pOn October 1, 1989, forty-three women give birth to forty-three children, despite none of them showing any sign of pregnancy until labor began. Seven of those children were adopted by eccentric billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves, and turned into a superhero team known as #34;The Umbrella Academy#34;. In the present, five of these children, now grown-up, live separate lives. Luther #34;Number 1#34; lives on the moon, Diego #34;Number 2#34; stops a home invasion, Allison #34;Number 3#34; walks on the red carpet at a film premiere, Klaus #34;Number 4#34; leaves rehab and immediately begins to use drugs, and Vanya #34;Number 7#34; plays the violin. After watching the news, they all learn about Sir Reginald Hargreeves#39;s death./ppbr/ppThe children decide to reunite in their old home, the academy, to talk about their father#39;s death. Visiting his father#39;s bedroom, Luther begins to suspect that his father was murdered by one of the others, as his monocle is missing. Diego reassures Luther that the coroner stated that Sir Reginald died of heart failure but Luther remains suspicious. In a flashback to the Umbrella Academy#39;s first public appearance, the academy successfully stop a bank robbery. Sir Reginald and Vanya watch the action from a rooftop, and Vanya asks why she can#39;t help. Sir Reginald tells Vanya that she just isn#39;t special, and later in an interview, he tells the public that he adopted six children, instead of seven./ppbr/ppBack in the present, a lightning storm causes the group to go outside. Once there, they watch as a young Five #34;Number 5#34;, one of the siblings, arrives at the academy through a strange ball of blue energy. Five explains that he traveled to the future, came back, and became stuck in his 13-year-old body, though he#39;s actually a 58-year-old man. Later, the group holds a funeral for Sir Reginald. In a flashback, Sir Reginald trains and monitors all the children. He also gives all of them a tattoo of an umbrella on their wrists, except Vanya, who draws her own umbrella tattoo using a pen. In the present, the group part ways./ppbr/ppFive visits a coffee shop, where he kills several men who try to kidnap him. At a river, Diego is revealed to have taken Sir Reginald#39;s monocle, which he dumps in a river. Klaus, who has the ability to talk to dead people, begins to talk with his dead sibling, Ben #34;Number 6#34;. However, despite his body being restored to adolescence, with his middle-age experience he now sees Mary Ellen as just a child. He spots Teresa Golowitz, a plain girl Mary Ellen invited to make herself look better. The Devil reminds Bluestone that Golowitz committed suicide that night and reveals that the reason was depression over her social isolation./ppbr/ppDetermined to prevent this, Bluestone tries talking to Teresa, but the other guests pull him away and get him to play #34;How About You?#34; on piano. Teresa spontaneously sings along, amazing the guests with her vocal talent. She shuns their praises and leaves the party. Bluestone follows and tries to convince her that her singing talent is of star quality and is her key to fitting in. In an effort to ensure her suicide attempt is averted, he asks her to promise to meet with him tomorrow to talk about her singing prospects, but she will not commit to it. He helps Mary Ellen fend off an unwanted paramour and gives her a friendly farewell. Right before he leaves, Teresa tipsily tells him she is getting a ride home with another girl from the party, thus avoiding her previous fate of stepping in front of a bus./ppbr/ppBluestone returns to the present and discovers that Teresa has become an award-winning singer, with Bluestone composing for her. The authorities in Heaven are upset about their altering the past, so he has to lie low for a while in Hell.
