In today's episode, Tahitia will be talking about her experience being pregnant and giving birth to her first child. She developed preeclampsia and the episode shares her personal experience of encountering bias from a healthcare provider and how it impacted her experience in the moment and influenced her career. Black maternal child health is a crisis health issue in the United States and Olympian Tori Bowie's passing from pregnancy-related complications in early May had Tahitia thinking about how little had changed in the 25 years she gave birth.

Tahitia's Personal Bio

Tahitia identifies as a Black, autistic, queer, cis-gendered woman. She is also an RN and loves learning. She has nearly 20 years of experience working with organizations and individuals, developing, presenting, and consulting on inclusive content.

She is the owner and lead of Conscious By Us, LLC., a Certified Small Business (SBE) and Minority Women Business Enterprise (MWBE) and LGBTQ+ Owned Business Enterprise (LBE) located in New Jersey, which focuses on DEI and raising awareness around health equity through coaching, SME consulting, and speaker events.

Tahitia is a GenXer that grew up in Paterson, New Jersey. She remembers being a latch-key kid, taking care of her younger brother, and shopping at the Salvation Army - not because it was trendy but because of necessity. Her mom identifies as ethnically Jewish, and her father identifies as Black, he spent the majority of his childhood in the New York foster system. When asked why she does not identify as mixed, it is because the world has never seen her as not Black growing up and when they haven't, it's been to try and give her a back-handed compliment. "I am proud of my heritage, but I don't talk about being Jewish as much because I don't really practice Judaism.

Her parents moved to Clifton, New Jersey, when she was in high school She was one of the few Black, openly queer students there. Which was not always great.

She has two amazing children and is a single parent. Life as a single queer parent has also had its ups and downs. But she hopes that in the end she won't be judged by her flaws and failures as a parent but for her love for them and wish that they find their own strong voices.

She was diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome, while pregnant with her son, after her first child was diagnosed with it. The condition affects the body’s connective tissue, including the heart. In 2012, Tahitia underwent an over 12-hour Valve sparing root replacement surgery. She suffered a neurologic event while she was recovering, which most people don't notice unless she points it out.

She was diagnosed with autism later in life, and it was probably the missing piece to figuring out why personal relationships were such a struggle.

That is just a snippet of our host's life story and not even some of the most challenging events our host has experienced.

The 52 Weeks of Health Equity podcast recently interviewed Rosedale Jones, a Spiritual Coach & Lifestyle Transformalist. Rosedale went from having poor health habits, high stress, poor heart health, being overweight, and close to having a health crisis, to becoming the healthy person she is today. She shares her infectious positivity around the importance of transformation through her own lived experiences changing her life.

She discussed the importance of developing the connection between the mind, body, and spirit, the benefits of mindful intention, and the need to set aside time and space for ourselves to create better health and community.

When we talk about health equity, it is easy to forget that spirituality, faith, and our beliefs are important parts of our sense of self and belonging. Community and Social Connections are an important part of the social determinants of health. According to Healthy People 2030, “Positive relationships at home, at work, and in the community can help reduce these negative impacts. Interventions to help people get the social and community support they need are critical for improving health and well-being.”  We believe that sharing stories that touch all areas of influence that impact health access and equity will help us all understand better how we can create the changes we need to be healthy individuals and societies.

In today's episode, we chat with Annya Stoddart, who is based in the United Kingdom, and shares how she was able to avoid the fatigue and burnout that often comes with the role of caregiver.  Annya was the caregiver for her aging mother who developed dementia. She shares how the practice of mediation helped her prepare for that role and learn how to prioritize herself. We discuss how allowing space for self are tools that can help us become healthier versions of ourselves and how meditation can be a powerful tool for creating equity in spaces that feel unbalanced.
