  • This is Now (August 21, 2020)
Hawaii saw an additional COVID-19 fatality on Friday, the sixth this week alone. Meanwhile, 230 new infections were reported statewide.
The new fatality, reported on Oahu, brings the death toll from the virus in Hawaii to 46.
This month alone, 20 people have died from COVID-19 in the islands.
Of the 230 new cases Friday, 209 were on Oahu. The Big Island reported 13, six were on Maui and two were on Kauai. It’s the third straight day that the state’s new COVID-19 case count has exceeded 200.
The continued surge of new infections comes as the state marks two weeks since authorities closed beaches, parks and other gathering places and launched a new police unit to crack down on violators.
Since COVID-19′s incubation period is 14 days, it would appear those restrictions haven’t worked to dramatically bring down case counts, but it’s still too early to say whether new rules that went into effect this week on gatherings and group sizes at attractions will slow the spread of the virus on Oahu.
The new infections bring the total number of cases in Hawaii since the pandemic began to 6,072.

  • This is Now (August 20, 2020)
Two additional COVID-19 fatalities in Hawaii were reported Thursday, pushing the death toll in the islands from the virus to 45.
Nineteen people with COVID-19 have died in Hawaii this month alone.
That’s the same number of people with the virus who died from March 31 to July 3 in Hawaii — a statistic that underscores the grim consequences of Oahu’s continued surge in new infections.
    And the surge continued Thursday.
There were 236 infections reported statewide — 230 of which were on Oahu. There were also five new cases on the Big Island and one on Maui, where a cluster at Maui Memorial has prompted growing concern.
The new infections push the statewide total for COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began to 5,844.
Of those, more than 3,700 are “active” — which means they are potentially infectious. Medical experts, including Lt. Gov. Josh Green, have called for a state shutdown if active cases surpass 3,500.

The state is reporting two additional COVID-19 fatalities on Wednesday, brining the death toll from the virus in the islands to 43.
There were no immediate details on the new fatalities.
And after a dip in new cases in recent days — down to just 134 on Tuesday — the number of new infections shot up Wednesday to 261. Of those 234 are on Oahu, 20 are on Maui, and seven on the Big Island.
Those 261 new infections are out of 2,559 tests conducted, which translates into a 10% positivity rate.
The infections push the total number of cases since the pandemic began to 5,609.
As of Wednesday, there are 3,590 active cases statewide.
The news comes in the wake of the governor’s decision Tuesday to put in place additional restrictions on gatherings on Oahu in lieu of a broad shutdown, which some have been calling for.

  • This is Now (August 18, 2020)
Hawaii is reporting an additional COVID-19 fatality, bringing the death toll from the virus in Hawaii to 41.
Meanwhile, there were 134 new coronavirus cases reported Tuesday. Of the new cases, 124 are on Oahu, seven are on Maui and three are on the Big Island.
Tuesday’s new infections bring the total number of cases in the islands since the pandemic began to 5,349.
The news comes as the governor has pledged to institute “additional targeted restrictions” as the number of new COVID-19 infections on Oahu continues to soar.
Hawaii now has nearly 3,400 active cases — a number authorities had previously identified as unsustainable and a “trigger” for a shutdown.
Tuesday is the 15th straight day that Hawaii has seen new cases in the triple digits, in an alarming situation that has threatened to overwhelm Oahu hospitals.
In recent days, growing clusters have emerged at the state’s largest jail and an Iwilei homeless shelter. There have also been a rising number of cases associated with care homes.
