Episode 161 is an interview with Welsh witch Mhara Starling, whose TikTok has gone viral in recent months for reviving ancient Welsh Paganism for a new generation. I'm particularly excited for this conversation, because, as a trans woman, Mhara's experience navigating the Pagan community - that is often so focused on sex, gender, and fertility - is part of a long history of queer people navigating Pagan spaces in a state of discomfort or having to work to make the heteronormative teachings work for us. We discuss being a trans witch in a community so focused on gender and fertility, carpet witches, and the beauty of bad reviews.

Episode 156 of Inciting A Riot is an interview with "Sarah". Her name has been changed and identity protected in order to discuss her profession: being a phone psychic. Were her identity to be revealed, she would almost certainly lose her job and possibly face legal action. For this reason, I'm not releasing the video version of this episode on Patreon as per usual.

Sarah talked to me about what it's really like working for a psychic hotline, including the interview process, quality control, abusive behavior by both the psychics and clients and pretty much anything else you've ever wanted to know about the realities of these businesses. I found it to be a fascinating discussion and think you will, too.

October 06, 2020 84: Episode 153: Inciting A Decolonizing Reiki Riot

Episode 153 is an interview with Marika Clymer, an Own Voices Japanese-Ainu American reiki practitioner whose efforts to decolonize this traditional Japanese healing modality on social media have garnered her a lot of attention. She pulls no punches in discussing the many ways white practitioners unapologetically take from BIPOC spiritualities and the ways in which many of these practices have been white-washed and sanitized to appeal to white audiences in the United States.

Some topics in the discussion include: The medicalizing of reiki in the 19th century, internalized racism both in and out of BIPOC communities, the idea of becoming a "reiki master" over a weekend, "love and light", performing reiki remotely, honesty and integrity when it comes to discussing your spiritual experiences, and drag queens.
