Grumpy Dungeon Masters

So we invited our good buddy and Grumpy Dungeon Master in arms Bruce Burkart to join in and talk gaming this week. GDM Jay finally got a look at some of the 5E Dragonlance stuff and lets his opinion be known, specifically about the Kender and Lunar Sorcerors. The outcome isn’t surprising in the least and it’s a Grumpy good time.

GDM Christopher decided to purchase himself as an early Christmas present a cat size Tiamat miniature. When I say cat sized I don’t mean miniature cat sized. I mean actual cat sized. What do you do with a miniature that large? You let it kill some characters!

So with Bruce being on the podcast and the guys hating on WotC so much lately it was inevitable that Bruce would try to convert the guys to Pathfinder. GDM Jay has a book on the way to peruse, but GDM Christopher is a tougher nut to crack. Does the system really matter, is Pathfinder better than D&D 5E, or should we all just be playing Mazes and Monsters? Listen in to find out!

The boys have a nice long chat this week about the Cleric Unearthed Arcana that’s being used for the playtest for 6th edition. Some of it’s good, some of it’s bad, some of it’s pointless, and some of it just makes GDM Christopher grumpier.

GDM Christopher points out to GDM Jay a Baldur’s Gate 3 Collectors Edition that is being released when the game releases next year. Needless to say the guys have some fun taking this thing apart and seeing if it’s actually worth the hefty price tag.

There is also a fun tale about a Black Dragon, monks abilities, and what you get when you purchase a set of Grumpy Dungeon Master dice. This along with a tale about invisible assassins and those who love them makes for another entertaining podcast. Enjoy!

Back at it again. This weeks topic is the latest Unearthed Arcana that both Grumpy Dungeon Masters definitely knew about, read, and watched all related videos about. Yep, those guys sure are on the ball.

More specifically it’s about the updates to three different races in the UA. The Ardling, the Dragonborn, and the Goliath. If you have ever wanted to play as a part dinosaur character this is your chance and we’re not talking about the Dragonborn.

Another week full of shenanigans for the Grumpy Dungeon Masters. Both DM’s had the week off from D&D because of the turkey stuffing holiday, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have anything to complain about. The guys decided to talk about a setting neither of them know anything about. Eberron.

For some of you Eberron might be the life and blood of your campaign, but for these two old men they have never played it, run it, or read it. Naturally this means they know everything about the setting and are experts. Listen in while they regale you with their ignorance.

So with Dragonlance for 5th edition being just on the horizon information has started to leak and the GDM guys can’t help themselves from taking a look at it. At the moment though they are uncertain if there any dragons or lances to be had. There is a knock down drag out fight over Takhisis not being Tiamat, or is that Tiamat not being Takhisis?

GDM Christopher had an interesting encounter with his Spelljammer game involving some bandits and a soon stolen ship. GDM Jay decided to take another dive into Advanced 5E and found a few fun things floating around in there. Lastly discussion on Ravenloft and Godzilla. Hmm…Ravenzilla.

The GDM guys are all over the place this week with the latest podcast. The guys dive into some tips on how to find your zen place when you decided to work on ideas for your latest game. GDM Jay and GDM Christopher both have some good ideas on it. Me personally, I like to chase after a greased up pig. Helps me think

GDM Christopher has a wonderful new selection of miniatures he’s after and even GDM Jay wants some of them. Something about the first edition monsters to get the old man interested. GDM Jay also goes down another rabbit hole trying to learn about the history of modern fantasy and even finds a few weird TSR novels along the way.

Have you ever had a stupid magic item that doesn’t really make sense? Well the Grumpy Dungeon Masters sure have. The guys have a conversation about a couple of the magic items that have been a part of Dungeons and Dragons for decades, but don’t really work well under the rules of D&D 5E. So the Grumpy Dungeon Masters managed to find an interesting case of a dungeon master changing the rules without telling the players. While this is like beating a dead horse this one actually had some interesting rule discussions and taught our DM’s a fairly unknown rule. The guys also dive into whether or not the change to 6th edition will harm the non-WotC 5E games being released soon. Some DM’s always want the latest toys while others will run white box til the day they die.

So when it comes to settings how bleak is too bleak? The world ending isn’t always a quick affair. Sometimes it is a slow burn that takes centuries. The guys look into the topic of settings where mankind is dying and whether it could be a good setting to tackle in a game. GDM Jay also regales us with a tale of his players making a mess of things and GDM Christopher talks about his wife’s first time DMing. Apparently she takes after him.

GDM Jay has returned from his week long vacation, but there is little D&D news despite it. The Guys had their work cut out for them coming up with topics and they came out like a couple of champs. GDM Christopher has decided to take the Waterdeep campaign and make a lot of adjustments for his next campaign to the point that it’s a homebrew. GDM Jay is happy of that fact that he is finally getting out from under the pre-written modules and doing his own thing.

GDM Jay also has a bone to pick with the Warlock class and their patrons, specifically the hexblade. Why do all hexblades have to work with some unnamed Shadow Lord? Why not a hexblade that made a bargain with little Timmy the Tiefling down the street? I’d say give Timmy a chance. You might be surprised!
