Speaking from the shaping barn in York, Maine, where they produce hand-crafted wooden boards for their brand Grain Surfboards in York, we dove into the richness of the surfing scene and culture up in Maine and New England, and how their formative years shaped their path. As one of the pioneers of cold water surf, we dove into Nick’s portfolio and the nuances of shooting in the dark cold North Atlantic, as well as touching on their years of quiet line ups, working for Jake Burton at the eponymous Burton Snowboards, and now to their position as custodians of the culture. Our latest episode falls on a special date in our calendar, International Women’s Day. Understanding that Women have been under-represented within the male-dominated surf industry for too long, for the past three years we have sought to elevate female voices with our Women Of The Sea Film Fund, offering up £10,000 for budding women to tell stories of commandeering their space in the lineup. All of which leads us neatly to today’s podcast guests – Lucy Small, a surfer, journalist and activist, and longtime friend of Finisterre, Filmmaker Maddie Meddings – discussing their latest surf film project, “Ceibo”.
