GUEST MIX SERIES

We first had the pleasure of sharing an evening listening to S3A at the Hallo Montag closing party back in 2018... and to be honest, he stole the show. We've since enjoyed premiering a host of his tracks, and that signature sampled house sound.

Although he discovered electronic music in 92 through UK hardcore with DJ as Tanith or Producer, his culture is based on a solid knowledge of house music, soul, funk, hip hop, making him one of the most promising house artists of the French scene since 2009.

He first came to Paris with Zadig to realize his childhood dream: building a studio and later collaboration, Frendship Connection (All is just a matter of time has actually been playlisted by Marcel Dettmann).

His residency at Concrete helped him to confirm his DJ position since the last 4 years adding as well releases on Lazare Hoche Records, Hold Youth, Concrete Music, Local Talk, Phonogramme and Faces. With these releases, his remix for Laurent Garnier on Music Large and his booking request from the French legend to play with him for his residency at Rex club and Concrete, gave him legitimacy and visibility in all over Europe.

We're going from strength to strength with the mix series this year, and this week is no different. The word legend is often bandied about, recklessly and with scant regard for its true meaning... but I shit you not, in the hot seat this week we have a bonafide L.E.G.E.N.D in the form of Jovonn.

A native of Brooklyn and current resident of Queens (New York), Jovonn has been active in the music scene since the age of 10. Supported by his mother, a keyboard player; and father, a guitar/bass player, who were aspiring R&B singers; he was nurtured with a solid musical foundation. Jovonn began his career as a Hip-Hop DJ at the age of 14 and started spinning records at those infamous New York block parties of the 80s where he was introduced to the growing New York House music scene, hanging out in seminal Brooklyn clubs such as Sapphires, Club Saturn and Club Serene. Years later clubs such as The Loft, The Choice, Snobbusters and Zanzibar, solidified his full commitment to House music.

Exploding onto the house scene in 1991 with his second release, “Turn and Runaway” on Warner Bros. Records, (which reached number 10 on the Billboard chart and catapulted Jovonn on to the global scene)

He then went on to set up his first record label, Goldtone Records, in the early 1990’s via Emotive Records, and since then has produced more than 500 records in the House, R&B, Hip-Hop and Neo Soul genres, not to mention film scores and soundtracks although his true love has always been House music.

And it's that love of house which shines through here. Welcome to the weekend everyone.

Brooklyn-based producer, DJ, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and label-owner... and good pal. JKriv has been on our radar for a number of years, if not decades. Whether it be for strutting with the bass as part of his band, Escort. Or unearthing gems on the label Deep n Disco... and more recently on his imprint Razor n Tape, Jason has an ear for a groove. It was only a matter of time then before we collared him, and got him to serve up a slice...

Keep your eyes and ears peeled for the 50th release on RnT later this month. It takes the form of a VA compilation, of which J contributes with the track 'Lovin Lasers' which you'll find in this mix.

Helping us to keep our sanity for a little while longer this week is the Berlin based veteran @ianpooley. His perfect blend of classic and contemporary sounds in his DJ sets and productions have made him one of our favourite artists over the years. Pooley’s house tracks invariably endorse a deep, rhythmic sound while exuding warmth and authenticity. His career has spanned a good couple of decades now and he's released some stellar records on his own Pooled Music but also with Innervisions, Ovum and Tsuba to name just a handful. His latest 'Good Things' EP on Cassy’s Kwench records is yet another jam from his extensive discography.

We are extremely happy to welcome him into the SB guest mix series so get stuck in, turn it up and forget about your troubles for a while.

Up this week is a good friend of SB; a label and man that has hooked us up with many a tasty premiere and a fellow lover of that dusty lo-slung house sound. Moment Cinetique are a Deep/House/Disco record label hailing from Sheffield, who will soon be celebrating their second birthday. Over the last two years they have put out tracks by a close group of emerging producers such as Intr0Beatz, Kolja Gerstenberg, Cleanfield, Reece Johnson and established names including Cody Currie, Tilman and Felipe Gordon, with these releases featuring in sets, mixes and charts by DJs like Detroit Swindle, Luke Solomon, Fouk and many more.

In March they release their fourth vinyl EP from up & coming London based DJ/Producer Last Nubian featuring remixes from Harry Wolfman and Carlo. Then in the new future there is a remix package coming out from Sweet Fruity Brunch and Selva featuring new remixes by Vagabundo Club Social and Kevin Over.

Djing wise owner Dave Platts plays out under the label name with a mixture of dusty house, deep, disco, edits and vodka Red Bull. The mix is a mashup of tracks by label artists from other labels, a couple of unreleased tracks and includes the two remixes from Moment Cinetique's upcoming vinyl release.
