  • Interview: Luke Genders (Guitar) of Defects - Talking Horror
UK metallers Defects have announced their October - November UK ‘The Bloodline’ Tour. The support will come from Profiler and Knife Bride. Tickets are available from here: https://www.wearedefects.com/
The tour will begin on 19 October in Glasgow (Garage Attic) and call through Newcastle (The Cluny), Manchester (Rebellion), Leeds (Key Club), London (O2 Islington Academy 2), Bristol (Exchange). Oxford (Jericho Tavern) and finishes on 7 November in Birmingham (Flapper).
Defects released their debut album, ‘Modern Error’, in May and have spent the summer with blistering sets on the festival circuit, playing at Download (UK) and Graspop (Belgium) as well as tours with Of Mice and Men and Orbit Culture this year. They have also played with the likes of Bullet for My Valentine, Funeral for a Friend and In Flames.
You don’t have to always relate to an album’s theme or concept to feel what the band is trying to say. Sometimes, the experience shared is so powerful, that it hits hard regardless of a personal connection.
There might be no better example of this in the modern times than Defects’ long-awaited debut album, Modern Error. A 13-track showcase (including an intro and interlude) of what this band is capable of. Which just so happens to be passionately delivered metal that blends elements of melodic metal, heavy alternative rock, metalcore, groove metal, and more. Where every track has some form of anthemic value regardless of the level of heaviness that comes with it.

Comprised of members from renowned hardcore bands Romeo Must Die, Dishonour the Crown, and Above All, Fates Messenger have spent the last twelve months showing the world just who they are and what they offer the metal scene. Which just so happens to be a whole lot of exciting and intense genre-bending noise.
Fates Messenger aren’t about reliving past glories, and the music they have put out so far proves that. Scars, Carved in Stone, Bonechapel, and most recently, They Walk Among Us, which comes with a video shot by acclaimed filmmaker and director, Shaun Hodson of Loki Films.

  • Interview: Juha Raivio (Guitar/Backing Vocals/Keys) of Swallow the Sun
Finnish melancholic death and doom masters, Swallow the Sun will release their brand-new album, ‘Shining’ on October 18th, 2024, via Century Media Records. An album that explores the intrinsic challenges of being human.
Which, unsurprisingly, gives Shining a certain level of intangibility as the subjects and themes are so broad. Yet, also unsurprisingly, this examination of being human comes in the form of deep, rich, epic, and infectious melancholy. There is beauty in the darkness, and Swallow the Sun are masters of making it shine.
You can read our full review of the new album here: https://www.gbhbl.com/album-review-swallow-the-sun-shining-century-media-records/
We spoke to mastermind Juha Raivio (Guitar / Backing Vocals / Keys) about his new album, delving into the experience of making it and the toll it took on both him and the band. We delve into extremely personal feelings and thoughts about this album, with Juha proving to be unflinchingly honest as usual. All while showcasing his inimitable dark humour when talking about the melancholic aspect of the band, and how this record has a brightness unlike anything in recent times from Swallow the Sun. It is a fascinating, and very entertaining interview, with so much more covered throughout the talk.

  • Interview: Rob Hemmingway (Guitar/Clean Vocals) of Veiled
Melodic deathcore band, Veiled have spent the past few years building up a formidable name for themselves with impressive releases and live shows that need to be experienced to believe. Now, on October 18th, they unleash their debut full-length album, ‘SE/CT’.
SE/CT is the sound of a band pushing their creative abilities to the limits and still finding new reserves to draw from. A punishingly heavy listen, but with thick layers of dynamic melody and ‘core’ intensity that adds a thrilling layer of catchiness to things. With SE/CT Veiled have crafted an album that emphatically states who they are and what they are capable of.

Taking a deep dive into Veiled, this album, the work that has gone into making it a reality, dealing with negativity and odd comparisons to Sleep Token, the Download experience from the view of a band playing the festival, hopeful plans and goals for next year, and so much more.

