Fearing higher energy prices, voters in Washington state have twice rejected initiatives that would impose limits on fossil fuel use. Ignoring the majority of voters' wishes, Democrats who control the legislature imposed a carbon dioxide cap-and-trade plan contingent on an increase in the gas tax (which would have to be passed by a supermajority). This was part of a grand bargain to get moderate Democrats to sign onto legislation they had previously rejected. Gov. Inslee (D), in a potentially unconstitutional manner, line-item vetoed the tax. The law would limit carbon dioxide emissions and raise energy prices, but it may all be undone by the courts.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis recently signed a bill into law that aims to protect social media users from being censored or de-platformed. Jim Lakely joins the Jeff Katz show to discuss how this law is a step in the right direction for protecting free speech online. Until now, big tech companies have had free rein to censor whomever they choose, with users having little to no recourse to fight back. The Florida law aims to change that.

Heartland’s Tim Benson is joined by Sean McMeekin, professor of history at Bard College, to discuss his new book, Stalin's War: A New History of World War II. They discuss Soviet foreign policy in the 1930’s, how the USSR advanced the war making capabilities of Nazi Germany prior to Operation Barbarossa, and how Stalin got away with invading and occupying seven different countries in the shadow of Hitler’s stunning military triumphs in 1939 and 1940.
