In this podcast, Patrick Imhoff looks ahead to 2026 and he implores Fanatics to make some much-needed changes for the sports card industry to benefit the company, collectors and local card shops. He shares the first of many suggestions in this episode!

Imhoff isn’t done there, though, as he also lists off three rookie cards he’s picking up right now because of three players on the rise! (This is going to be an ongoing series, where he lists off three players he’s growing on and three players he’s liking less than he did before.

I share the list of the top-11 baseball players whose rookie cards have been clicked on the most in the past 30 days from my Best Rookie Cards From Every Topps Baseball Set From Every Year article. Several currently injured players are atop the list, which tells us there are some buy-low opportunities!

Along with Patrick’s picks of who he’s picking up, I share three players (one in baseball, one in basketball and one in football) whose rookie cards I’m considering picking up right now for various reasons!

Finally, I we look at Cards That Make Us Happy, and I go back to the 2007 Topps Series 1 release to find our latest fun gem. Derek Jeter swinging from his heels, with Mickey Mantle behind him in the dugout and U.S. President George W. Bush waving from the stands! It’s a fun card — and a fun history!

Future Pirates ace Paul Skenes joined the big-league club last month, and our resident Pirates fan and card collector Patrick Imhoff compares the hype surrounding Skenes with five pitchers from the past 20 years.

He also helps card collectors and card investors decide on whether they should buy a 1st Bowman Refractor card of Skenes right now or if they should wait.

Not only did Wembanyama win Rookie of the Year, but he won the award unanimously! That has only been done five other times, so I break down that handful of other players that did it, and looked at what their hobby legacy became later on.

Our “Happy Hobby” world went through a little transition over the past few weeks, as we turned on the pay wall with Substack. Anyone involved in this Happy Hobby of ours is a big fan of rookie cards. Who isn’t!?! But we look back in time to talk about how Classic Draft cards, way back in the early ‘90s, changed how we see sports cards.

While many people weren’t fans of seeing players in college or high school uniforms, others were elated to now have another way to collect.

Some, like myself, were bigger college sports fans than pro fans, so getting young University of Miami football players, or Duke University basketball players, was fantastic! I was a huge Syracuse University basketball fan, so I got to pick up cards back in the day of guys like Lawrence Moten and David Johnson, but then I also got cards recently of Jimmy and Buddy Boeheim!

In this podcast, we also dive into the Topps Living set, looking at how the set is constructed, and why Wander Franco’s card makes us so mad!

We also take a look back at some Jackson “Holliday Anxiety,” wondering what his recent promotion/demotion means for collectors.

While one of the main subjects about this podcast is the arrival (and departure) of MLB’s top prospect, Jackson Holliday, to the major leagues, the biggest story in the podcast episode is actually what Happy Hobbyist Scott Hedrick shares.

Scott explains how our sports card hobby has affected his family positively in a major way, and it really is one of the more heartwarming stories I’ve heard about this hobby.

We also discuss the amazingness that is Dave Winfield — one of the greatest athletes in the history of the 20th century!

Patrick Imhoff shares which cards you’ll want to scoop up of Jackson Holliday’s, and now that he bounced back to the minors, you should be able to get them at an even better price!

I also thought it would be fun to rank my five favorite Topps card designs from the last quarter of the last century. What were your favorite card designs?

We discuss the awesomeness that is the 2024 Topps Heritage Baseball card set that was released in April, which has current players on current cards designed to look like the old 1975 Topps design. That look, in my humble opinion, is one of the all-time greatest looks ever!

Also, Patrick Imhoff shares some great “Alternative Collecting Ideas,” which will help make your collection even more fun (if you can imagine that!). He shares a few alternative ways to put together smaller sets that may be more meaningful to you.
