Grumpy Dungeon Masters

This week the guys were fortunate enough to sit and chat with none other than Luke Gygax. For anybody who doesn’t already know this, he is the son of Gary Gygax and the creator of Gary Con along with a number of other things. The GDM guys get to ask all of the important questions that every fan of D&D ever wanted the answers to…such as how much does he lift and how he keeps his beard immaculate. As he has been a part of the gaming community nearly as long as it’s been a thing he’s got a number of stories to tell and the Grumpy Dungeon Masters were all ears (and occasional mouth).

His most recent Kickstarter just wrapped up on Okkorim: Fate of Chentoufi, but you may still be able to get in on it when the backer kit drops. Nothing new in the tabletop gaming news this week for once so the guys spends some time chatting about some general nonsense and GDM Christopher tells an incredible story of breaking and entering that went terribly wrong….or exactly as expected.

GDM Jay found some more toys that are D&D related that he really wants. At this point he should probably put together a gofundme so people can buy him things. He also takes a shot at Arby’s for releasing gaming related materials and selling out before he has a chance to buy.

Also, what is the best warlock spell? It will come as no surprise what the guys think, but apparently somebody else thinks differently. Also, the answer is Eldritch Blast.

This past week was the D&D Creators Summit, where WotC invited a bunch of creators to come look at their new Virtual Table Top (VTT) and boy was it a doozy. Needless to say it didn’t go as planned. While they did show off the new VTT and it looked pretty good the Q&A turned into the guests ripping into them for their awful business practices and actually asking the hard questions. Naturally the Grumpy Dungeon Masters have their own take on things.

The Dungeons and Dragons movie is finally out and the guys have finally seen it. They wait until the last half of the podcast to talk about it, thus avoiding spoilers for those who aren’t as lucky. They then spend the last half of the podcast gushing about how good it was. Seriously though, it was pretty good, so go see it.

GDM Jay finally gets to talk about the Oriental Adventures Rokugan game he’s going to be running and the amount of research and reading he’s having to do. Seems like a second job to him. Wanting detailed back stories from everybody is something new even to him and it’s really got him and his players jazzed.

They also talk a good bit about the Forgotten Realms and Ed Greenwood’s new Youtube channel. Ed’s been around the business for a very long time and is the creator of the Forgotten Realms, so nobody knows more about the lore than him. Certainly worth your time to check it out.

GDM Christopher is a bit under the weather, so naturally he decides to talk more than normal. Must be how giants deal with being sick. He did himself a bit of merchandise shopping since the D&D movie comes out next week. Find out what goodies he managed to pick up along the way.

Speaking of the D&D movie, the reviews are starting to come in and it’s looking good so far. It’s got the guys kinda hyped for the film.

So who wins in a fight between an F-35 Jet Airplane and a Red Dragon? The guys take a stab at figuring out who actually wins this duel. Fire breath vs rockets, but what it magic comes into play? It’s the dumbest argument on the internet you don’t want to miss.

Natural disasters are a part of life. When you add magic into the mix the term “natural disaster” takes on a slightly different meaning. The Grumpy Dungeon Masters take a stab at what constitutes a natural disaster and how to even try and utilize something like that in your game. Oh, and of course Tsunaming the Underdark gets mentioned again.

GDM Jay is enamored with some of the new books that he’s obtained recently and dives into the Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader game some. On top of an incredible setting of grim dark sci-fi in the far future the game itself appears to be quite solid with good rules. Hopefully someday he gets to actually run it.

In similar news GDM Christopher gets ahold of Ed Greenwoods book Thay: Land of the Red Wizards and also The Legend of Drizzt Visual Dictionary and can’t believe how amazing the books are. Both completely stuffed with lore that GDM Christopher wouldn’t have known and can now use against his players.

New video for the D&D movie Honor Among Thieves has dropped and it’s straight fire. Several minutes of running through a magical maze along with the original characters from the D&D cartoon have got the GDM guys abuzz. GDM Christopher has changed his tune and is really hyped for the movie again. Just a few more weeks to go.
GDM Jay stumbled into a huge collection of table top games and has a quandary of what system to run next. Should it be Werewolf The Apocalypse, Dune, Call of Cthulhu, Rogue Trader, or Legend of the 5 Rings? The one thing we can say for sure is that GDM Jay probably won’t choose just one.

GDM Christopher decided to go hunting the new Honor Among Thieves toys along with his daughter. Needless to say adventures were had and some toys were obtained.

Paizo decided to release a statement about the use of AI generated text and art in their products and GDM Christopher is unsure of how to take the statement. GDM Jay helps to try and make some sense of it and also take some shots at WotC.
GDM Jay also had the opportunity to finally play the Dark Souls table top game and gives a full run down of how it works and how many times he died. Not surprisingly the number is greater than 0. GDM Christopher has a hot take on how the game should be played.

The guys also talk about a heist adventure from the Keys from the Golden Vault and how the best laid plans can quickly go awry. Also discussions on if familiars are under utilized by players and WotC and some Diablo 4 talk.
