There are work dogs, and then there are companion dogs.  That's a polite way of saying they're not particularly useful.  A miniature poodle, for example, isn't going to be pulling a sled or detecting bombs.  That's why you need to be ready to defend them in case of coyote attack.  Anything bigger than that, though, and all bets are off.  As a species, humans are the apex predator, but individually not so much.
