We each need a certain amount of money to survive, thrive, prepare for the future (retirement!), and enjoy life without constant financial anxiety.
And, artists and creative people are misfits for Capitalism, because our work often isn't focused on being productive and easily consumable, or perceived as useful: it's sometimes slow and mysterious, and designed to feed hearts as much as bellies. This is also why I love it.
