival company, but they are chased off./ppbr/ppIn desperation, Charlie suggests a merger with his rivals, but is furious to discover who the real owner is and storms off./ppbr/ppA month later, Peggy is living at the office and Charlie has turned to drink, allowing his company to collapse around him. Peggy and Sally (Liz Fraser) are hijacked by gangsters. Peggy manages to use the taxi radio to subtly reveal their situation and location. Charlie intercepts the broadcast and rallies the other Speedee drivers in pursuit. pThe world has entered a Cold War-like setting in which nuclear holocaust appears imminent. In the hope of staving off an apocalyptic military confrontation between nations, an idealistic group of scientists working at United Labs plans to stage a fake alien invasion of Earth in an effort to unite all humanity against a perceived common enemy. The scientists have managed to study the planetary conditions on the planet Theta. They draw lots, and physicist Dr. Allen Leighton is chosen to undergo radical surgical procedures that will transform him into an inhabitant from the planet Theta. Leighton#39;s death is faked, and the bizarre series of transplants and modifications to his body proceed. His wife, Yvette, persists in not believing he is dead; she even feels sympathetic pain as Allen suffers on the operating table. Complications arise when the effects of Leighton#39;s transformation extend beyond his physical appearance and begin to affect his mind, a situation compounded by the scientist#39;s strong emotional connection with his now-pregnant wife./ppbr/ppThe scientists#39; plan is for Dr. Leighton, as the Thetan creature equipped with an energy weapon and spaceship, to land at the United Nations in an effort to create initial panic. This panic, in theory, will be resolved as the world unites to fight the invader. Leighton, now a perfect simulation of an inhabitant of the planet Theta, is launched into orbit as a weather satellite, but the mission goes awry when the spaceship comes down off course and lands in a wooded area near the United Labs facility. After disintegrating their station wagon with his laser pistol, Allen is severely wounded by three armed hunters as he emerges from the underbrush. With nowhere else to go, Allen stumbles back to the lab. Yvette, sensing trouble, hurries to the lab looking for her husband. She arrives as Allen, now hideously transformed, enters and collapses to the floor.
