And certain men which came down from Judea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved. hen therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question. What was this argument really about? Is that what this argument really is about: that you must be circumcised to be saved? Many in the traditional Christian church have misunderstood this passage and incorrectly concluded that what the Pharisees in Acts 15 were arguing was this: that one must follow the law (the Torah) in order to be saved. This is not the debate, the argument, or the question on the table.

What is the real question being addressed? The real question is this: What has greater Torah weight: circumcision of the flesh? Or circumcision of the heart? Is there a larger question here? A sect of Pharisaic believers said it is circumcision of the flesh. Paul argued that it is circumcision of the heart.

In this lesson, we compare and contrast the difference between the covenant given at Mt Sinai and the renewed covenant offered to us through Messiah Yeshua. The Ten commandments were written upon stone tablets. At the deeper sod level, this is a shadow picture pointing us to the condition of the hearts of the people. They broke the marriage covenant at Mt Sinai with the golden calf incident because they had stony hearts.

A stony heart is an uncircumcised heart. An uncircumcised heart does not follow the Torah.

In contrast, when a person repents and is born again, the Holy Spirit removes the heart of stone and gives us a “heart of flesh”, or a circumcised heart (Jer. 31:31-33, Ezekiel 36:26-27). A circumcised heart loves Yahweh and seeks to follow His Torah by the Holy spirit:

A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. Ezekiel 36: 26-27

It is possible to be circumcised in the flesh but not in the heart.

In the millennial kingdom, a male must be circumcised in both heart and flesh before he is allowed to enter into the Temple. (Ezekiel 44: 5,9)

An argument is being made concerning salvation. The Pharisees are saying that:

"Unless you are circumcised, according to the practice of Moses, you are unable to be saved." Acts 15:1

Paul and Barnabas were STRONGLY disputing this position and they have a counter argument. They will be going to Jerusalem to get a ruling on this matter from the Apostles and elders who are followers of Yeshua the Messiah.

In order to understand what this controversy is all about, we need a Hebraic context and a Torah perspective. In this session, we will focus on getting a biblical understanding and perspective on what IS circumcision and what does it mean.

We need to broaden our understanding of what this term means. Circumcision is a term that is used to refer to the Jewish people. Uncircumcision is a term used to refer to a non-Jewish person and/or to the nations of the world who are not in covenant relationship with the God of Israel.

Behold, the days come, says the LORD, that I will punish all them which are circumcised with the uncircumcised; Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that are in the utmost corners, that dwell in the wilderness: for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in the heart. Jeremiah 9: 25-26

You can be physically circumcised but uncircumcised in heart. An uncircumcised heart does not obey Yahweh or follow His Torah. An uncircumcised heart is a stony heart.

Here is a summary of what we have learned:

*The House of Jacob came out of Egypt, and consisted of the physical descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as well as the “mixed multitude” who came out with them. These were “strangers” who were grafted in.

*Being outside of the covenant family with Messiah means that you do not belong to the commonwealth of Israel (Eph. 2).

*The same Torah laws apply to both the native born of the House of Jacob AND the stranger who is adopted/grafted in.

*Both the Jew and the non-Jew are to express their faith in Yeshua as Messiah after being saved by grace through faith (Eph 2:8-9), by following and keeping the Torah (Romans 3:31)

*The God of Israel loves the stranger.

*The native born is to love the stranger as himself.

*The stranger is to keep the Sabbath, and the biblical Feasts (Passover, Shavuot, Sukkot).

*The stranger will inherit the promised land together with the physical 12 tribes of Israel when they fully receive their inheritance in the land.

For the LORD is our Judge,

The LORD is our Lawgiver,

The LORD is our King;

He will save us. Isaiah 33:22

We see that the Messiah, Yeshua fulfills all of these roles. Yeshua is our savior, (Matthew 1:21, Luke 2:11). Yeshua is our judge (2 Cor 5:10). Yeshua is the King of Israel (John 1:49, Rev 19:16), and finally, Yeshua is the Lawgiver, the one who gave us the Torah at Mt Sinai

(James 4:12), where it is written:

There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another?”

Yeshua is the one who gave the Torah to His people, the House of Jacob, at Mt Sinai.

Because our forefathers sinned with the golden calf, this marriage covenant was broken. So Yeshua dies on the tree so that anyone who repents and returns to the God of Israel can be restored to the covenant and be brought back into the covenant people, the House of Jacob. (Luke 1:33)
