Grumpy Dungeon Masters

Hey guys. GDM Jay here. Had to send Cr’aig back to the dungeon for being naughty. Maybe he’ll see sunlight in a couple of weeks. I’ll handle things here until then. On this weeks episode we get to go over the new Unearthed Arcana that WotC released about the multiverse. It’s got a bit of everything in it for everybody. Races, sub-classes, feats, and new spells. We didn’t cover everything, but the important stuff was mentioned. Mostly how you can now play Gambit from the X-men.

GDM Christopher talks about his time at GalaxyCon in Raleigh and how to actually calculate the Magic Missle spell. Needless to say it’s not really complicated. Also GDM Jay tells a tale of phiting a phoenix and how plans quickly go awry. Also why are health potions red and mana potions blue and the uses for syrup.

Cr’aig here. The guys sure are happy this week. They finally got a trailer for the new Dungeons and Dragons movie and they didn’t immediately hate it. As we know the guys can be grumpy and it’s certainly possible they have words for the film after it releases, but for now I’ll take the good news. The trailer however did get some online buzz for the negative and the GDM guys take these naysayers to task over it. Tieflings, Dragons, and Owlbears, Oh My!

GDM Christopher also gets to tell a story about being told he can’t play a certain type of character. The guys get into a good discussion about what parameters a DM should set when it comes to allowing characters to be played in their campaigns. They also take on the tough road of players who like to play broken characters. Anybody who has dungeon mastered for long enough will encounter the level 5 character with 24 AC or the level 10 character doing 120 damage every round of combat. Always remember, it’s Role play, not Roll play.

Hey guys. Cr’aig here. I’ve been doing such a good job lately the Grumpy Dungeon Masters decided to let me out of the dungeon and allow me to do the write up for the episode again. And away we go! This week GDM Jay got ahold of another book by Jeff Ashworth. The Book of Traps, Puzzles, and Dungeons. He quickly put it to work with some devious traps that I am personally trying to avoid becoming a part of. He drops the details of a couple of them and how things went during his game.

The Guys also find an amazing website that even GDM Jay is considering using during his games. It must be good if that old man is thinking about using the internets. https://www.5thdnd.com/ for those that are interested. GDM Christopher decides to chat some about Spelljammer ships and using them as a base. The guys have a lot of thoughts on bases in D&D. It was a busy week for GDM Christopher. He managed to pull together and run a rather successful D&D tournament. With a number of teams competing for top prize several DM’s showed up and ran some great games. This episode is all about the tournament, how it came together, and how things would be changed going forward. GDM Jay managed to find an article in an old Dragon magazine relating to tournament D&D and goes through it with GDM Christopher a day late as usual. Also it wouldn’t be a Grumpy Dungeon Master podcast if somebody didn’t complain about something. GDM Jay takes on falling damage again, quite literally this time.

You know what they say? No news is good news. Unfortunately there isn’t much news at the moment in the Dungeons and Dragons world, so the guys have to just wing it. It’s what they do best anyways. The guys have a fun discussion about famous bridges in Faerun (Forgotten Realms). Lets just say, there aren’t many and even less lore about the ones that are know. Guess that leaves opportunities for DM’s to get creative. They also have discussions about 4th Edition Orcus being more awesome than 5th Edition Orcus, D&D pinball, and Jay finds another awesome list. This time it’s 100 names for books that your players can find when looting shelves. No more having to come up with really bad names or no names at all!

Apparently Free RPG day was this past weekend and GDM Jay was unaware of it. Fortunately GDM Christopher keeps close tabs on all the free things he can get. This includes free magic cards, free RPG’s, free sundaes, and free Chipotle. If you want to know what’s free just ask him. The guys talk about everything that GDM Christopher was able to snag during the free RPG day. Some of it’s simple, some of it’s mysterious, and all of it is things you want. The guys also talk about the upcoming event GDM Christopher is hosting in his hometown of Charleston SC. If you’ve ever wanted to take on the challenge of competitive dice rolling it’s the event for you. GDM Jay also chimes in with his dislike of counterspell and takes us on a historical ride through D&D and how counterspell has worked through the years.

Not all Warforged may be right for you. Ask your DM if you are interested in the Warforged or have any side effects from playing them, such as a case of the Bleeps, the Sweeps, or the Creeps. Have you ever had an encounter that you thought would be incredibly dangerous for the players and in the end it’s trivial? GDM Christopher tells a story of how this happened to him with the new adventure he’s currently working on. As usual for a Dungeon Master things don’t go as planned. The guys also find another stupid rule to harp about and GDM Jay challenges people to fist fight a baboon. For the record, don’t do that. GDM talks about the latest one shot he got to play in and his character Brapp Zanigan. It’s as bad as it sounds. Also WotC needs to release more material. All this and more!
