In 1994, 26-year-old Phil Gaul disappeared in Dayton, Ohio.

His last known movements reportedly took him toward Asylum — a popular goth and alternative nightclub in downtown Dayton.

Then the story became much stranger.

Years later, retired Dayton Police Lieutenant David Williams publicly discussed allegations that Gaul had been killed during an occult ritual connected to the club. One account claimed he had been beheaded, his head sold as an occult relic, and his body disposed of through Dayton's underground storm-sewer system.

Police reportedly searched the tunnels.

They did not find Gaul.

And they did not find evidence proving the alleged ritual murder.

But the story didn't disappear.

Dayton developed a reputation for having an unusually active vampire subculture, and eventually the mystery became part of a planned documentary called Vampires of Gem City.

Netflix was reportedly going to release it.

Then the documentary was shelved.

It never aired.