  • Interview: Damian Bennett & Andy Swan of Khost
Released on September 20th, 2024, via Cold Spring Records, ‘Many Things Afflict Us Few Things Console Us’ is the 5th album from Birmingham-based industrial/doom metal band Khost. An album that sees the band entering new nightmarish territories, alongside their signature walls of detuned guitar, corroded percussion and VHS atmospherics.
With inspiration for many of the tracks coming from countless live shows and even soundcheck experiments, it’s safe to say that this is Khost at their most creative. Showcasing extreme evolved electronics blended with punk and industrial tempos.
The album features several collaborations too, including Axebreaker (aka Terence Hannum of Locrian), acclaimed cellist Jo Quail, and Berlin-based sound designer Manuel Liebeskind.
We spoke to Damian & Andy of Khost about the new album and dive into their sonic experimentation on this record. Reflecting on the positives and the negatives of the creative period, what drove them to try new things, and how comfortable they creating discomforting music. We also speak about connecting to different crowds, wanting to showcase their music, and this particular album, off in a live environment, and so much more.

  • Interview: Andy Gillion (Multi-Instrumentalist)
‘Exilium’ is the 3rd solo album from Andy Gillion (ex-song-writer/lead guitarist for Finnish melodeath band, Mors Principium Est – 2011-2020). Featuring guest appearances from Brittney Slayes of Unleash the Archers with drums performed throughout by Dave Haley of Psycroptic. ‘Exilium is a concept album, telling the story of an exiled knight.
An album that we described as follows:
Andy Gillion has outdone himself here, if you can believe that. Taking everything that he has learned to this point, and finding fresh ways to express himself. All via the medium of melodic death metal crossed with progressive aspects and utilising big symphonic sounds. You might be familiar with all the elements, but nothing can quite prepare you for the bombastic nature of this record.

  • Interview: Nina Saeidi (Vocals) of Lowen
London based Middle Eastern progressive doom band Lowen have released their sophomore album, ‘Do Not Go to War with The Demons of Mazandaran’ via Church Road Records.
One of the many fables of the Shahnameh, the Persian book of Kings, concerns the folly of rulers who jealously extend their empires despite the warnings of their own people. It is during this tale that he is warned not to go to war with the demons of Mazandaran. This chapter of the book forms the concept of the album.
Helmed by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Nina Saeidi, who was born into exile from Iran in the UK as there, playing metal is illegal and women singing unaccompanied risk execution. This cruel oppression has served to inspire Lowen to create glorious intense progressive doom. Mixing fantastical stories with deep dives into history and shining a light on important modern issues across six epic listens.
The epitome of focus, Lowen have packed out each track with an implausible amount of instrumental detail and ensured that Nina Saeidi’s immense range is always in play and on show. It is an unforgettable experience.

  • Interview: Elisabeth (Vocals) of Erzsébet
Playing symphonic black metal, but amalgamated with a theatrical nuance, Erzsébet’s path began in 2020. Forging an identity that would lead to their first EP, ‘The Blasphemous Lady’ and basing it around the history and myth of Countess Elizabeth Báthory. Aiming to showcase themselves as a band that combines dark, symphonic, aggressive and horrendous elements that transport listeners to a dimension in which horror coexists with beauty.
Following live shows, supporting slots, and playing at festivals, Erzsébet locked themselves back in the studio and set about shaping their debut full-length album, ‘Six Hundred & Fifty’. A concept album that focuses on the darkest era of the noble aristocrat, being blamed for six hundred and fifty deaths and being condemned for it.
‘Six Hundred & Fifty’ was released in June 2024 via Whispering Voice Records.
We spoke to Erzsébet about the album and delve into the concept of the band alongside that. Exploring the nuances to their sound and style, how they aim to transform their live show to match their ambition. We also speak about Erzsébet’s theatrical side, what she enjoys about embodying a character, and so much more.
