A poem by Henry Noel (Elizabethan Courtier)Gaze not on Swans
Gaze not on swans in whose soft breast
A full hatcht beauty seems to nest,
Nor snow which falling from the sky,
Hovers in its virginity.
Gaze not on roses though new blown
Grac’d with a fresh complexion,
Nor lilly which no subtle bee
Hath rob'd by kissing chemistry.
Gaze not on that pure milky way
Where night vies splendour with the day,
Nor pearls whose silver walls confine
The riches of an Indian mine.
For if my emperesse appears
Swans moultring dy, snow melts to tears,
Roses do blush and hang their heads,
Pale lillyes shrink into their beds;
The milky way rides past to shrowd
Its baffled glory in a clowd,
And pearls do climb into her eare,
To hang themselves for envy there.
So have I seene stars big with light,
Proud lanthorns to the moone-ey’d night,
Which when Sol's rays were once display'd,
Sunk in their sockets and decay'd.
Henry Noel
(courtier to Queen Elizabeth 1)

Hello, I was unable to add to this episode, sadly, so in despair I’ll publish it as a mini-episode, like a tapas plate.
Love Gretel 🦔🤗🙋♀️

Your daily dose of calm. Unpolished and unscripted but no ads and no requests for anything but your company. Trying to make the world a gentler place with literature, history and nature. Please don’t expect to find a polished product. The output is lower tier but the authenticity is hopefully as good as it gets. 🦔

Hello dear friends and welcome to newcomers. There are two episodes today: this first continues John Butler’s brilliant investigation into the mystery of Becket’s bones; the second episode this evening will also continue this theme, but we will also include our other familiar readings.

Good evening, sorry a super-late episode today. After dedicating a whole episode to the delightful P Mould yesterday, I wanted to catch up on all our readings. I know we’ve taken on a lot, but it means there is hopefully something there for you. It’s all jolly ad hoc but I can’t think of anything worse than a fixed recording routine.
Thank you to my lovely new subscriber Alison. It means the WORLD to me. So kind. 🙋♀️🌷
Rest well and see you tomorrow x
